WAISTBAND.
Application filed Becernber To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I. Wiliam-ira J. Novi', a citizen of the United States, residing at 1624 South Harding A...venue, Chicago, in the county of Cool; and State of lllinois, have `invented certain new and useful Improveapplied may be eliminated; a further objecty is the provision of a trouser construction whereby the appearance of the inside fork may be improved; additionally an object of thc invention is the velimination of unsightly belt loops, if desired, and the employment of the waistband material for the purpose of forming a continuous or broken tube to receive' the belt; and finally the production of a waistband admitting of the use of the belt entirely within the trousers whereby the exterior portion of the trousers will always present an even top.
These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of the several parts of the trouser band which l' employ, all of which are fully illustrated in the accompanying' single sheet of drawing, hereby made a part of this specification, and in which z.
Figures 1, 2 and 3, are vertical sections showing modes of forming the waistband; and
Figure l is a fragmentary view of a pair of trousers employing the invention.
l'iike reference characters are used to designate similar parts in the drawing and in the descriptive matter which follows.
Reference should first be had to Figure 1. The ordinal 10 designates the material or cloth from which the trouser is made and which is folded upon itself to form the iiiueiportion 11 of the band, and then inwardly or lapped, at its edge 12, to provide i, 192s. sei-iai ivo. stress.
a neat iinish. Secured thereto isa canvas strip 13 having a folded over edge 14 through which stitchv 15 passes into the narrow folded edge 12 of material 10. Lining material 16, which may be doubled, ias illustrated, is disposed intermediate strip 13 and material 10, and attached in' position b'y stitching 17 which passes through material 10, its inner portion 11, canvas strip 13 and lining 16, leaving intermediate strip 13 and material 10 a vertical opening admitting of the insertion of a belt in afmanner to be hereafter described. y n
Passing to Figure 2, the construction comprises material 20 and the folded over inner4 band 21 integral therewith, but no turned in edge is used. Canvas strip 23 disposedbetween portions 20 and 21 has no turned-over edge as in Figure 1. Lining 26y is disposed in substantially the sainev manner as in Figure 1 except that it abuts a piping 202" used to cover the rough edges of inner band 21, and of canvas 23, stitching 27 passing through 20, 21, both sides of piping 20a, and lining 26. The usual belt space is provided between material 20 and canvas strip 23.
Reference should now be had to Figure 3. The waistband here illustrated comprises a piece 30 Aseparate from trouser material 30, the back 31 of the band kbeing formed by folding the material of 30 back upon itself and turning in the edge 32 as in Figure 1. Canvas strip 33 is'secured to edge 32 at its own turned up edge 34 by stitching 35. Lining 36 is disposed as described in F igurev 1, stitching 37 being adapted to secure material 30 and 31, canvas 33, land lining `36 to provide la belt space as in the previously described forins of the invention.
For the insertion of a belt 18, 28, or 38, a
vent or opening 19 (see Figure t) is pro-L vided adjacent each side of the fly of the trouser. f Additional openings may be` made about the band, if desired. Y
It is rquite manifest that the canvas strip 13, 23 and 33, may be eliminated for the material of thev waistband, doubledY over as it is, supplies the stiffness usually required about the waistband of a garment. The combined thicknesses of the trouser material about the waistband gives a body considerably in excess o-f that obtained by one thickness of material to which a canvas strip has been attached.
As hereinabove indicated, an additional object of the invention may be the eliminafg interet tion of belt loops. For purposes of description the space intermediate the two thicknesses of trouser material will be called a tube. It is manifest from an examination ofthe several igures that in any form of the invention slits for the admission of the belt should be placed adjacent the fly. in Figure l the slits 19 are placed upon the outside frontof the trouser. These may be placed upon tie inside in the saine relative position, thus providing a trouser support wholly invisible when in position. There is an additional advantage to placing the belt in the position last described in that the belt will conform to theA contour of the body .while thev top of the trouser niaintains a relatively level and horizontal undistorted position. y
In order to show the modification in the construction of the trouser, additional slits designated 19a are supplied adjacent the back seam of the garment. These are for the purposefof aiding the insertion of the belt in the tube referred to and may prol vide means whereby the belt will give its supporting effect free from the interference occasioned by a plurality of thiclrnesses of material.
'It is equally apparent that slits for the belt may be arranged in conjunction withV the several seams of the garment; also, that the number of slits either inside or outside is immaterial, and that slits may be so arranged that portions of the belt are on the outside of thek garment, portions on the inside, and portions within the tube.
VThe advantages ot' this construction are numerous. No sagging of trousers from belt are possible and the trousers are held by a uniformly disposed frictionv about their entire belt circumference. fi neatness of 'linien is obtainalile,l with a. marked reduction of labor and of materials Lining inaH terial saved because the lining may be accurately cut in this type of trouser. Great er adjustability of the trousers about the bo f isfobtainable and the trousers may be adjustectivelv raised. or lowered by n'ieits or the belt. Y
Cf course, the insertion of a belt may bc tred. but the advantages of the construe ire such that there isa distinct ad- :mce the art in saving lal materials, buslioling and alteration costs.
'in reference to busheling,l and alteration costs it must be noted that great simplicity is had in raising or lowering the position of the waistband. ln, order to lengthen the listance from the fork -to the waistband the po-tion of material ll, 2l and 3l is reluced. To shorten the distan-,ce referred o a greater portion of material lO and 2() Figures l and 2 is turned over and tacked wn. To accomplish this it is only necesto rip out stitches 17 and 27 and rip eainf-, at the back, sides and frontl of This admits of a `rapid alies t inner portions of the trouser material to provide one side of said belt tunnel, and lining material for such trouser comprising a strip of material folded upon itself and with its free edges extending into said tu nel, said trouser material, belt lining` strip, and trouser lining being secured one to another by a single row of stitches.
2. The combination described in claim l, and in which said waistband is formed frein separate strip of material stitched to the trouser material in substantially. the saine horiaontal line as said row of stitching.
ln trouser manufacture, a belt formed of material oi the trouser folded on itself, a lining 'or said belt tunnel "riprising a stiifening material, a trouser ng comprisine' a strip of material folded oon itself, anu means for finishing the .-fe of trouser material comprispinng and a sintre row of stitching, :e several elements or the trouser hereinreferred to being secured one to another y said row of stitching` passing through he trouser material, the turned over por- Yion thereof, the piping upon the raw edge 'l `reef, the lining for said belt tunnel, and he lining` for said trouser. y
