The mandrel, besides having the spaces 17C to receive the partition stock is formed with the recesses 17d into which the material for the lugs is placed and then before the mandrel is positioned upon the. support 18 the piece of rubber stock which is to form the bottom of the battery jar is placed upon the upper end of the mandrel as thus supported. The mandrel support is provided with a clip 18 at the back of the support and clips 18 at the sides thereof, which clips 18b are connected to a bar 18C which is arranged in a recessed portion of the support 18 and is connected to any suitable form of fluid operated piston by means of which the bar 18c is moved up and down in order to bring the clips 18 into or out of engagement with the base of the mandrel. The plates 14 and 15 are provided with off-center tension springs attached to suitable pins mounted on the upper ends of the plates for holding these plates under pressure in either their opened out or their closed positions, their ope-ning movement being limited by the abutting of their rear edge faces against t-he adjacent edge faces of the plates 12, and 13, respectively.
The two plates 14C and 15 act as folders for the two ends of the margins of the side forming sheet of stock and they also form the side seam as illustrated most clearly in Fig. 9. On these plates I provide a pair of coacting longitudinal blades lll.a and 15a, respectively, for forming the seams, said blades having a shearing action to trim ott the excess from the overlapping edge of the niaterial.
The upper ends of the plates 11 and 12, 13, 14 and 15 are provided with shallow inwardly projecting flanges 11b, 12b, 13b, l-lb and b having concave forming faces for the purpose of turning the edges of the side forn'iing sheet around those of the bottom forming sheet to make the bottom edge seams. For clamping the folded plates together in closed position upon the work, l provide a hand lever 19 hung on a pivot between the arms of a fork 2O and having a hub cam 21 cooperating with a complemental locking member 22 arranged and operating in substantially the same manner as similar parts in my patent previously referred to. As previously stated a piece of stock is placed u'pon the upper end of the mandrel for the purpose of providing a bottom to the battery jar; and for the purpose of binding said piece of stock to the mandrel while the jar is being formed I employ a head or plunger carried at the lower end of a rod 31 which works up and down in bearings 10d constituting a part of the frame and actuated preferably by the fluid operated piston 32 through the medium of links 33 and bail 34, said links and bail constituting a toggle. The up and down movements of the rod 31 are limited by means of a stop 35 adjustably mounted upon the rod and adapted to contact with the bearing portions of the frame. On the edges of the plunger are mounted four downwardly projecting plates 36 for compressing the inwardly turned edges of the side forming sheet which overlap the margins of the bottom forming sheet to constitute the bottom seams, these plates sliding on the edge-turning flanges 12a, 12b, etc. The ends of the plunger plates as well as the ends of the edge-turnng fianges carried by the side plates meet so as to form complete quadrangles.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I have shown slightly modified forms of plates 11C, 12C, 13c and 14, doing away with the plate 15 and it will be noted that each plate is formed with an upwardly curved edge 40 so that when the four plates are folded together as shown in Fig. 5, the stock folded about the mandrel will be given rounded corners as most clearly shown in Fig. 5 and any suitable form of locking mechanism may be employed for binding the parts together.
The work-table can be arranged in advance of the main frame and upon which the mandrels can be placed preparatory to being arranged upon the mandrel rest l()e just before being introduced into the machine or from which the mandrels with the jar thereon can be placed after said jar has been formed and removed with the mandrel from the machine. By arranging the mandrel and the folding parts in substantially a vertical position, it will be much easier to manipulate the machine inasmuch as the mandrel can be quickly and easily pushed from the rest 10c onto the support 18 and the stock can be easily arranged upon the opened out plates upon the ledge 16 and then as soon as the mandrel with the partition strips arranged therein is placed upon the mandrel support, the hinged plates can be folded around the mandrel, carrying with it the stock to form the sides and the bottom forming piece with the lugs having been previously arranged upon the top of the mandrel, the plunger can be lowered and the seam forming operations completed.

It Will thus be seen that I provide a simple and highlv eiiicient battery jar forming machine capable of carrying out all of the objects hereinbefore referred to.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
l. In a battery jar forming machine, the combination with foldable means for supporting a sheet of stock substantially vertical and a mandrel contacting with a sec tion of said foldable means, said section of the foldable means being fixed and adapted to maintain the mandrel stationary While the sheet of stock is folded around said mandrel.
2. In a battery jar forming machine, the combination with a main frame having a back, base and mandrel rest, of a mandrel support attached to the base, a plate rigidly connected to the back, a plurality of plates hinged to the first named plate and to each other, a mandrel adapted to be attached to the mandrel support and a plunger cooperating With said mandrel and hinged plates, retaining elements for releasably locking the mandrel on its support, and means for moving said retaining elements toward and away from the support to secure said mandrel.

In a battery jar forming machine, the combination with a fixed mandrel support, of a mandrel comprising a base portion and a plurality of spaced sections, clips at opposite sides of said support adapted to engage the mandrel, a connection between said clips, and means for moving said clips to- Ward the support to lock the mandrel thereon, and a plurality of hinged plates arranged substantially vertical and adapted to envelop the mandrel.

In a battery jar forming machine, the combination With a main frame having a back, base and mandrel rest, a mandrel support attached to the base, a rigid plate attached to the back and hinged pla-tes connected to said rigid plate, a mandrel comprising a base portion and spaced sections adapted to be connected to the mandrel support, retaining elements for releasably securing the mandrel on said support, means beloiv said support for actuating said retaining elements to secure said mandrel on said support and a. plunger cooperating with said mandrel together with means connected to the main frame for operating' said plunger.

In a battery jar forming machine, the combination With a main frame, of a. mandrel supportconnected to said main frame, a plate rigidly connected to said main frame, plates hinged to said rigid plate, a mandrel adapted to be attached to said mandrel support and be enveloped by the hinged and fixed plate, piston actuated retaining elements for securing the mandrel on the support and a vertically movable plunger coopcrating with the mandrel and hinged plates.
11. In a battery jar forming machine, a mandrel support, a mandrel adapted to be arranged theron, a lixed clip for holding said mandrel to the support and movable clips together with means for moving said movable clips.
12. In a battery jar forming machine, the combination with a main frame having a slightly inclined base, a mandrel support attached to said base, a xed plate and a plurality oit hinged plates, a mandrel land a mandrel rest arranged in advance oit' the mandrel support as set forth.

In a battery jar forming mach-ine, the combination With a main frame having a slightly' inclined base, a mandrel support attached to said base, a fixed plate and a plurality of hinged plates, a mandrel and a mandrel rest arranged in advance of the mandrel support as set forth, and a vertically movable plunger cooperating with the mandrel and foldable plates and piston 0perated clips for releasably locking the mandrel on its support.
