UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE BRANDES, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT. IN BEER-COOLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,979, dated September 15, I814; application filed June 24, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE BRANDES, of Cleveland, in the county of (Juyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented an Improved Swimming Beer-Cooler, of which the follow ing is a specification:
This invention has for its object the cooling of beer in the vats by means of a floating or swimming bowl containing ice. It consists of a sheet-metal bowl having a short upright flange, attached to the upper edge of which,
on the outside, is a hollow ring, forming an air-chamber, which insures the floating of the bowl.
Heretofore these swimmers have been made conical in form, and to keep them in an upright position water has been placed in them and the ice floated in the water; but this has proved to be quite expensive, rapidly consuming the ice, and not so good a radiator of the cold. My improved swimmers require no water, and by their form make a better radiation of the cold.
To enable others to fully understand my improvement, I will proceed to describe the same in detail by the aid of the accompanying drawing, in which Figure I is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, of my swimmer.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents a half-spherical sheet-metal bowl, having an offset side, B, rising a short distance above the top edge; and to the outside edge of the side B is attached a hollow ring, 0, soldered close, and air-tight, and containing air, thus forming an air-chamber at the top edge of the bowl, which prevents the bowl from sinking when filled almost full to the brim with ice or ice and Water.
This swimmer, floating about in the beer, rapidly cools the same by the downward radiation of cold from its bottom.
I am aware that it is not new to make swimmin g beer-coolers of sheet metal strengthened with Wire ribs, 850.
Having described my invention, I claim-- A beer-cooler, substantially such as herein described, provided with a hollow ring or airchamber for the purpose of increasing its buoyancy, as set forth.
GEORGE BRANDES.
