UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. commw, or new YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES U. BAY, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPOOL.
Application filed May 9,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. CONANT, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bobbins or spools used for winding and holding adhesive tape or other flexible material.
Adhesive tape is made in several standard sizes and is generally wound upon spools. By means of my invention the manufacturer is enabled to wind an assortment of tapes upon a single spool and to market an article convenient for doctors or other persons requiring tapes of various widths.
One object of the invention is to provide a spool for carrying a plurality of rolls of material in separated condition.
Another object is to provide a spool upon which a plurality of rolls of material may be wound without danger of interwinding the adjacent coils.
A further object is to provide a spool with adjustable partitions whereby several rolls of material of the same or of different widths may be wound and carried upon a single spool.
WVhile the spool is intended primarily for holding and carrying adhesive tapes of various widths, it is to be understood that I do not limit the invention with respect to that particular use, as I am aware that my improved spool may be employed for winding other flexible materials.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating one embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a spool with a plurality of rolls of material of different widths wound thereon;
Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the spool; and,
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, it will be seen that my improved spool comprises the usual tubular core or stem 1 having a fixed disk or head 2 at each end, the said parts 1924. Serial No. 711,946.
being preferably, though not necessarily, made of metal.
In using the spool, the disks 8 are spaced apart from each other, and from the heads, distances substantially corresponding to the widths of the tapes or materials t that are intended to be wound upon the spool, and the said material is then wound upon the spool in the usual manner. During the winding operation the disks 3 serve as guides to assure formation of rollshaving flat ends, and, furthermore, where a plurality of rolls are wound simultaneously the said disks prevent interwinding of the coils of the laterally adjacent rolls.
It will be observed that my invention provides means whereby a plurality of rolls of material of the same or of different widths may be wound upon a single spool in such manner that each roll is completely separated from the adjacent ones.
Various modifications in the details of the structure herein described may be made without departing from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
What I claim is:
A spool of the character described comprising a stem having a head at each end, and a partition member mounted upon and freely slidable lengthwise of the stem but with suficient frictional engagement to hold the partition member in adjusted position against casual movement.
WILLIAM H. CONANT.
