Be it known that JAMES W. LYNCH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Alexandria, county of Madison, State of Indiana, has invented an Improvement in Take-Out .Devices for Bottle-Blowing Machines, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention aims to provide an improved automatic means for transferring or removing the finished or partly finished ar ticles from the molds of automatic or semiautomatic glass-blowing machines, for'example of the type as shown in ap icatien Serial No. 172,678, filed June 4, 191%, by me jointly with Edward G. Bridges.
The subject matter claimed therein is taken from the abovementioned application, with respect to which subject matter I am the sole Inventor.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have shown one embodiment of the invention.
for purposes of illustration, Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view, partly in side elevation and partly in cross-section, of a portion of a glass blowing machine, showing the take-out device in its normal position ready to grasp and remove a finished article from the mold;

In the particular embodiment of my invention selected for illustration herein and shown in the drawings, referring to Fig. 1, the ware is finished by blowing in separable molds 10, attached to a rotatabletable 11,
provided with suitable means, preferably operated by compressed air, for rotating it intermittently in synchronism with the other parts of the machine, as for example, shown and described in said application Serial No. 172,678. A conveyor 12 is also provided for removing the ware from the machine though the device is not restricted to use with a conveyor.

The upper ends of the grippers are loosely secured to a yoke 22 by pins 23 sliding in slots 24 in the grippers, so that when the yoke 1s ralsed by means of a piston 25 on its upper end which works in a cylinder 26 in the carrier the lower ends of the grippers are I The yoke 22 has a slot 27 m its lower end to embrace the pin 19 so It may have some vertical movement before it raises the pin. A spring pressed 7 plunger 28 slidable in an axial hole in the yoke normally holds the pin 19 in its lowermost position in the slots 20.
Freferably as the molds containing finished ware are opened as they approach the position of the take-out devlce by suitable means, such as the cam 29 which engages a roller upon the yoke 30 to which the mold closing links 31 are secured, as shown in Fig. 2, leaving the ware standing on the $5 mold bottom 32 and with its neck in osition to be grasped by the fingers 21 o the take-out device.
Compressed air for operating the take-out to remove the ware is supplied through the main 33, in which in the illustrative device the pressure is on whenever the table is stationary and is cut off automatically before the table starts to rotate.
When the air comes on in the main 33 the yoke 22 is raised by the piston 25, and the grippers are first swung together to grasp the ware. When they can swlng no closer together because either they are stopped by the ware between them or the pin 19 is'engaged by the bottom of the slot 27 in the yoke, further movement of the yoke lifts them bodily, together with the ware, until the piston 25 reaches the top of itsstroke and uncovers the port 34 in the side wall of the cylinder 26 and admits air through the hollow piston rod 35 to the cylinder 16, whereupon the piston 15 is moved to slide the carrier l3 and its load away from the table 11 and over the conveyor 12, where it is preferably held suspended until just before the table starts to rotate.
Preferably the pressure in the main 33 is cut off immediately before the movement of the table and compressed air is admitted to the main 36 and to the top of the cylinder 26, thereby forcing down the piston 25 and lowering the yoke 22 and grippers untll the pin 19 strikes the lower end of the slots 20, whereupon further lowering of the yoke swings the grippers apart and releases the ware to be carried away on the conveyor 12. The speed of movement of the piston 25 may be controlled by suitable valves 37 in the connections from the mains to the cylinder 26.
The conveyor is moved intermittently 1n synchronism with the table by a ratchet 38 or other suitable mechanism operated in forward direction by air pressure from the main 33 and in reverse direction by air pressure from the main 36 acting on a piston 39 in a cylinder 40. The speed of operation of the conveyor may be controlled by a suitable valve 41 in the pipe connecting the main 33 with the cylinder 40.
The return movement of the carrier 13 is effected in the illustrative device after the table has rotated part way by means of a cam 42 on the table which operates a valve 43 in an air pipe 44 connected to the pressure main 86 and leading to the outer end of the cylinder 16. This valve is normally held closed by a spring or other suitable means, in which position the pipe 44 is open to the atmosphere through the valve groove and port 45 (shown in dotted lines in D The exhaust air from the inner end of the cylinder 16 passes through the hollow piston rods around the groove 46 in the piston 25 and escapes through the port 47 in the side wall of the cylinder 26. Thus the piston 25 operates as a valve for the carrier moving cylinder 16.
