UNITED STATES.
1,552,092 PATENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR. C. THOMAS, OF BUTTE, MONTANA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 CYRUS G.
' BERRY, OF BUTTE, MONTANA.
saw sn'r an]: GAUGE.
Application filed May 27, 1924. Serial No. 716,215.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. THoMAs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Butte, in the county of Silver Bow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Saw Set and Gauge, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in saw-sets and has for its principal object to provide a simple and efficient device for setting the teeth of crosscut saws, rip-saws, circular saws, etc., and gauging the set thereof.
Another important object of the invention is to provide a saw-set of the above-mentioned character, which is of such a construction as to enable the sawyer to adjust the setting of the teeth.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a saw-set and gauge of the above-mentioned character, which may be readily and easily placed in use for setting the teeth of saw blades and will obviate the necessity of having to employ a number of tools in obtaining the necessary and desired result. 1
A still further object is to provide a sawset and gauge of the above-mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purposes for which 1t is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same: 7
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention showing the same in use for setting a tooth,
Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof, and
Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the same.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the substantially rectangular shaped body or block and the same is constructed of any suitable material preferably of malleable iron. One end of the body or block is reduced as shown at 2 and the end of the reduced portion provides an anvil. In order to render the anvil serviceable the face thereof is of tempered steel. At the upper edge of the anvil I provide the bevel face 3 which provides a means.
whereby the teeth of a saw blade A may be set in the manner hereinafter to be more fully described.
Depending from the body 1 adjacent the reduced portion 2 is the extension 4;. The lower free end thereof is provided with a threaded opening for receiving the threaded adjusting screw 5 and the latter is provided with a head 6 for actuating the same by the use of any suitable tool such. as a screw driver or awrench. A jam-nut 7 surrounds the screw or bolt 5 and is provided for the purpose of sustaining the screw in its proper adjusted position. The jam'nut is illustrated at 7 in the drawings.
Arranged in the opposite side of the intermediate portion of the extension 4 and extending transversely thereof are the dovetailed slots 8 and the same provide a means for receiving the inner ends of the legs 9 and 10 respectively. These legs are curved inwardly and have the outer ends thereof adapted to engage the flat face of the saw blade in the manner clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 3 of the drawings.
The legs are of such a construction and so associated with the extension as to enable the same to be readily replaced when they have become worn and inefiicient for the purposes of carrying out the objects for which the same are designated.
In use, the adjusting screw or bolt 5 is actuated to obtain the desired set and the tool is then placed in the position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing so that the teeth B of the saw blade A will be adapted for engagement with the inclined face 3 of the reduced end of the tool. It is to be understood that the body will be grasped by the sawyer in one hand and placed on one side of the saw blade in the manner shown in Fig. 1 while the sawyer holds the hammer in the other hand and strikes upon the tool which rests on the bevel face 3 so that the degree of set is obtained. .The angle or position of the saw against the body being regulated by the adjusting screw 5 in the manner above set forth. v
In determining the gauge of the set, a tool is moved upwardly on the saw blade so that the lower edge of the bevel face 3 will engage the edge of the'saw teeth and by moving the tool backward andiforward along the saw blade the sawyer may readily. iascertainiwhether or notv the saw teeth. are
5 in proper alignment with each other It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a saw-set and gauge hasbeen provided which is very simple in construction, and easily andreadilyi placed in an operative position. Furthermore the tool is strong and durable and will withstand the force of the hammer when the same is 'used in the setting ofthe-saw teeth,
A- device of this character may be manufa'ctured at a very low cost and will obviate the necessityof having to carry in a sawyers outfit a number of tools-which are ordinarily used in thesetting and'gauging of saw teeth. 5
While I have shown the preferred-embodiment ofmy invention, it is to -be understood 7 that various changes-in the size, shape and arrangementof partsmay be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the il invention and the scope of theappended claims. 7 7
Having thus described the invention, what I claim is z 2. A saw-set including a body having one end a beveled surface andprov-ided at its side with an angularlyv disposed eaten-- sion,the-opp0site sides of said extension being provided with transversely extending grooves, blades having ends mounted in said grooves and curved so as to terminate in ends spaced from each other for a distance greater than the transverse thickness: of the bod i ascrew threadedu on the extension 7 3 and means iorlocking thescrevvwith relationto the extension.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature.
