CANDLE PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Nonnnnr Gnorrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at West Union, in the county of .Todd and State of Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Candle Protectors,

of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to candle protectors and its principal object is to provide a candle protector that will eliminate the usual flow of wax down the candle sides incident to the burning of the candle.

Another object of the invention is to provide acandle protector which will prevent draught to the lighted end of the candle and eliminate the undue melting of the wax incident to draught.

The invention also contemplates a candle protector which will prevent the accumulation of wax in the usual candle extinguisher as the latter is placed over the lighted end thereof and thereby obviates the danger of the WflK soiling the clothes of the-person who is extinguishing the candle.

With the preceding and other objects and ad antages in view, the invention consists in the novel combination of elements, construction, arrangement of parts and operations to be hereinafter specifically referred to, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation of the candle with the invention associated therewith, the invention being shown in vertical section.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the protector.

The invention as reduced to practice co1n prises a frusto conical sleeve or hood indicated by the numeral 5 and has its upper end open as at 6 and further provided with a series of circumferentially arranged air inlet openings 7 in the side walls. As shown in Figure 1, the base of the sleeve or hood :3 flared as at 8 to provide a skirt flange 9 that extends around the upper end of the candle.

Adapted to embrace the upper end of the candle at a point below the wick is a retaining annulus 10. This retaining-annulus is semicircular in cross section and has an ex Serial No. 26,480.

tension or flange 11 which is criinped or otherwise secured to the lower edge of the skirt or flange 9, so as to secure the part 5 to the retaining element.

In order to cause the device to descend as the candle is burned, the sleeve 10 houses a weight element 12. This weight element 12 is in the form of an annulus and is circular in cross section and may be formed by pouring molten metal into this annulus 10.

From the disclosure it will be apparent that I have provided a simple and inexpensive article which will eliminate draught on the lighted end of the candle and the incident wasting of wax. Moreover, any wax that is not burned flows onto the weighted element 12 and builds up upon this weighted element to fill the space between the skirt 9 and the sides of the candle thus causing all the wax to be burned. .liurthermore, as the candle burns the weighted element 12 causes the device to gravitate as the candle is consumed.

While I have shown and described the preferred embodii'nent of the invention, I desire to have it understood that such changes may be made in the form, construc tion, arrangement of parts and operations, as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.

What is claimed is A candle protector of the character described comprising a semi-circular in cross section annulus adapted to embrace a candle adjacent the upper end thereof, a hood rising from the annulus and having an open upper end adapted to overlie the lighted end of the candle, a skirt depending from said hood and connected to the annulus by an outwardly extended flared portion which has its upper end arranged to engage the outer upper edge of the candle, the remaining portion of the skirt being spaced from the walls of the candles between the upper end and the annulus engaging portion to provide a space for the accumulation of melted wax, and a weight housed within the semi-circular annulus for the purpose specified.
