UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. JACOBS, O'F CHICAGO,A ILLINOIS, ASSIGrNOB.` OF ONE-HALF TO CLAES J. JOHNSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-SASH HOLDER.
Application filed November 9, 1922. Serial No. 599,771.
To all whom t may concern.' y
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and Statey of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Vindow-Sash Holder,of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a means for yieldably4 holding window sashes and the like against movement inthe frames provided therefor.
The object of the invention generally stated is to provide a means of this general character which is capable of holding the sash at all times in snug fitting engagement with the frame, taking up any looseness which may exist between the sash and the frame to prevent it from rattling and pounding, to hold it at any desired elevation, to insure a weather-tight contact between the sash and the frame, and to prevent it from binding and sticking in the frame.
A more specic object of the invention is to provide a holding device of extremely simple and inexpensive construction as well as effectual in accomplishing the objects above set forth. Y
In the accompanying drawings I have shown two embodiments of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a face view of a frame such as is employed in automobiles having a sash slidable therein and equipped with a holding device constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a verticalsectional view on an enlarged scale through a portion of the frame and sho-wing one edge of the sash in elevation with my improved holding means applied thereto. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing another form of holding means. Fig. 4: is a fragmentary transverse sectional view showing the sash in position within the groove of a frame member.
Referring irst to Fig. 1, 7 designates generally a window frame for an automobile or other vehicle, in which is vertically slidable a window sash 8. The frame 7 may be of any suitable construction. It is shown as comprising opposite side frame members 9 having formed in their inner edges grooves 10 constituting slideways for the opposite side edges of the sash v8.
The sash 8 may also be of any suitable construction embodying side frame members or stiles 11 slidable in the groove 10 as aforesaid. The lower portion of the frame 7 may be constructed with opposed side walls 12 to form a pocket for receiving the sash whenl lowered. This pocket is normally closed by a hinged plate 13 lin a well known manner. The sashhas a suitable handle 14, 60.
and the inner side wall of the pocket 12 is shown as provided with a notch 15 in its Aupper portion toreceive the handle 14 when the sash `is enclosed within the pocket.
Referring now to Figs. 2.and 3, the holding means which I have provided comprises a bowed member 16 or 16 which may be formed of spring steel or other suitable material, and preferably is formed of round wire stock. The opposite ends of the meinber are anchoredin the edge of the sash and for this purpose are provided with anchoring studs preferably in the form of integral inturned end portions or stems`17 or 17 suitable apertures being provided in the edges of the frame members 11 to receive such stems. The members may be of any suitable shape adaptedto enter within the grooves 10 with the bowed portions thereof normally extending beyond one faceof the In the construction shown in Fig. 2 I em- S5 ploy two holding members at each edge of the sash near they upper and lower ends thereof; and each of said members comprises an intermediate Jor bowedportion 18 having at one end a shank 19 which carries an in- 90 turned stem 17, and at its opposite end a reversely bent arm 2O also carrying an inturned anchoring stem 17. The upper and lower members are preferably reversely arranged,
but the arrangement is such that the bowed portion 18 of each member normally project-s beyond one face of the sash and preferably the inner face, as shown in the upper portion of Fig. 2. Thus when the sash is slid into the grooves, the members are forced inwardly against the spring action effected between the bowed portion 18 and the arm 20. The result is, as will be apparent from Figs. 2 and 4., the outer face of the sash is held snugly against the outer wall of the groove 10.
The form of holding means shown in Fig. 3 comprises a single'member embodying two bowed portions 18 ncar the opposite ends thereof connected by an approxi- .110
mately straight intermediate l:portion 19 and having at their oppositey ends inturned stems 17 which are anchored in theY side frame members 11o-f the sash.- *In .this
instance it will be seen the holding means.
comprises a pair of bowed portions connected together so as normally to `cause the bowed portions to project beyond the face of the frame. In the construction shown in Figf, on lthe other hand, instead of 4connecting .ithe members together, the resiliency 'is (jbtfainedbythe provision of thearms 20 ybetween-` ,thebowed'pontions and the "anchor- ,means vserves effectually to take upy any looseness' or play existing between theedg'es of the sash 'and `tlieframe, thus preventingr the sash from binding andsticling in the slideways ywhiley holding it at 4'any desired elevation. 'It also' serves-'to hold one face of tlie sasli'snugl'yfagainst' one side wallgof the grooves' provided therefor, thusinsuring a close weet ver-tight' Vcontact between r `the sash and the 'trame to prevent j leakage i i. l Y 'I .,n f of air around the sash, and eliminating eff feetually`r any rattling, pon nding or other objectional noises.` The device maybe ,con-
structed verycheaply andfapplied quickly andV easily and witliont the exercise o'any especial skill;1
Obviously the application of 'the invention is not'limilted'tp thelautornobile yindustry forfit will be apparent thatit may be used to advantage in a great many instances whether it be wupon windows, screens, v'doors or similar closures,
I claim as iny invention:
1. A holding device for window sashes and the like adapted to 'be secured upon the outer edgeof the sash stile and bent from a piece of wire stock to 'forni between its ends abowed portion and a connecting portion vconstructed to permit the bowed iporltion toyield under pressure exerted from one side of the sash while the ends oi' the device'are pivotally but non-slidably secured to the outer edge of the stile.
2. The combination with a frame having grooves and a` saslislidable in said grooves, o holding means for the sash including a device bent from a single piece of spring. wire to -form an'interinediate portion', and Vfastening l devices fat opposite ends vof 'the device' extending in a"direction perpendicular' to theI intermediate portionv and adapted to b e embedded inthe edge of the sash rz tjdjacent 'the bottom of 'the .groove in which it operatesfand to hold the inter- Vmediatev portion yieldably -against one kside Wall of the groove.
i3.-'-A"'l i olding means for window sashes and :thev'like comprising a spring'mcmber "having' atits extreme ends perpendicularly disposed anchoring stems and a bowed portion 'between the ends of the member normally projecting 'beyond 'one' tace of the sash" when such ends are `anchored in the edge ofthe sash'.
f 4." he combination with a "frame 'member "having agroove therein and a sash, one
edge of which is `slidable in said groove,"of a device carried by said 'edge'of the sash within the fgroove and adapted to V'exert pressure 'on 'one side wall thereof whereby "to`*hold the ysash frictional'ly against the opposite side wall of the groove, said device edde'd in `the sash with the bowed portion normally extending beyond the plane of one side rWallf of the Sash- K v`In testimony whereof, 'I' have hereunto aixed my signature.
GEORGE A. JACOBS.
