In the use of the device, the pedal L 1s forced forwardly by the foot to its greatest possible extent and the hand lever 27 is then moved in the direction of the arrow This causes the hook to be engaged'with the lever L and prevent its return movement, thus holding the band associated with the lever in its operative rlhe point of engagement of' the lever with the hook will be determined by thecondition 'of this band. If the band be but newly applied, the point of engagement will be at the outer end of' the lever but after the band becomes worn, the engagement will be further and further away Jfrom said outer end. This hook, when in applied position, will serve to hold the low-speed pedal in'its operative position without the necessity of the drivers placing his foot thereon, thus relieving the driver considerably when the machine is operating under heavy loads, ascending high hills or moving in the face oi"Y a high wind. When it is desired to release the pedal, all that is necessary is the application of pressure to the pedal, tending to force the same forwardly and releasing the p edal from its engaged notch. Vfirs soon as this notch isreleased',vthe spring 30 will act to move the hand lever 27 in theV direction opposite to that of the arrow A, causing the hook to be disengaged and the pedal released for its normal operation.
Since the constructionv hereinbefore set forth is obviously capable of a certain range of change and modification without materially departing from the splritoi` my invention, l do not limit myself to such specific structure except as hereinafter claimed.

'In combination with a transmission including a 'pedal .oscillatable in a vertical plane, the oscillation of the pedal to one extreme of its movement being variable, a spring tending to return the pedal from `the last named position, a latch pivotally supported from the transmission housing to swing in a horizontal plane, said latch having` a pedal engaging face provided with notches for the reception of the pedal, said pedal engaging face `being spirally disposed to the pivot of the latch, means likewise supported from the transmission casing oscillatable in a substantially vertical plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the pedal for shifting said latch into pedal enygaging position and a spring operatively engaged with the latch for moving the latch to position where the pedal is released.