The table turning mechanism and valves for controlling the admission of air to the mains 33 and 36 are not shown as such devices are in common use and well understood by persons skilled in the art.
My invention obviously is not restricted to the particular embodiment thereof herein illustrated and described, nor to the particular purpose stated. For example, a similar device may be utilized for transferring a partly finished article from one mold to another.
In the claims the words ware or article are used to designate the partly finished blank or parison as well as the finished bottle or jar.
Having described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is -as follows:
1. In a glass working machine, a movable table and series of molds carried thereby, means for openin Y said molds at a predetermined point in t eir movement, a conveyor adjacent said point, and a take-out device for transferring glass ware from said molds at said point to said conveyor, said take-out device comprising a laterally movable carrier, a vertically movable yoke mounted thereon, and arms carrying grippers at their outer ends pivotally connected to said carrier intermediate their ends and to said yoke at their ends remote from the grippers, said pivotal connections having limited freedom of movement whereby raising said yoke first swings and then elevates said grippers, and continuously acting means for restraining said grippers against lifting movement until the gripping action is completed.
2. In a glass working machine, a movable table and series of molds carried thereby, means for opening said molds at a predetermined point in their movement, and a take-out device for'transferring glass ware from said molds at said point, said takeout device comprising a laterally movable carrier, a vertically movable yoke mounted thereon, and arms carrying grippers at their outer ends pivotally connected to said carrier intermediate their ends and to said yoke at their ends remote from the grippers, said pivotal connections having limited freedom of movement whereby raising said yoke first swings and then elevates said grippers, and continuously acting means for restraining said grippers against lifting movement until the gripping action is completed, comprising a spring ressed member mounted in said yoke an engaging the pivot connection between said grippers and carrier to hold it at the lower limit of its movement relative to said carrier.
In a glass working machine, a movable table and series of molds carried thereby, means for opening said molds at a predetermined point in their movement, aconveyor adjacent said point, and a take-out device for transferring glass were from said molds at said point to said conveyor, said take-out device comprising a laterally movable carrier, a vertically movable yoke mounted thereon, and arms carrying grippers at their outer ends pivotally connected to said carrier intermediate their ends and to said yoke at their ends remote from the grippers, said pivotal connect-ions having limited freedom of movement whereby raising said yoke first swings and then elevates said grippers, and continuously acting means for restraining said grippers against lifting movement until the gripping action is completed, and means for moving said conveyor and table in synchronism.
4. In a glass working machine, a movable table and series of molds carried thereby, pneumatic means for moving said table, means opening said molds at a predetermined point, and a take-out device for transferring glass ware from said molds at said point to said conveyor, said take-out device com rising a laterally movable carrier, a vertically movable yoke mounted thereon, and arms carrying grippers at their outer ends pivotally connected to said carrier intermediate their ends and to said yoke at their ends remote from the grippers, said pivotal connections having limited freedom of movement whereby raising said yoke first swings and then elevates said grippers, and continuously acting means for restraining said grippers against lifting movement until the gripping action is completed, and pneumatic means for moving said conveyor and table in synchronism.

In a glass working machine, a movable table and series of molds carried thereb pneumatic means for moving said table, means opening said molds at a predetermined point, and a take-out device for transferring glass ware from said molds at said point to said conveyor, said take-out device comprising a laterally movable carrier, a vertically movable yoke mounted thereon, and arms carrying grippers at their outer ends pivotally connected to said carrier intermediate their ends and to said yoke at their ends remote from the grippers, said pivotal connections havin limited freedom of movement whereby raising said yoke first swings and then elevates said grippers, pneumatic means for raising said yoke in synchronism with movement of said table, and continuously acting means for rest-raining said grippers against lifting movement until the gripping action is completed, and pneumatic means for moving said conveyor and table in alternation.

