Description

sAMUEn B. DAvIs, on HAMBURG, IowA.
IMPROVEMENT IN conn-PLA'NTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 156,545, dated November 3, 1874; application filed September 5, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, S. B. DAVIS, of Hamburg, in the county of Fremont and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Planters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the acoompanyin g drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a corn-planter, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a plan view of my improved corn-planter. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged longitudinal section of the corn-box.
A represents the main frame, secured to the axle B, upon the ends of which are the driving-wheels G C. E is the tongue attached to the frame-A. To short posts a a, on the front of the main frame A, is pivoted a frame, D, in which a shaft, b, has its bearings, said shaft having on each end a pinion, d, which gears with a cog-wheel, Gr, secured on the inner side of the driving-wheel C. On each side of the frame D the shaft b forms a crank, e, upon which is placed a coupling, f, and the front or outer end of the coupling is, by straps or arms h h, connected with the upper end of a corn box or hopper, H. This box is substantially` in the same form as is usual for hand cornplanters, and is also pivoted in a stirrup, 7c, which is pivoted'to a post or arm on the under side of the axle B. The lower end or point i of the box is to be made sharp, so as to cut in any ground, and is provided with a shoe, m, fastened by a set-screw. This shoe presses the hill, also regulates the depth of the corn in the ground, and marks and checks the ground for the next two rows.
H is provided with a vertically-operating seed-dropping slide, I, connected by a rod, a, witha spring-arm, p, projecting from the outer end of the coupling f. The saddle for the driver is made in two parts, J J', the former The box being secured to the main frame, and the part J pivoted to the stationary part J.
By turning the front part J to one side, the frame D with the shaft b and other attachments are raised, when J is turned forward to support the frame, and in this position the pinions d are thrown out of gear with the wheels G, and the boxes H are elevated out of the ground. When the frame D is lowered again, the pinions d are thrown in gear with the cog wheels G. As the machine then moves forward the shaft b revolves, giving vthe corn-boxes H a sort of rotary and reciprocating motion, and at the same time the seedslides I obtain an intermittent reciprocating motion independent of the motion of the boxes, so as to expel the desired quantity of corn each time the points t' have entered the ground.
If desired, more than two corn-boxes may be used. Y
Having thus fully described my invention, what I 'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` l. The combination, in a corn-planter, of a rotary and reciprocating corn-box, and a seeddropping slide operating therein, and having an intermittent reciprocating motion independent of that of the corn-box, substantially as herein set forth.
2. The combination, with the frame A, axle B, and driving-wheels C, of the hinged frame D, with crank -shaft b, carrying the entire corn-dropping apparatus, and the saddle J J all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The combination of the revolving crankshaft b e, coupling f, arms h L, corn-box H, and stirrup k, as and for the purposes set forth.
4. The combination of the revolving crankshaft b e, coupling f, arm p, rod n, and seedslide I, as and for the purposes herein sct forth.
In testimony that I claim lthe foregoing as my own I aflix my signature in presence of 4two witnesses.
SAMUEL B. DAVIS.
