B. KUMAGAI PD HOLDER AND PENCIL SHARPENBR Find June 23. 1924 Patented ct. 27, 1925.
UNITED STATES4 BUNTARO KUMAGAI, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
PAD HOLDER AND PENCIL SHARPEN ER.
7 10 all iii/tom. t 11mg/ concern Be it known that I, BUNTARO KUMAGAI, a subject of the Emperor of Japan, a resident of Los Ang-cles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Pad IIolder am .Pencil Sharpener, of which the following is a spccilication.
rihis invention relates to adevice com prising the combination of a memorandum pad holder and a pencil sharpener, and pertains more particularly to that class of devices disclosed in Patent 1,184,247, granted to me May 20, 1916, and yPatent 1,296,971, granted to me March 11, 1919.
'Ihe primary object of this invention is Lto provide a combined pad holder and Sharpener unit, wherein the Sharpener unit is detachably secured to the pad head so as to permit expeditious and ready removal, whereby the Sharpener may be more easily cleaned, the blades removed and replaced, as well as others like operations performed with facility. In addition to the broader objects of this invention, there are certain details of construction, whereby a simple, durable, and economical structure is obtained.
These objects together with other objects and corresponding accomplishments are ob tained by means of the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the' accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is a perspective view of the assembled structure, Fig. 2 is a section of a fragment ol' the structure as seen on the line of Fig. 1; liig. is a section of a fragment of the structure as seen on the line of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a section as seen on the line 1 11 of F ig. 8 showing a fragment of the structure.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the structurel shown includes a jacket A comprising a base and a cover foldably attached thereto, a pad head B and a pad C held in position by the jaws of the head. Detachably mounted in the head at one side thereof is the Sharpener unit D. Except for the details of the structure relating to the pencil sharpener unit and the means for mounting it between the jaws, the pad holder is of well known type.
The jacket A comprises a base 5 and a cover 6 foldably attached thereto by a fleX ible portion 7. The head B comprises an under jaw 8 secured to the pad and having Application filed June 23, 1924. Serial No. 721,745.
tecth9 formed thereon. Formed integral with the lower jaw 8 is anupstanding back section 10.. Pivoted to the back section is an upper jaw 11 which is secured thereto by a pintle 12. The forward end of the jaw is provided with teeth 13 opposed to teeth 9. Helical springs 14 yieldingly press jaw 11 toward jaw 8. The pad C is inserted by elevating jaw 11 and placing it between the jaws; the upper jaw is then released so as to permit the teeth on the jaws to engage the pad and hold the latter in position. The pencil Sharpe-ner unit comprises a body 15 having a conical bore 16. A recess 17 eX- tends along the base of the body and intersects the bore to form a slot. The body is extended at one side as indicated by 18 to form a ledge. Mounted in the recess is a knife blade 19 which may have a double edge and is secured in position by a machine screw 20 having a knurled head. The body has adjacent its nose a transverse notch 21 to receive a spring catch 22 which is secured to the jaw 8. A guide clip 23 is secured to the -j aw 8 and is disposed to engagethe ledge 18 and assists in holding the body in position.
To remove the Sharpener unit, jaw 11 is elevated and t-he body grasped by pressing upon the screw 20 in a lateral direction so as to slide the body and disengage the catch 22 from its notch. After disengagement, the Sharpener unit may be removedfrom the head. It may then be handled and manipu` lated as desired. To replace the Sharpener unit, it is slipped in position with its nose foremost and the ledge 18 engaged by the clip 23. Thel body is pushed inwardly until the catch 22 engages the'notch on the body, thereby holding the latter in position. In order to provide for discharge of the shavings from a pencil being sharpened, a slot 24 in the base of the jacket is provided in registration with the slot in the pencil Sharpener.
lVhat I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a pad holder head having opposing jaws for embracing a pad thereby providing a cavity therebetween, a spring catch mounted on said head in said cavity, and a pencil Sharpener unit having a notch for the receipt of the catch whereby to provide a connection for detachably holding said unit in the cavity of said head.
2. In a device of the character described,
the combination oi' a pad holder head ha'ving opposing jaws for embracing a pad thereby providing a cavity therebetween, a leaf spring secured to said head in the cavity and having a hook on the ree end, and a pencil Sharpener unit having a notch for `the receipt of said hook Whereby to provide a connection for detachably holding' said unit in the cavity of said head.
3. In' a device of the character described, the conibina'tioi'i' of a pad holder having opposing' jaws for einb'rac'ii'i'g a pad, thereby' providing a cavity therebetween, a leaf spring secu-red at one end to said head in the cavity and having a hook en the free end thereof, a lateral guide clip secured to said head in said cavity, and a pencil Sharpener unit having a nose with a notch in the ridge thereof for the receipt of said hook whereby to provide a connection for detachably holding said unit in the cavity of said head.
In Witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my nanie this 16th day of June, 1924.
BUNIARO KUMAGAI.
