Description
Patented Dec. 8, 1925.
PATENT OFFICE.
DAISY D. NIELSEN, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
HAIR CURLER.
Application filed May 8, 1925.
To all whom it may conoem:
Be it known that I DAISY D. NIELSEN, a citizen of the Unitcd'States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful ln'iprovcmcnts in Hair Curlers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hair curlers. The object of the invention is to provide a hair curling appliance which is adapted to form curls on short or bobbed hair and is an improvement on my prior United States 'Patent No. 1,408,131, grant/ed February Another object ot'this invention is to provide a hair curling appliance having a channel shaped member adapted to overlie a cylindrical member, the cylindrical and channel shaped members having recesses formed on one end and adapted to co-act with a clamphaving a lip engaging the recesses formed in the cylindrical and channel shaped members in order to prevent lateral shifting of the channel shaped member on the cylindrical member.
Another object of the invention is to pro-v vide a hair curling appliance which willbe constructed in such a manner that it will be securely retained in place while forming a curl.
A practical embodiment of the invention is herein disclosed by the following description of the accompanying drawings, the novel features hereof being pointed out in the appended claims in which;
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my hair curling appliance as it appears in the first step of the operation of forming a curl.
Fig. 2 is a view analagous to Fig. 1, showing the second step in the operation of forming a curl.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the final step in the operation of forming a curl.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of thehair curling device.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the haircurling appliance. v I
Fig. 6 is a transverse section taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 7 is an enlarged section taken on line Fig. 8 is an enlarged perspective view of one end of the appliance showing certain details of construction.
. Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings, 10 designates a cylindrical Serial No. 28,904.
member which is formed of sheet metal and is provided with a pair of upstanding cars 11 and a finger grip 12 at one end, the 0pposite end having diametrically opposite re cesses 13 and 14 formed therein for a purpose later referred to.
A channel shaped member 16 is adapted to overlie the cylindrical member 10 and has a pair of ears 17 adapted to fit over the ears 11 of the member 10. A finger grip 18 is formed on one end and a recess 19 of substantially the same shape as the recess 13 in the member 10 is formed on the opposite end.
The ears 17 have openings 20 which are eccentric to the center of the channel portion 16' a A clamp generally designated at 21 has bifurcated ends 22 which are adapted to fit over the cars 17, and extends from a central portion 23 which terminates in a lip 24, the
bifurcated ends 22 having openings 25 formed therein. The tubular member 10,
7 channel shaped member 16, and clamp are pivotally connected together by a pin 26 extending through'the respective openings formed in each of said members'as is clearly shown in Fig. 7. One end of the pin 26 is swedged in (:(rder to prevent removal as indicated at 2 The recesses 13 and 14 in the tubular member 10 and the recess 19 in the channel shaped member 16, are provided for the purpose of receiving the lip 24 of the clamp 21,
which is of spring metal and will snap into place and prevent the channel shaped member from shifting laterally on the cylindrical member.
- As the openings 15 in the tubular member 10 and the openings 20 in the channel shaped member 16 are eccentric as previously referred to, a clearance 28 is formed between the outer wall of the portion 10' and the inner wall of the portion 16, which allows space for the insertion of the hair designated H, and permits the members to evenly. engage it. The members 10 and 16 are normally pressed together by a spring generally deslgnated at 29, which is in the form of a hinge spring having a coil portion 30, through which extends the pin 26 and has projecting ends 31 which engage the inner walls of the finger grips 12 and 18.
no" i When it is desired to use the hair curling appliance and the clamp 21 is swung into the position as shown in Figs. 1. and 2, the members 10 and 16 are opened by exerting a pressure on the finger grips 12 and 18. The ends of a lock of hair are then inserted between the ends of the members 10 and 16 and the members are allowed to close by the action of the spring 29. The hair curling appliance is then rotated which will wrap the hair around the exterior surfaces of the n'iemhers l0 and 16 as shown in Fig. 2. The clamping member 21 is then pressed into the position shown in Fig. 8 and the appliance is then left in this position as long as it is required to form the curl. After the curl is formed the appliance may be easily removed by releasing the clamp and sliding the curl off of the members 10 and 16.
It will be particularly noted that the lip 24 formed on the end of the clamp coacting with the recesses formed in the ends of the cylindrical and channel shaped members will prevent lateral shifting of the channel seaoea shaped member on the cylindrical member and that the clamp will be securely retained in clamping position by the inwardly bent portion 24 of the lip 24.
Various changes may be made without dc- I parting from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
A hair curling appliance comprising a cylindrical member, a channel shaped meinber a clamping member having a lip formed on one end, a spring and a pin, said channel shaped member, cylindrical member and clamp being pivotally connected by said pin, said cylindrical member and channel DAISY D. NIELSEN.
