ELECTRC ,l/"ATER HEATER.
Application :filed July 25, i924, Serial No. 728,163.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, Grenen R, Corzrimbr, a citizen ot the United States, residing at Miami, in the county of Dade and State of Florida, have invented certain new and uset'ul Improvements in Electric later Heat ers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to water heaters and pertains particularly to the class ot electric water heaters.
The primary object ot this invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of an electric water' heater oit improved construction, which is adapted to be placed in the water line to allow the water to pass therethrough and to heat the same during its passage through the heater.
A. still further object of the invention is the provision, in amanner as hereinafter set forth, of an electric heater havin'g an improved heating unit adapted to be easily and quickly removed from the device in a single unit without the necessity ot disconnecting the device trom the water line. or otherwise disassembling the same.
A still further object of the invention is the provision, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, of an electric water heater having a controlling rheostat by means oit which a large current can he turned on to quickly heat the water or the current can be cut down to a very low point to keep thc water heated 'for any length of time desired. i
A still further and final object ot the invention is the provision, in a manner Vas hereinafter set forth, of an electric water heater ot simple construction, easily and quickly disassembled -for cleanii-g` or rcplacement oli part-s, oit neat appearance, eilicient, and inexpensive to manutactiue and install.
The invention will be best understood trom a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a` part of this specitication, with the understanding that the invention is not conned to any strict conformity with the showing ot the drawing hut may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient 'features of the invention as Iexpressed in the appended claim,
In the drawings:
Figure l. is a 'front elevation ot the device embodying this invention.
1Figure 2 is a longitudinal sectional view ot the same.
Figure is a transverse sectional View taken upon the line 3-3 of Figure 2, and
Figure t is a transverse sectional view taken upon the line 4 4 of Figure 2,
Referring now to the drawings in `detail wherein lil-te numerals oit reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the device embodying this' invention comprises a casing l of substantial length and here shown as circular in cross section, although this particular design is not essential and it is to be'understood that the structure is not conlined to this type ot body. The body l is normally vertically positioned and has peripheral threads 2 at its lower end and is internally threaded as at 3 at its upper end.. The lowerv end ot the body l is closed by the bottom cap which has the upstanding annular portion 5 interiorly threaded to engage the peripheral threads 2 ct the body and the underside ot the can is drawn or tapered at (i to the interiorly threaded depending outlet nipple this nipple one end ot an inlet water pipe S is adapted to be threaded. i
Att the upper end oit the body l there is located the head portion indicatedv as a whole hy the numeral 9. This head if? is oi greater diameter than the body l as shown, and the lower portion thereoi1 is drawn in wardlvas at l0 to providetl'lelronstricted -lower terminal portion ll wh'icli' is exteriorly threaded and adapted to engage in the interiorthreads 3 at the upper end ot the casing l as shown. The upper portion ot the head 9V is interiorly 'hreaded as at 1.3 and further has -Formed about the upper edge thereof the annular iiangeo collar 14, Formed upon the body of the head 9 is a right angular extension l5 through which a threaded aperture is formed, and also through the body into the interior oit the head, and into this threaded aperture one end of a. water outlet pipe 16 is adapted to be threaded.
Fitted into the upper end of the head 9 is a heating unit support indicated as a Whole by the numeral 17,. @this heating unit,
7u vliuto vwhen the saineis threaded :support comprises a lower interiorly and exteriorly threaded sleeve 18 adapted to be threaded into the upper end ot' the head 9 engaging the threads 13 as shown .in Fig ure 2, and the upper port-ion ot this sleeve 18 has formed integral therewith an annular collar 19 which, as shown, is of greater diameter than the sleeve 18 and overhangs the outer side thereoil to abut the top snrface ot the annular lla-nge 14 ot' the head.
The interior diameter of this collar 19 is` also greater than the interior diameter ot' the sleeve 1S.
Threaded into the sleeve 13 from the lower end thereof is a plug ot insulation 2() which plug may be 'termed othard rubber, bakelite, glass, porcelain or any other appropriate insulating material. The lower port-ion of the plug is ot greater diameter than the body to 'form the annular rim 21 which when'the plug'is tlnieaded into the sleeve'18 bearsagainst and binds ae inst the lower end ot the sleeve and insulating washer 22. The upper end ot the plug 2U, into the sleeve 18, is flush with the upper edge et the Isleeve as shown;
Formed vlongitudinally'through the plug 20'are three apertures through which certain conducting elements are ada )ted to e2;- tend. Positioned within the body 1 is Va heating element, `indicated as a. whole by the numeral 23, consisting ot a'lower transverse or body portion2t'lroin whichtransverse body portion there extends three tical electrodes 25, 26`and 27, respectively, the central electrode 26 being shorter than the 1twol electrodes '25 and 27, as sho vn, and having threaded to thereduced portion 28 at the upper end thereof the conductor wire 29, thefupper end'ot which is odset asat 30 and extended upwardly as at 31 through one'of the passages through the plug` 20. The upper end oi'ythis conducting wire is threaded'- to receive' thereon a thumb nnt 32'. The electrodes 25 and 27extend'tothe underside 'of the'plug 2O and are then reduced to provide the/reduced conducting elements 33 which' extend through 'the Vother two"apertures inthe plug 20, andeach ot these conductii'ig elements 33 has "its upper end threaded in the manner similar to-that of the conductor'element 31A to receive 'thereonsimilar thumb nuts 341A. The heating element 23 may be formed ot some metalot high resistance'which when'current is :forced therethrough will become heated and thereby heat the water which surrounds it,
