G. L. OHMART A 'GARAGE DOOR HOLDER Filed March 20, 1924 Patented Sept. 8, 1925.
UNITED 'STATES GnAYsToN'L. OHMART, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
AGremien-noen Hennen.
Application filed March 20, 1'924. Serial No. 700,683..
T0 all whom t may cot'zccvn.:
Be it known that I, GRAYSTON L. OHMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Garage-Door,
Holder, of which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention relates to a garage door holder and has for its principal object to provide simple and efficient means for holding a garage door of the swinging type in an open posit-ion while an automobile is being backed into the garage. Considerable damage has been caused to automobiles while running them into garages because of the wind closing the door4 and colliding with the automobile. The present invention eliminates this danger.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a device of this nature which may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost, easily installed, reliable in operation, and well adapted to the purpose for which it is designed.
Vith the above and numerous other objects in view as will appear as the description progresses, the invention resides in certain novel features of construction, and in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a fragmentary rear elevation of a door and frame therefor showing my invention applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a top plan thereof showing the door in an open position, and
Figure 3 is a detail section through the catch.
Referring to the drawing in detail it will be seen that 1 designates a door frame to which is hinged the door 2 as at 3. My device consists of a pair of rods 4 and 5. The rod 4 is pivoted at one end to the upper portion of the frame 1 as at 6 and at its other end to one end of the rod 5. The other end of the rod 5 is pivoted to an intermediate portion of the door 2 as at-7. It is to be noted that the rod 5 is bent inter-` mediate its ends so as to provide two diverging portions so that when the door is in an open position as shown in Figure 2 one portion thereof will extend parallel with the door and the other portion angularly therefrom. A catch indicated generally at 8 k,is mounted on the door and adapted to engage the portion of the rod 5 which is adjacent the pivot point 7. This catch 8 includes a U-shaped body portion 9 including an upper leg 10 and a lower le 11 both of which are apertured as at 12 an 13. A plate 14 provided with an aperture is fixed to the body 9 intermediate its ends and adjacent the upper leg 10. A bolt 17 is projected through, the aperture 13 of leg 11 and the aperture of the plate 14 terminating above. the plate 14 in a beveled surface. A pin 18 is mounted. through the bolt 17 adjacent the plate 14 and a spring 19 is disposed about the bolt 17 and normally holds the beveled face of the bolt projected through the aperture of plate 14. A chain 20 is connected to the bottom end of the bolt 17 so that the same may be pulled downwardly thereby compressing the spring which will return the bolt after the chain is released. The portion of the rod 5 adjacent pivot 7 moves between the leg 10 and plate 14 and in so moving will depress the bolt 17 and move beyond the aperture 12 and allo-w the bolt to spring back in position thereby locking this rod and preventing movement of the door 2 as will be clearly understood.
I have, in the present instance, shown and described the preferred embodiment and use of my invention which will give in practice .satisfactory and reliable results, and it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new is 1. In combination, a door frame, a door hinged to the frame, a rod pivoted to the frame, a second rod p-ivoted to the door, said second rod being bent intermediate its ends to provide two straight portions diverging from each other, said rods being pivoted to each o-ther, and a catch on the door for engaging the second rod in the manner and for the purpose specified.
2. In., combination, a frame, a door hinged to the'frame, and means for` holding the door in an open position, said means including a pair of rods pivoted to each other, one of said rods pivoted to the frame, the other rod being pivoted to the door and formed in two sections angularly disposed llO in relation to each other, the section adjacent the door adapted to lie parallel therewith when the door is in an open position, and a catch on the doo-r for engagingy said last mentioned section of the rod.
3. In combination, a frame, a door hinged to the frame, and means for holding the door in an open position, said means including a pair of rods pivoted to each other,
one of said rods pivoted to the frame, the
kother rod being pivoted to the door and lformed in twoseetons angularly disposed in relation to eaeh other, the section adjacent the door adapted to lie parallel therewith when the door is in an open position, and a catch on the door for engaging said last mentioned sect-ion of the rod, said catch including a body and aspring bolt, means for actuating the spring bolt so as to release the section of the rod engaged thereby.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
GRAYSTON L.- OHMART.
