IMPROVEMENT IN GELLAR-GRATINGS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,9 ll, dated October 13, 1874 application filed March 24, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AARON WrssLER, of Brunersville, in the county of Lancaster, in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Cast-Iron Gellar Grates and Frames, of which the following is a specification:

The object of my invention is to supply a casting much wanted. I combine a hinged sash for glass, and a hinged grate with the frame, to wall in for cellars7 operated on a single pivot-rod, so that the sash with its glass can be opened for ventilation when not required to keep out the cold, or both the sash and the grate can be opened, to leave the frame clear to admit fuel or the like, so hung and arranged as to lock all firmly together inside by a single pin or bolt.

The accompanying drawing, with letters of reference and a brief explanation, will enable any one skilled in the art to cast or use the same, in which- Figure l shows an inside view of the sash and grate in the frame. Fig. 2 shows the combination of the three in perspective, partly open.

The outer frame A is cast with projecting ends for being inserted into the Wall in the usual manner. The outer edge is provided with a raised ange, a', around it, against which thc frame B of the grate lits on the inside. This grate-frame and outer frame have a central thickened portion, shown, respectively, by a and b, both perforated for a pin or bolt, H. The grate-bars b are iiush with the frame on the outer face, leaving a recess for the reception of the sash c. The sash is shown centrally divided andV fitted to receive two lights of glass. The perforated lugs D on the sash c are cast so as to t into a slot or between two lugs, E, in the frame of the grate B, so arranged that, when in place, a single rod, F, will form the pivot or hinge of both the grate and the sash in the outer frame, as shown by Figs. l and 2. Thus the sash with its glass can be thrown open, to admit ventilation through the grate-bars, or both can be jointly opened to allow a free space through the outer frame to put in wood or the like. The sash being a little lower than the grateframe, a pin, H, inserted, will lock them all firmly together, and the window cannot then be opened from the outside.

I am aware that, separately considered, there may be no novelty iu the devices, as frames with hinged grates are common, also sash, separately set in, (usually wooden, howeverg) hence, I do not claim a sash, when simply fitted into a cellar-window, provided with a grate, whether hinged or not; but I am not aware thata combination of a hinged grate and window-sash with a castiron frame, substantially as shown, arranged, and described, was

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

In combination with a metallic frame, A, and hinged window-sash c, the independently hinged grate-bars b, and frame B, the whole constructed and operated substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
