- Be it known-that I, .GEORGEE. KRAEn a citizenof thejIU-nited States, and. a res dent of Wilson, in thecounty of Carter and State of Oklahoma," have invented a new and Imwhich the, followingis a rfull,r, clear,.and
exactdescription. e v This inv'entiongrelates.,tO. 11I1d erreamer dressing blocks and is. more particularly 'designed for the purpose of holdlng a well knownjtype Of underreamer cutter 1n aperfectly upright rigidposition so that the cutter/canbe dressed by, the operator without damage to the original formor alinement ,of'
h cut rv An Object O the invention is to prov de a block of the character stated, comprlslng two members carrying forms which fit the back and front sides of the cutter so that when the members of the block are moved toward each other and clamped the cutter will be securely and properlyheld.
A'further object is to provide a block of this character which can be quickly ad usted to clamping or releasing position, which will be strong and durable in use, and which will most efiiciently perform the functions for which it is intended. I
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings- Fig. 1 is a perspective View of one of the block members;
Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the other block member;
Fig. 3 is a view in vertical section through the center of the device when in operative position, the cutter being illustrated by dot and dash lines;
Fig. 4 is a view in horizontal section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view illustrating the cam lever and its mount.
My improved block comprises two mem slide on the platform and I in I lower 1 7 face with grooves 1 7-; to receive; the
.: The blocks 1,. and ginynlii sap 53 a cent facesare recessed, as shown at 8, the ,walls of these recesses tapering, longitudinally so, that therecesses are widest attheir These, form s,, are, so ishapedithat} when :to-
getherthey form clamping recesses;confo-rmins ncxa t sh p tQ P ItiOnfthe; cutter to be dressed ,-;so thatewhilethey clamp-the :cutter .securely they do not zalter the shape sizes of said cutters, and hence the forms are made removable and are securely held by reasonof their shape, which correspon'dsin shapeto the walls of the recesses or grooves i; whlch they are housed in the block mem upper ends and narrowest at,.ftheir --lower ends.
The block members 1 and 2 are provided I with almed openings 10receiving bolts 11. These bolts 11 are preferably screw-threaded at one end, as shown at 12, and are p'rovided with nuts 13 to permit a'fce rtain amount of adjustment of the bolts longitudinally to insure a proper functioning of the device. v v 1 The openings 10 are enlargedtransversely adjacent the inner faces of the block mem-Z bers to provide housing for coil springs 14 and also to provide shoulders 15 in the respective block 'members'against which the ends Of'the spring bear and tend to press the block members apart.
The bolts 11 at one end are formed with I eyes 16 constituting bearings for an eccentric or crankshaft 17, saidshaft having a handle or crank arm 18 at one endto facilitate the turning of the shaft. The eccentric or cam port-ion 19 of the shaft 17 is formed by oflsetting the-shaft between the bearings 16 so that when the shaft is iven a turn Or partial turn in the proper irection this cam will engage the back of the member 1 and force it toward the member 2 to securelyclampthe cutter. By moving center of the shaft the. parts will be securely held against accidental displacement.
the, manual movement of the block as. a Whole, and these handles are properly shaped so as not to interfere with anyefrtheopen ations 0r movements of parts above explained. p
The operation is as follows: AssL min'g the blocks 9 to be in position m the members 1 and 2 and the member '1 located on the platform 3, the cutter, indicated by dot and dash lines in Fignrefi, is inserted in position and the lever 18 is moved to turn shaft 17 and by reason of "theeam or eccentric 19' forces the member's "toward each other to seen-rely clamp. the cutter. I V-Vhen the cutter is to be released,
the shaft is turned in the opposite direction andjth-e springs 14 will force the members, 1
Various slight changes and alterations parts described WitliontIdepar-ting from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself tothe precise details set forth but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes Handles 2.0 are secured to the member 2 at respectivev sides thereof so asv to facilitate and. alterations as fairly fall Withinthe spirit anjclscope of the appended claims.
I claim; i I if: lpA' block of the character described, comprising two members, each member having tapering recesses in its inner face, re-
movable, forms located in said recesses and having tapering Walls corresponding with the taper thereof, bolts connecting the mom. bers, and means for moving one of said members toward and away from the other member. v e
2. A block of the character ldescribed, born prising twojmembers, each member having tapering'recesses in its inner face, removable forms located in said recesses and hagving tapering Walls corresponding with the taper thereof, bolts connecting the members,
means for moving one of saidmemberst "Ward and away fromtheother meniber; one of said members constituting a support for the other member, and-handles on said sup. porting member. I GEORGE ELMER KRAEER.
