A TTOHNEYS Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
UNITED STATES J. PAUL BROWN, OF ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
UNION SUIT.
Application led October 28, 1922. Serial No. 597,589.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, J. PAUL BROWN, a citizen of the United States, `and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Union Suits, of
, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in union suits, and the objectv of the invention is to vprovide a union suitwherein the .crotch seam and belt effect are entirely elimof this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing thegpreferred embodiment of the invention; r'lgue 2 1s a plan View of the three pieces which together with the button strips make 3o up the suit;
Figure 3 is a view in section, taken approximately on line 3-3 of Figure 1;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the lower part of the union suit, showing the manner in which the parts are associated; and
Figure 5 is an enlarged section of the i front part of the garment, taken on the same line as Figure 3 but showing the button strips disassociated from each other.
Referring to the drawings it will be seen that the union suit is made up of three pieces, two combined front and side pieces, designated at 10 and u11, respectively, and a back piece designated at 12, and a pair of button strips, designated at 13, and 14, respectively. The combined front and side pieces 10 and 11 are of identical construction and are formed with continuous straight vertical edges 15 and 16, respectively to which the button strips 13 and 14 are respectively attached. At the upper ends of the pieces 10 and 11 tabs 17 and 172l and 18 and 18"L respectively are formed which coact with siniilar tabs 19 and 19a and 2O and 20a formed on the back piece to complete the neck and arm openings of the garment, the tabs 17' Y and 17a and 18 and 18a being secured to the tabs 19 and 19a and 20 and 20, respectively.
The edges 21 and 22 of the pieces 10 and 1l,
respectively, are secured by lines ofstitching to the edges 23 and 24, respectively of the back piece 12 to completely close the back of the garment. a
At' one 'side of thelower end of the pieces 10 and 11 pointed extensions 25 and 26 re'- spectively are formed, these extensions being of simple construction and being in general of triangular shape. The lower end of the.
back piece 12 is also formed with extensions, there being two extensions on the back piece, designated at 27 and 28, respectively, both of these extensions being similarly formed and presenting inclined edges 27a and 28a, respectively. f
In the form of garment illustrated vthe button strip 13 is stitched to the vertical edge 15 of the piece 10 and carries the buttons 30 while the button strip 14 is stitched to the vertical edge'l from the neck open` ing down to the apex of the crotch. Below the crotch the .button strip 14 is firstA stitched or otherwise secured to the in-4r clined edge 27a of the extension 27 of the back and beyond the extension 27 it is stitched to the tab or extension 25 ofthe piece 10 vso that this button strip 14 is organized with the three pieces of the garment. The other extension or tab 28 is secured by lines of stitching or the like to a portion of the vertical edge 16 of the piece l1 lying just below the crotch and above the bottom of this piece 11, the portion of the vertical edge 16 which lies contiguous with the bottom being secured by lines of stitching or the like to the edge 26a of the extension or tab 26. It is to be noted that the crotch is thus formed by the tabs or extensions 27 and 28 and the adjacent portion of the back 12 and since these tabs are integral with ther back the crotch thus formed is seamless. The front opening of the arment defined by the edges 15 and 16 of. the pieces 10 and 11 or rather by the button strips 13 and 14 secured to these edges extends from the neck opening on a continuous straight line down to and through the crotch for it will be vremembered that the` button strip 14 is first secured to the edge 16 of the piece 11 for that portion of the length of such edge that reaches from the neck opening tothe apex of the crotch and vloo Y beyond the apex of the crotch it is secured first to the extension or tab 27 of the back which goes to make up the crotch and second to the extension 25 of the piece 10 thereby extending through the crotch on a continuous straight line.
In this manner there is obtained a perfect fitting garment made up of three pieces and the button strips and entirely eliminating crotch seams or belt eiects around the waist line. rIhis elimination of the crotch seam and the gathering in the belt line does away with any possibility of the suit pulling or binding in the crotch, the seat of the garment tending rather to pull out instead ot up in the crotch Vline in a sitting position as well as in other positions. Again wichout the necessity of manipulating fastening devices and flaps the garment may be readily, conveniently and with comfort adjusted as required. Moreover these nd- Vantages are obtained while at the saine time the process ofmanuacture is simplilied and the quantity of material consumed reduced.
I claim: f
l. A union suit made up of three pieces and a pair of button strips, said three pieces including a back piece and two combined front and side pieces, the combined 'trent and side pieces having vertical edges and extensions at their lower ends at the opA posite side from said vertical edges, said back piece having a pair of extensions at its lower end and a button strip secured to the vertical edge of one of the combined front and side-pieces from the neck opening to the apex of the crotch, said button strip being also secured to .one of the extensions of the back piece beyond the apex of the crotch and being further secured to the extension of the other combined front and side piece beyond the point where it is secured to the extension of the back piece, the other extension of the back piece being secured to the vertical edge o1 the firstmentioned front piece immediately below the apex of the crotch and the extension of said last mentioned front piece being secured to the lower portion of the vertical edge of said front piece.
2. A union suit comprising a back piece and a pair of combined front and side pieces having edges stitched to the bach piece, the combined front and back pieces also having vertical edges adapted to be releasably secured together and deiining a front opening extending on a lcontinuous straight line from the neck opening through the crotch and through one ofthe leg sections, the back piecev having a pair of integral extensions, one extension being stitched to a portion of the vertical edge of one of the combined front and side pieces, the other extension being releasably secured into a portion oi' the vertical edge of the other combined front and side piece, the combined front and side pieces having :i pair of integral extensions, one of the "extensions of the combined front and side pieces being united to a portion of the vertical edge oi' the combined front and side piece on which it is formed to provide one o'f the leg sections of the garment, the extension of the other combined front and side piece being adapted to be releasably securedL to the vertical edge ot the combined front and side piece on which it is formed te complete the other leg section ol the garment and to provide for the extension of the Yfront opening of the garment through one ot the leg sections as Well as through the crotrh and through the body of the garment.
