Description

Y Cooking-Ranges and Heaters'. f
No.1`56601 Y I 4 Patented Nov.3,1874.-'
I TNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELlPHALET S. SCRIPTURE, OF WILLIAMSBURG, NEW YORK. l
IMPROVEMENT IN COOKING-RANGS AND HETERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.156,601, datedNovcmber 3, 1874; application filed October 16, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that LELiPHALET SSGRIPTURE, of Williamsburg, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Cookin Range, Hot Air, and Steam Heater, and l do hereby declare th at theiollowin gis a full7 clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention has for its object a method of using fuel with far greater economy than by the present mode of using it for the various purposes of .domestic and mechanical economy, such as for cooking, heating, and power purposes, which is accomplished on the prin-I ciple of lnoving or carrying the fire-furnace directly in proximity with the implement containing the article to be cooked or heated by means of certain devices that will produce both a vertical and horizontal movement, thereby getting the fire in position to precisely comport with the heating-power reside, from which latter the sides of the case rise perpendicularly. 0nM the side` shelves C C rest a railroad-track, D. E is a narrow lid, hinged to one side ofthe case A, near its front end, and E is a lid extending back from it to the back end of the case, upon which latter is secured an upright steam-boiler, G. In front of this boiler, and secured to the lid E', is an oven, H, provided with a door, I. From the lower edge of this door extends inwardly into the oven a shelf or griddleholder,77 c, which follows the door out or in when being opened or closed, therebycarrying the article to be cooked without pushing the same in by the hands, constituting avery great convenience in the process of cooking certain things without burning the fingers. Upon the track D D is placed the reciprocating re car or truck J, moving upon suitable wheels b b, to carry a suitable firepot or furnace back and forth, as may be needed in getting the required position horizontally. The car or truck J is provided with top wings d d, attached thereto and extending each side out over the track for protecting the wheels, Ste. It has also a curved back draft-apron, e, which passes down the back of the truck to near the bottom of the ash-pit. f f are side wings, attached to the car and passing down a suitable distance for the purpose of concentratin g draft. The perpendicular altitude and depression are obtained by means of four eccentrics or cams, 7c k, attached to shafts h h, and working under the track D D, against rollers i i therein, by means of levers L L and connecting-bar 7c, as shown in Fig. 2. The lid E, when turned over, serves to allow fuel to be placed within the fire-car J, and also al1 lows the same to be elevated in order to show an open fire when such may be required, and also to admit of placing upon or removing from the track the re-car, which may be sent back directly under the oven H or the boiler G, as the case may require. If steam is to be dispensed with the boiler may be substituted by any other culinary implement and be constituted a regular stove-range. The oven may be so arranged as to have the ire sent over it, if needs be, while the fire-case A may eX- tend beyond the boiler G far enough to admit of an eXtra smoke-pipe, M, whereby the fire and smoke may be cut oif from the boiler-flues and sent through it by means of the cut-oft' or damper, while still beyond that may be a door, which, when opened, will allow the fire car or cars to pass out when required, in order to be replenished with fuel and again take their place upon' the track in front. The tirecar, furnace, and grate may be so constructed as to suit any kind of fuel that may be chosen.
The use of the hinged lids, when turned over, permits laying down or removing the track, and coating their under sides with such lire-proof cement as may be required from time to time, or making any other internal repairs. By the adjustment of the fire-car the amount of fuel consumed may be materially lessened.
By the use of the broad and spacious firecase there is ample room for a volume of heated air for distribution in Warming purposes when that kind of heat is preferred to steam.
A further important advantage derived from this kind of fire-case, when made of wrought-iron, is that it may he made fire-tight and capable of resisting almost any force that may he brought to bear upon it, and hence can be used on railroads, on ships, 85e.
Two or more lrecars may be placed on the track, it' required, and when their fuel is exhausted they may be passed out by a back door for replenishing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a cooking apparatus, a vertically-adjustable railroad-track, in combination With one or more horizontally-adjustable tire-oars moving thereon, for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The fire-car J, mounted upon Wheels b b, in combination with the flanges ,d e f, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the track D, cams or ecoentrics K K, shafts h h, levers L L, and conneotingrod k, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
4. The case A, having ash-pit B 'and side shelves C C, in combination with lire-ear J having Wheels b b and flanges d e f, track D, and cams K K, all as and'for the purpose set forth.
In testimony Cthat I claim the foregoing as my own I aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
ELIPHALET S. SGRIPTURE.
