APPARATUS FOR TRONING HATS.
Application filed June 12, 1922. Serial No. 567,731.
T all whom it may concern which permits of the ironing operation be-' ing effected in a quicker and more advantageous manner than could be done with de vices hitherto known.
Another object is to provide an apparatus to iron hats wherein the ironing elements are provided both with hydraulic and me chanical pressure.
Another object is to provide an ironing element which exercises a graduated preseure inside of the top of a hat placed in the ast.
Further advantages will be deduced from the following specification describing the invention in detail and from the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment thereof and in which: f

In these figures is shown a rectangular platform 1 supported by legs 2 onwhich is positioned a casing 3 of horizontal oval cross section having at its base a projecting horizontal flange 3 provided with lugs 3" for receiving screws 4 to screw the casing to the platform. Casln 3 has an upper projecting horizontal flange .5 below which are casing. The bottom of last adjacent theburner 7.

Inside the casing 3 is a gas burner 7 having outlets-8 and fed by a supply pipe 9 passing through boreS in the casing 3. The casing 3 forms a support for a female last 10 formed in the shape of the desired straw hat and including a horizontal flange 10 correspondlng to the hat brim.

(in platform 1. is a standard comprising two supports 16 carrying an upper cross bar 17 connected to the supports by screws 18.
The supports 16 carry vertical guide mem-, bers 19 slidably receiving a movable frame carrying the male last and including a transverse member 20. The ends ofmember 20 have enlargements 20 carrying reduced portions 20 receivable in the vertical guides 19. The central portion f member 20 is formed as shown at21 in an arc and presents members 21 terminatingat the bottom in a horizontal rectangular plate 22' which is shown in Fig. 4 with'front and rear curved recesses 22.

formed to match the brim of a hat to be ironed.

In the center of plate 22 is a. bore 33 which receives-an internally threaded sleeve 34 so as to permit rotary movement but to prevent axial movement. On sleeve 3e are spaced horizontal flanges 34L" fitting above and below the faces of the plate 22. Received in the sleeve 34; is a screw 35 having an operating handle 36- formed integrally with the sleeve 34. In screw 85 there is a centralaperture 37 extending the full length .thereofandalso through a plate 38 connected to thelower end ofthe screw; said plate having-its loweredges beveled as shown in .Fig. j On plate 38Iare outstanding lugs 39 which fit into bores 40 in'the lower face of an .annularplate 41. In plate 41 is an edge channeL 412 forminga beveled peripheral flange 42. Between-the plates 38 and 41 issecured the inturned edge ofa hollow body closed .at its, lower end .andconstituting the male member ofth'e last 10. This member 43 :is made of flexible impermeable material such :as rubber and is firmly held between the plates .38 .andfiange 42 of plate 41 by means of a nut 10 mounted onto screw member .39 and bearing against the upper surfaceof plate 41. Tothe .upper end of 'screw35 isattacheda collar 45 connected to aflexible' tube, :tdwhich communicates with .a pump- 417 for feeding water through the screw member. The pump is operated by a lever 47 and receives its feed water from a .held :betweenextensions 54 of. legs 2.

Rod 64 carries a handle for sliding it in the care 65. At the central-part of member 17 is anenlarged hollow member 67 carrying a horizontal axle 68 supported in bearings 6'? and 68 and retained inside the enlargement 67 by means of collars 67 fixed thereto. On axle 68 a block 69v is eccentricallymounted which block has a cam convex surface. The axle 68 can be rocked in its bearings by nieansof a lever 70 pivoted at-71 to theinner face of of one of the members 1'6 of the standard. rat the end of lever 70. at 72, there is connected a pivoted rod 73 attached at "its upper end to a link 75 whi'chlinlr is in turn fixed to the axle 68.
The operation of the above describeddevice is as follows:
The various parts being considered in the position shown in Fig. 3, a hat 76 is placed within the female last 10, the brim of the hat resting on flange 10. Operating-meld ber 13 is rotated to advence the supportl l until it bears firmly against the lower part of last 10. The gas burners 7 and 32 which respectively heat the last 10 and body 27 are now lightedJ The hand wheel 66 is then rotated to adjust the relative position Next the pedal of the two last members. 53 is depressed xagainst the resistance of counterweights .59- to cause the supporting frame to slide downwardly between the guides 19 and thusbringthe male last together with the member 31 towardlast member 10. .Handle 36 is then operated so as to force 1 the last 43 downwardly to :a greater or lesser extent according to the height of the crown of the hat to :be ironed. Then the. pump 47 is placed in operation bymeans -ofslever 47 and operates to ingect the necessary quantity of water inside the .last 43 so .as to produce the necessary pressure against the top and 7 sides of thecrown of the hat. The pressure gauge 46 will indicate when the required pressure has eeen reachedf Next thelever 70 is depressed to cause cam member 69to swingdownwardly and depress rod 64 to a greaterv or lesser extent according to requirements, as shown in Fig.

It Will be noted that the various parts forming the male and female lasts are removable and can be readily interchanged for other last members of different sizes suitable for different sized and shaped hats.
It is of course evident that various changes can be made. in the construction as described above Without departing from the spirit of this invention except as prescribed by the appended claims.
We claim 1. An apparatus for ironing hats, comprising, a supporting structure, a male last, a. female last, a movable frame carried by the supporting structure and-carrying the male last, frame moving mechanism for interengaging the lasts, and a second means for forcing the lasts together, said second means comprising, a threaded shaft adjust ably threaded into said movable frame, and having a smooth portion sli'dable in an apertured portion of the supporting structure, and means for exerting pressure on the free end of the threaded shaft, whereby to force the lasts into closer engagement, the last said means comprising, a pivoted operating lever, a pivoted shaft positioned adjacent the apertured portion of the supporting structure, a link connection beWeen the opmale last, frame moving mechanism for interengaging the lasts, and a' second means for forcing the lasts together, the male last having cooperating fluid pressing means, said second means comprising, a. threaded shaft adjustably threaded into said movable frame, and having a smooth portion sli'dable in an apertured portion of the supporting structure, and means for exerting pressure on the free end of the threaded shaft, whereby to force the lasts into closer engagement, the last said means comprising, a pivoted operating lever, a pivoted shaft positioned adjacent the apertured portion of the supporting structure, a link connection between the operating lever and pivoted shaft, and a cam member, carried by the pivoted shaft, and operable by the operating lever, to bear against the end of the threaded shaft.
