Description

W.II'ETLEY.'
F nlding Seats and Tablets. No.155,901. Patented 0ct.13,1874.
WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE \VILLIAM TETLEY, OF IANA, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN FOLDING SEATS AND TABLES.
Specification formingpart of Letters Patent No. 155,901, dated October 13 1s74; application filed 7 May 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM TETLEY, of Pana, Christian county, Illinois, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Seats and Tables, of which the following is a specification: A
My invention consists of folding seats and tables, contrived to fold into recesses in the floor of a building flush with the surface, the object being to provide public and other halls,
.market and other buildings, with seats and tables that can be more readily disposed of when it is desired to clear the floor of them than by carrying them away, and to dispose of them, when cleared away, in space not available for other purposes.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a seat and section of a floor representing my invention in one mode of carrying it out, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section of Fig. 1 on the line 0? or.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A is the recess in the floor, which will be under the seat or table when set up for use, and therefore not objectionable when open, so far as the use of the floor is concerned. B is a cover to the recess when folded down it also serves as a part of the support for the table 0r seat when up, the table top or the seat 0 being hinged to it. D represents the legs, which are hinged to the table or seat 0, so as to fold under it when folded into the recess. E is the back to the seat, which is hinged to the seat and the cover so as to fold down on the seat, and it is arranged, together with the cover, to be braced by it at F when set upon for use. To this end the edge of the cover is preferably grooved or cut away, thus forming a support for said back, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of a seat or table, having folding legs, and a hinged plate, B, forming the cover of a recess, A, for reception of said seat or table, as shown and described.
2. The combination of the hinged cover B, cut away on its upper edge, the hinged back E, and seat 0, said cover supporting the back when the latter is elevated, as shown and described.
VILLIAM TETLEY.