In a glass working machine, a movable table and a series of molds carried thereby, means for opening said molds at a predetermined point in their movement, a take-out device comprising movable grippers adapted to grasp ware in said molds at said point, a conveyor, means for moving'said table and conveyor intermittently in synchronism, means for raising said grippers and moving them toward said conveyor, means for lowering said grippers to deposit the ware upon said conveyor, and means for moving said lowered grippers toward said table while it is rotating to bring them into gripping alinement with another mold as it approaches the discharging position.
7 In a glass working machine, a movable table and a series of molds carried thereby,
means for opening said molds at a pre-' determined point in their movement, a take out device comprising movable grippeis adapted to grasp ware in said molds at said point, a conveyor, means for movmg said table and conveyor intermittently in synchronism, means for successively closing and raising said grippers and moving them toward said conveyor, means for successively lowering and opening said grippers to deposit the ware upon said conveyor, and means for moving said lowered open grippers toward said table while it is rotating to bring them into gripping alinement with another mold as it approaches the discharging position.
8. A. take-out device for glass working machines comprising a carrier mounted for to and fro movement, a vertically slidable pivot member arranged in said carrier, opposed grippers pivoted thereon, a power operated member movable vertically in said carrier and having means engaging said grlppers for swinging them on said pivot member and means for lifting said pivot and grippers, and spring pressed means ca ried by said power operated member for restraining said pivot against lifting previously to movement of said power operated member to swing said grippers.

Glass bottle blowing apparatus comprising a travelingsectional mold, and a pincer carrying device for removing Ware from the mold including a stationary support providing a horizontal slide way, a slide reciprocable along said way, and direct connected piston and cylinder mechanism for effecting movement of the slide as to the way.
10. In a glass machine, a mold table,
molds on said table, gripping tongs, an air cylinder and piston for giving vertical movement to said tongs, a second air cylinder and piston operatively connected to the first for giving horizontal movement to said tongs, means for admitting air to said first named cylinder to actuate the piston to permit said tongs to grip the ware while in the mold and then move it up. and means for controlling and admitting air to said second named cylinder only after the operation of said first named cylinder to bodily move it and the ware laterally.
11. In a glass blowing machine, the combination with a blow table, a blow mold and means for automatically opening, the blow mold, of pneumatically operated means for gripping the end of an article in the mold subsequent to the opening of the mold, and lifting the said article, a slidable support for said means, and pneumatically operated means for sliding the support radially from the table, and delivering the lifted article outwardly from the table.
12. In a glass machine, a mold table,
molds on said table, gripping tongs, an air cylinder and piston for giving vertical movement to said tongs, a second air cylinder for giving horizontal movement to said tongs, and means for admitting and controlling air to said cylinders to permit movement of said tongs down to grip the articles, up and then laterally away from the molds.
13. Glassware forming apparatus comprising a traveling sectional mold, mechanism for opening the mold, a slide as to which the mold may travel. relatively movable members carried by the slide for engaging the ware released by the mold? additional means shifting the members for removing the member held ware from the mold, and a driving device for the mechanism and means.
14. Glassware forming apparatus comprising a mold having pivotally connected sections, mechanism for moving the mold sections for opening the mold, a slide reciprocable transversely of mold travel, relatively movable members carried by the slide for engaging the ware released by the mold, additional means for shifting the members for removing the ware through the mold opening directly away from the pivotal connection of the sections, and a driving device for the mechanism and means.
15. In a glass blowing machine, the combination with a blow table, ablow mold. and means for opening the blow mold, said mold being movable successively to separate stations, of pneumatically operated means for gripping one end of, an article in the open mold, a stationarysupport for-said means extending radially relative to the axis of the table, and pneumatically operated means for sliding the article gripping means longitudinally of the support and delivering the article outwardly from the blow table, to deposit the article.
16. Glassware forming apparatus comprising a rotatable carrier, a mold mounted thereon comprising sections movable to open the mold, mechanism for moving the mold sections to open the radially remote side of the mold,a conveyor adjacent the carrier, a slide extending radially of the carrier in its reciprocation, relatively movable members carried by the slide for engaging the ware released by the mold, additional means for shifting the members for removing such ware to the conveyor, and a driving device for the carrier, mechanism, conveyor and means.
17. In a glass blowing machine. the combination with a revoluble blow table, and a blow mold movable with the table, of means for automatically opening the blow mold when brought to a predetermined position, a guide fixedly mounted above the mold at said position, a member slidable on the guide, article gripping devices carried by said member, pneumatically operated means .for successively shifting said devices into engagement with the article in the open mold, and raising the article, pressure operated means at one end of the guide for shifting the slidable member with the elevated article, and means for reversing the pressure to lower the gripping devices, release them from the engaged article. and return the slidable member to its initial position, said returning means operating only after saidgripping devices have released said article.

