CHARLES W. R. EICHHOFF, OF SPARK, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO OIL PRODUCTS APPLIANCE (10., 0B HAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
' warEBrnooE Jom'r BETWEEN TANKS AND EXTERNAL ASSOCIATED OBJECTS.
Application filed Januar y 31, 1923. .Serial No. 616,110.
To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. R. E1011 HOFF, 'a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oak Park, Cook County, Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Waterproof Joints Between Tanks and External Associated Objects, of Which the following is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to water proof joints between tanks and external associated objects, such as pump bodies, covers, lids and so forth, and its principal object is to provide a simple,'efiicient and easily assembled joint between an exterior element and voir, which shall beiproof against the entrance of rain, snow or water and so forth.
Another object is to provide a joint inwhioh bolt, risret, or screw holes are dlspensed with, danger of leakage at such places is who ly eliminated. .The invention consists in the several novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan, partly broken away, .of a pum base and tank top, illustrating one embodiment of the present invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical, longitudinal section taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig 3 -is a vertical, cross section taken on the line 33 of. Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a central, vertical section showing the application of the invention to a cover.
Referring to said drawing and first to F i s. 1 to 3 inclusive, which illustrate one em odiment of the invention, the reference character 5 designates the top of a tank or reservoir such as is commonly used to contain oil or othercliquids, and 6 designates an external member, here shown as comprising the base of'a pump, which is mounted on the tank and us d for withdrawing the contents thereof; Said base is formed with the usual chamber 7 which opens downwardly into the oil u wardly into the discharge opening from which leads the pump standard 9. The construction of the pum is immaterial to this invention and no urther description of its construction is necessary so far as this specification is concerned.
The top 5 of the tank is formed with an opening 10 for the receptlon of the pump 14 are employe ump cylinder 8, andformed with a downwardly turned mar ginal flange 13 which fits over and around the upstanding flange of thetank, and rests on the tank. The flanges 11, 13 are comparatively high and because of the overlapping feature, they efi'ectively prevent rain, snow, sleet and the like from entering the tank through the opening 10.
The tank-and base are secured together against disconnection by the spot welding process if desired, to make the connection permanent, or they may berigidlgy secured together by clam bars 14 and means for clamping the tan top and pump base together. As a preference, two clamp bars one located adjacent each end of the base, and extending transversely thereof. Each clamp bar has a central boss 16 and two arms 17 that extend from the boss to the underside of the joint between the tank and bear a ainst the underside of the tank top. .The ase is formed on its underside with two bosses 18 which are tapped to receive screws 15 which extend through the bosses 16 of the clamp bars. The arms 17 of said clamp bars incline upwardly from the bosses and some s ace is left between the bosses 16, 18 where y the ends of the clamp bars may press the tank to against the underside of the base flange wlien the screws 15 are screwed up tight. Usually, a filler hole, covered by a cover, is located in the tank top, which hole permits access to the screws in the assembling the base with the tank.
In the form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 4, a cover or lid 19 is shown, which covers an opening 10 in the top 5 of a tank. The cover has a down turned flange 13 which surrounds the up turned flange 11 .of the tank. The cover is hinged on a the passage of the drippings and is formed with a gauge supporting lug 26 in which may be placed the usual gauge stick.
More or less variation of the exact details of construction is possible without departing from the spirit of this invention; 1 desire, therefore, not to limit myself to the exact form of the construction shown and described, but intend, in the following claims, to point out all of th invention disclosed herein.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A water proof joint between atank and an associated external member, comprising a tank top having an opening therein, and a flange bent upwardly around said opening, an associated external member having an outlet and formed with a marginal down turned flange overlapping said up turned flange and resting upon the outer face of the tank top,and clamp bars secured meaaee member, whereby the top and bottom faces of the sheet metal tank top are clamped between said down-turned flange of the external member and the clamp bars.
2. A water proof joint between a tank and a pump base, comprising a sheet metal tank top having an opening therein and a flange bent upwardly around said opening, a pump base having a down turned flange overlapping said up turned flange and resting upon the outer face of the tank top, and clamp bars secured to the underside of the pump base and bearing against the under side of the tank top directly under the flange of said pump base, whereby the top and bottom faces of the sheet metal tank top are clamped between said down-turned flange of the pump base and the clamp bars.
CHARLES W. R. EICHHOFF.
