Be it known that I, ALFRED LINsDAr Foas'rnn. a British subject. residing at Glass lWorks, Smethwiclt, in the county of Stafford, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Valves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to valves of the kind comprising a flap which is movable about a central transverse axis, such as the reversing valves used in regenerative furnaces. Then such valves are exposed to hot gases, the valves and their seatings are often distorted by the heat, with the result that the valves no longer makel proper con tact with their seatings and leakage occurs.
The objects of the present invention are to counteract the effect of distortion, and to enable distortion of the valves to be minimized or obviated.
The invention comprises the mounting of a valve on an axis having a sutlicient degree of lateral freedom to allow the valve to accommodate itself to its seating.
The invention also comprises the arrangenient of the valve and seat-ings so that the contacting parts are protected from the hot furnace gases, and the provision for cooling of the exterior of the valve case as hereinafter described.
In the three accompanying sheets of explanatory drawings Figure l is a side elevation, Figure 2 a sectional side elevation and Figure 3 a part sectional plan of a furnace reversing valve constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figures 4 and 5 are side elevation and part sectional plans of an alternative construction.
In the application of the invention to a reversing valve of the pivoted flap type, the ends of the pivot spindle a are free to slide to a limited extent in slots in the valve case the slots being enclosed by suitable covers. If desired the ends of the valve spindle may be carried on bearing blocks movable in the aforesaid slots.
In the usual reversing type of valve the casing comprises two pairs of branches or pipe connections, one pair c being disposed vertically the other pair al horizontally all originating from one centre in the same plane and each suitably connected to its appropriate flue.
In carrying my invention into eifect as shown in Figures l-3 the valve or iiap e occupies alternately one or other of two oblique or diagonal positions in the chamber formed by the vertical branches 0.
In this example the slots f in the valvecase are arranged horizontally and the operating lever g on one of the ends of the spindle is arranged at an angle of 90 to the plane of the valve-flap its free end being connected to a vertical connecting rod or link 7L. This arrangement involves the least liability of the valve spindle being pulled over sideways while the valve is being moved. The lever is shown broken away at one end to avoid confusion with the illustration of the adjacent spindle end and the slot in the case through which the said end passes. To the spindle is secured a slidable cover plate z' which is held in position by a cap '7'. The latter is also formed with a slot l? similar to that in the case.
`warping or like distortion of the valve or distortion of the seating surfaces is accommodated in a valve as above described by relative movement of the bearing blocks in the casing slots. Consequently effective operation of the valves is maintained automatically.
I preferably arrange the valve so that the fiap shall operate in the chamber formed by the horizontal branches 0l as shown in Figures 4 and 5.
In this arrangement the effects of heat are more easily distributed than in the other, and in consequence the portions of the Hap which are ordinarily burnt are better able to resist the action of the hot gases. The slots in the casing through which pass the ends of the spindle a are arranged vertically, and two systems of levers are employed in conjunction with the valve spindle, one for balancing the valve and the other for actuating it. The balancing levers Z are pivoted at opposite sides of tllie case. Each is connected at one end to the valve spindle, is provided with a counterweight fm, at the other, and has its fulcrum n at an intermediate position near the valve spindle. A. lever g secured to one end of the valve spindle is connected by a link o or links to an operating lever p having its ulcrum coaxial with the adjacent cotinterbalancing lever. The lever j) is actuated by a rod or Linl; 7L. In other particulars the construction is siinilar to that tirst described.
A further advantage of arranging the valve seats in the horizontal portion of the internal passages of the case is that the seatings are readil7 accessible, and the condition of the valve can easily be inspected through covers l,
