UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY L. NORTON, OF- MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENINGS.
Specilication forming part of Letters Patent No. 155,166, dated September 22, 1874; application filed July 28, 1874.
OAsE D.
To all whom -it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. NORTON, of Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Door and Blind Back-Catches; and I do hereby de- Clare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention consists, mainly, in the combination of a txed standard, properly secured to the building at a suitable point, with a pivoted spring catch-piece for holding the door or blind open, and a spring pusher-bar for disengaging the blind or door, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l represents a perspective view of my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 sectional elevations ofthe same. Figs. 4 and 5 represent views of modified forms.
To enableothers skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents a standard or horizontal arm, adapted to be attached, by means of a proper face-plate, a, to any suitable point upon the building. It is provided with the horizontal pivot-opening a1,tl1e recess a2, and the vertical stud a3, as shown. B represents a catchpiece, consisting of a suitable metal block, having a proper thumb-pin, b, and catch-recess bl, an upper recess, b2, studs b3 b4, and lower main recess b5, having a circulan depression, bs, as shown. 117 represents pivotholes, by means of which and a proper pivotpin this part B is pivoted to part A, as shown. C represents a coiled spring, one end of which is held by the stud a3 upon the part A, and the other by the circular depression 116 in part B. D represents a pusher plate or bar, adapted to rest in one end of the upper recess of the part B, adapted to receive it, and provided with a central slot, through which projects the stud b4. d represents a coiled spring, resting also in the upper recess, and adapted to bear against the inner end of the pusher-plate D, as shown. d' represents a covering-plate, by means of which the parts are secured in place, it being itself secured by riveting down the ends of the studs b3 b4. The blind or door is provided at the proper point with a suitable catch plate and recess, as shown at x in Figs. 2 and 3.
The operation is as follows: When the blind or door is pushed back, the lower edge of its catch-plate strikes upon the inclined surface of the thumb-piece, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and depresses the same, the thumb-piece turning freely upon its pivot, until the catch-recess is entered by the edge of the catch-plate, when the catch-piece rises vertically through the action of its vertical spring, and securely holds the blind in place. The pusher-bar, which projects over the recess when free to act, yields readily when the blind is pushed back to permit the catch-plate to enter the recess.
Vhen it is desired to release the door or blind, the thumb-piece is depressed until the outer side of the catch-recess, against which the catch-plate bears, is disengaged from the latter, when the blind will be thrown forward by the action ofthe pusher-bar, which is now free to act.
The catch-piece B may be made of any suitable length, and be arranged to operate at any proper angle.w When made of extended length, I preferably provide its base with/ears "o o, to give it a rm bearing, and prevent it from moving sidewise; and, when set at an angle, I provide it with brace-bars, as shown in Fig. 5, to give it proper stability and firmness.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with a fixed standard or horizontal arm, A, the spring C and the vertically-moving catch-piece B, having a horizontally-moving pusher-bar, D, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specication signed and witnessed this 22d day of July, 1874.
HENRY L. NORTON.
