REVERSIBLE SPLICE BAR FOR RAIL JOINTS.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. NEAFIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mountain Lakes, in the county of Morris and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reversible Splice Bars for Rail Joints, of which the following isa specification.
This invention relates to the subject of rail joints, and more particularly to a construction of splice bar wherein a perfectly balanced distribution of metal is maintained, and provision madefor obtaining maximum wear from the bar.
To that end the invention contemplates a splice bar of a truly symmetrical form, and so designed, that it possesses the capacity of reversibility in four ways thus obtaining a prolonged life and wear from the bar, also effecting substantial economy in track maintenance because of the several positions in which the bar can be used to present unworn bearing surfaces when certain of the bearing surfaces have been worn sufliciently to be unsuitable for engagement with the head and base flange of the rail.
With these and other objects in view which will be readily apparent to those familiar with track conditions and track maintenance the invention consists in the novel splice bar construction illustrated and described and claimed.
The drawings here resent a practical embodiment of the inven ion and in these drawings- Figure 1 is a sectional view showing the improved reversible splice bar applied in operative relation to a rail within the fishing space thereof.

lower reinforcing ribs 7 at the same side of the bar is formed in the bar a bolting channel or recess 8 adapted to receive therein a hearing or equivalent washer 9 for the nut 10 of the bolt 11, and as shown, the major diameter of the nut is longer than the adjacent side wall 3 of the web thus involving a structure wherein the ribs 7 are disposed sufficiently near the bolt holes as to greatly improve the section modulus of the bar above and below the horizontal neutral axis.
By reason of the fact that the splice bar is of exactly similar construction upon both sides of its vertical central longitudinal axis, it is truly symmetrical and is reversible in four ways so that anyof the four similar bearing faces 5 may be presented for engagement with either the under side of the head of the rail or with the upper side of the base flange of the rail, thus obtaining greatly prolonged life of the splice bar, and permitting the track to be maintained at the joints with the greatest economy.
It will further be observed that by reason of the truly symmetrical form of the construction the modulus of the top and bottom portions of the bar-are the same as well as the modulus of the bar respectively above and below the horizontal neutral axis. This provides a perfectly balanced bar and one in which a substantial head I strength can be maintained.
From the foregoing it is thought that the invention will now readily be understood, and also that minor changes may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
