To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Jonas Rown. a British subject. residing at Natal Bani: Chambers, West Street, Dnrbain Natal, in the Union of South Africa, engineer, whose post-ofiice address is Natal Bank Chambers, Nest Street, Durban, Natal, in the Union of South Africa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Axles for Railway and like Vehicles. of which the Following is a specification.
This invention relates to axles for railway and similar vehicles of the type in which the axle is formed in two parts independently rotatable in a stationary outer casing.
The object of the present invention is to provide a floating axle of the type referred to which is of robust and simple construction.
According to this invention the stationary outer casing for the axle is provided with a pocket or recess at each end adapted to receive one of the independently rotatable portions and the axle ends taper towards each other and each terminates in a cylindrical formation.
The form of the invention as at present preferred is illustrated in the accompanying drawing which is a sectional elevation showing the invention as applied to the axle of a railway vehicle.
As shown in this drawing the invention consists of two exactly similar stub axles A A. each of which is formed as a journal A as its outer end, on which the truck itself is carried, and is provided with a thicker portion A on which the wheel 0 is pressed in the usual way. On that side of the wheel remote from the journal A, each stub axle is formed or provided with a fixed collar D and on the other side of said collar the axle tapers as shown at A to a cylindrical portion A which latter is of 1924. slightly smaller diameter than that of the portion A which carries the wheel.
At the back or" the collar D and separate from the stub axle A, or A, is a flanged collar F in halves, the inner face of which is machined to fit the face of the collar D and the radiused or curved portion A of the axle where the collar D originates.
A cylindrical sheath coupling l3, provided with a pocket at each end and so shaped internally as to accommodate two axles without any undue slackness, surrounds the two stub axles and is held in position by being bolted at E or otherwise secured to the flanged collar F on each axle.
Means are provided for introducing lubricant between the axles A A and the coupling B and for holding the coupling itseli against rotation if desired.
By disconnecting the sheath coupling the whole axle can be very readily dismantled.
I claim An axle for railway and like vehicles comprising two independently rotatable portions each of said rotatable portions being tapered smaller away from the vehicle wheel for a part of its length, a fixed collar on each of said rotatable portions, a twopart flanged collar secured on the outer or wheel side of the collar on each of said rotatable portions and a sheath or coupling mounted on the inner sides of the said fixed collars on the rotatable portions and rigidly secured at each end to the said two-part flanged collars, said sheath or coupling having a reinforcing central web or partition so as to form a pocket or recess on each side of said partition adapted to receive one of the'independently rotatable portions of the axle.
