Be it known that I, SPURGEON GAGE, a
citizen of the United States, residing at.
Mount Hermon, in the county of Franklin and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiator Air Valves, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to valves, particularly those used in connection with steam radiators for the purpose of permitting escape of air therefrom, and has for its object the provision of a valve having an extension which projects into the radiator beyond the inner wall thereof so as to permit the exhaust of air from the radiator while preventing water of condensation from being blown out with the air and falling upon the floor as is an ordinary occurrence with the ordinary type of valve.
An important and more specific object is the provision of a valve of this character in which the extension is concaved so that water of condensation running down the radiator wall will travel along the extension to the center of the concaved portion and drop off instead of ever reaching the end and mixing with the air.
An additional object is to provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive to make, positive in action, eflicient and durable in service, and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and ad vantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
The figure is a longitudinal section through the valve showing it extending through the wall of a fragment of a radiator.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the letter A designates a portion of the wall of an ordinary radiator such as is used in dwelling houses or, in fact, any other buildings having steam heating plants. The valve indicated at B may itself be of any ordinary or preferred construction though in the present instance it is represented as comprisin a casing 10 having a stem 11 screwed through the wall A formed with a bore 12 leading to a valve seat 13 normally engaged by the conical end 14: of a valve 15 screwed through the outer portion of the casing and equipped with a knob or handle 16. This type of valve is old and well known and no claim is made for the construction thereof. It should also be understood that the particular type shown is for purposes of illustration only, as any other type of valve might be used instead.
The essence of the invention lies in the provision of an extension 17 on the thread ed portion 11 of the valve, which extension projects considerably into the radiator or beyond the inner face of the wall A thereof, the bore 12 passing, of course, through this extension. The periphery of the extension 17 is provided therearound with a continuous groove or channel 18 having its base wall at all points concaved in a direction lengthwise of the extension 17 with the central low portion of the groove or channel relatively deep, said groove or chan' nel extending to the outer or free end of the extension 1.7 and to the wall A when the valve is applied.
In the use of the device it is apparent that the drops of water C formed by condensation of steam on the radiator wall will fall upon the extenson 17 and drop off without ever reaching the end of the extension, the concaved' or channeled shape of the exten sion positively preventing the water from reaching the end. Obviously, the Water cannot mix with and be blown out with the air passing through the passage or bore 12 when the valve is opened and in this way it is evident that spilling of the water on the floor or surrounding objects in a building will be avoided.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention and have illustrated a specific type of valve and a certain shape and size for the extension, it should be understood that I reserve the right to make many changes and variations in the details provided such modifications will constitute no departure from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