In a transfer. or take-out device for a glass machine having movable molds, a mechanisn'i for transferring the article from a mold to a point remote therefrom comprising a pneumatically operated article engaging means, operable to elevate the article and move it laterally to a position to be deposited, and means for effecting the lateral movement subsequently to the lifting movement of the article.
19. In a transfer or take-out device for a glass machine having movable molds, a mechanism for transferring the article from a mold to a point remote therefrom comprising a pneumatically operated article engaging means, operable to elevate the article and move it laterally to a position to be deposited, and means for causing the same air to effect both movements so arranged that the lateral movement is not instituted until after the elevating movement has been effected.
20. In a transfer or take-out device for a glass machine having movable molds, a mechanism for transferring the article from a mold to a point remote therefrom comprising an article engaging member, fluid pressure means for giving vertical movement to said member, additional fluid pressure means for giving lateral movement to said member, and means for admitting and controlling fluid to said fluid pressure means to permit movement of the members to engage the article, lift it, and then move it laterally away from the mold.
21. In a transfer or take-out device for glass machines having movable molds, an
article engaging member, an air cylinder and piston for giving vertical movement to said member, a second air cylinder and piston operatively connected to the first for giving horizontal movement to said member, means for admitting air to said first named cylinder to actuate the piston to permit said member to engage the article while in the mold and then move it up, and means for controlling and admitting air to said second named cylinder only after the operation of said first named cylinder to bodily move it and the ware laterally.
22. In a take-out or transfer device for a glass machine having molds, the combination of coacting ware engaging members, a support on which said members are carried, a fluid pressure mechanism adapted to move said members vertically, a second fluid pressure mechanism adapted to movesaid support horizontally, a valve controlling the admission of pressure to said fluid pressure mer nisms, and means whereby said valve is actuated by the operation of said glass machine.
23. In a take-out or transfer device for a glass machine having molds, the combination of coacting ware engaging members, a
support on which said members are carried,
a fluid pressure mechanism adapted to move said members vertically, a second fluid pres-.
sure mechanism adapted to move said support horizontally, a valve controlling the admission of pressure to saidfirst fluid pressure mechanism, means whereby said valve is actuated by the operation of said'glass machine, and .means whereby said first named mechanism cont'rolsthe admissionof power to said second named mechanism.

Ina glass blowing machine, the combination with an intermittently rotatable table,'a mold .and means for automatically opening the mold, of vertically [operating pneumatically actuated means'forripping the end of an article in the mold s' u sequent; to the opening of the mold, and liftingsaid article, and horizontally operatin matically actuated; means for de iveri'ng vsaid article outwardly from the mold;
26. In a glass machine, a mold table,
molds on said table adapted toshape'glass articles, gripping tongs, an air cylinder and piston for giving vertical movement to'said tongs, a second air cylinder and piston for giving horizontal movement tosaid tongs, and means for controlling and admitting air pneu from the molds, and then laterally away from the molds. x r 27. intermittently rotatable table having molds thereon, a. support adjacent to the edge of said table, article engaging means carried by said support and adapted to be actuated to grip the article in the mold and lift it therefrom, fluid pressure mechanism for ac additional pneumatically actuated means for moving said support to move the engaging means and article held thereby laterally away from the mold in combination with fluid pressure control-means for synchronizing said gripping, lifting and lateral movementswith the movement of said. table.

In a take-out or transfer device for a glass machine havingmolds, the combination of co-acting members for engaging'the neck .or mouthfinish of. the ware, a movable support for said members,a fluid pressure mechanism adapted to move said support and members vertically, a second fluid pressure mechanism adapted to move said support and'members horizontally, avalve control ling the admission of pressure to said fluid pressure mechanism, and means for automatically actuating-said valve.
30. In a transfer or take-out device for glass bottle making machines having molds,
