Be it known that l, ELnnn'r S. FPooL, a citizen ol the `United States, residing at Hattiesburg, in the county of Forrest and State of Mississippi, have invented new and useful improvements in Stoves, ot which the following is a speciiication.
The present invention has reference to knock-down or collapsible bodies in which the parts constituting the same may be set up in an easy manner to produce a strong and eiiicient structure, and wherein said parts may be easily separated and readily handled to arrange one on the other to produce a small compact package for shipment or for storage.
The improvement is particularly directed to heating apparat-us, such as stoves or builtout heaters for open grates or tire places, and in carrying outl the invention it is my purpose to produce such devices in which the parts thereof can be associated in an easier and more expeditious n'iauner without the employment ot bolts, rivets or analogous securing means.
lt is also my purpose to produce a knochdown structure in which every element constituting the same is provided upon its confronting and abutting surfaces with integral means designed tor inter-engagement in a manner which will hold all ot the parts together in a strong and efficient manner without in any ways detracting from the appearance ot the structure.
It is a still ii'urther object to produce a heating apparatus in which a collapsible or knock-down body rests and .is secured on a. collapsible or knock-down base, one in which the draft damper is ot a particular construction and associated with the stove in a novel manner, one in which the tire 'door .is normallyllocked by means on the front or side oi the stove which cooperates with the door, one in which the hinged connection between the tire door and the stove is such as to sustain'tlie said door in horizontal position when opened, one in which the ash door comprises a removable element and has associated therewith the damper tor controlling the air currents beneath the Serial No. 504,856.

It is, or course, to be understood that the improvement is to be constructed in various sizes, shapes, etc., and that any desired material, suited tor the purpose, may be employed.
ln the construction illustrated in Figures 1 to 8, in particular, the base oi the heater comprises tour sections, which are in the nature of plates. The trent plate, indicated oy the numeral 1 has its ends hanged in the same direction, as indicated by the numeral 2, and the inner face ot the said plate, from the bottom thereof, and in a line with the lianges, but spaced therefrom, is integrally formed with lugs el, the upper ends ot' the lugs being reduced or cut away upon their inner aces to provide tongues d. rihe side plates 5 are provided at their upper Jfront corners with lugs 6 which are cut away at the bottoni to i'orm tongues 7. Similar lugs 8 having tongues 9 are provided on the side plates at their upper rear corners. r1`he outer edges of the lugs just mentioned are lush with the outer edges ot the corners of the side plates. rlhe back plate 12 is similar in construction to the front plate being provided with inwardly directed flanges 13 at each end, and having lugs 11 termed with tongues 10 near each end at the bottom of the plate.
To assemble the base the lower part ot the side plates 5 are placed inside ot the ilanges 2 and 13 0n the front and rear plates respectively, and the plates 5 are then slid downwardly in the space between the tlanges and the lugs of the front and rear plates. The tongues 7 on the lugs 6 will interengage with the tongues on the lugs d, and the tongues 9 on lugs 8 will interengage with the tongues 10 on the lugs 11. lt is thus apparent that the parts will be held together, and maintained in position, and that the only movement allowed by such arrangement is the upward movement of the side plates. rlhe side plates 5, at the center thereof have their upper edges notched, as at 141. rlhe bottom plate of the stove proper is oi a materially greater length and width than the supporting base therefor, the under face o'l the bottom plate 15 is straight or smooth throughout, and simply rests on the upper edge of the base, the rear edge ot the plate 15 being disposed in a line with the back of the base. rEhe bottom plate 15, upon its upper face is provided with slot 16 that is designed to align with the notches 111 in the sides 5 of the base, and inward of the slot there are integrally formed on the plate 15 ribs 17, the said ribs having thei ends engaging the ends ot the transverse rib 18 as shown in Figure 3 of the drawings and said ribs 18 are formed adjacent to the rear edge of the bottom plate 15. The front of the stove comprises a numberlof sections, the upper and outermost section being in the nature of a frame, and this section is indicated by the numeral 'llhe member 33 is open at its center from its bottom to a point adjacent to its upper edge approximately equalling the width of the sides 34 of the said frame or member 33. The sides, upon their inner faces are formed with vertically disposed flanges,
and inward of the flanges with parallel spaced lugs 35 which are reduced from their inner faces at their lower ends to provide tongues 36, and these tongues 36 are designed to coengage with the tongues 31 of the side plates 25, when the outer edges of the said side plates are received between the lugs 35 and the flanges 34. 1t will thus be seen that the frame member 33 is moved downwardly over the outer edges of the side plates, and when the tongues 31 and 36 are in interengagement, as just described, and the back is secured to the sides, the main body of the stove is set up in an easy but strong and eflicient manner. lWhen the front member or frame 33 is positioned, the outer face thereof is in contacting engagement with the inner ends of the outer and widened ribs 19 on the base or bottom plate 15 which more effectively sustains the body in its set up condition. it will, of course, be obvious that it is not necessary to elevate the baclr or the front frame 33 above the top edges of the 'sides in arranging the baclr and front on the sides, it being merely necessary to arrange the lugs on the said front and back between the lugs on the sides and then move the said front and back downwardly into engagement with the tongues on the lugs of the sides and to permit of the lower edges of the front and bach resting on the base. lft is to be also understood that the interior of the stove is suitably reinforced to prevent the buckling thereof from heat, and preferably the members constituting the body each comprise two thicknesses between which there is a body of non-heat conducting material, 'such as sheets of asbestos, but if desired, the inner faces of the body men'ibersmay be formed of single thicknesses and asbestos facings be secured thereon.

The top plate ot the stove is indicated by the numeral 752, and is of a considerably greater width and length than the body oi the stove. The top plate is provided with the usual flanged openings for the reception of the dish-like lids, and is also provided with a smoke pipe outlet 73. The stove pipe 73 may be integrally formed with the top, if desired, and when so formed is arranged at an angle so that other pipe sections may be attached the eto in a convenient manner and properly directed to the liuc opening in e chimney. When so disassociated each of the several parts of the stove may be easily handled and all ot the parts may be arranged one over the other to produce a small compact package for storage or shipment.
In the construction illustrated in Figure 9, and the remaining ligures of the drawings, the in'iprovement is ot a means to close an open grate or lire place 8l. The rear or back of the improvement comprises a substantially rectangular frame 82 of a size to fully cover the grate opening. The frame, upon the lower and closed portion thereof has on its outer face, adjacent to its ends spaced vertical flanges 83 respectively, an upper horizontal flange 8st and a lower horizontal flange 85, the last mentioned flange being disposed between the inner vertical flanges. lThe face 86, instead of constituting four members or plates, as previously described, comprises only three, the outer plate being secured to the side plates in a manner similar to that already described, and the side plates having on their inner and upper ends lugs provided with depending tongues 87 that are designed to engage with similar tongues 88 formed on the inner vertical flanges, the outer vertical flanges being in contacting engagement with the outer faces of the side members of the base. The bottom or base plate has its under face provided with longitudinal or transverse lugs or flanges 89 to receive therebetween the upper edges of the base plate, the inner end of the base or bottom 90 resting upon the referred to horizontal flange on the frame 82. The frame 84 is provided with vertically disposed outer and inner spaced flanges 91 and 92 respectively and at its upper end above the said flanges 91 and 92 with an outwardly projecting flange or enlargment 93. The base 90 is also provided with an inner pair of longitudinal ribs 94 and 95 respectively. The inner ribs 94 and 95 are, in this instance, formed with outwardly extending flanges 90 provided with spaced notches 97. rlhe side plates 98 of the body, at their lower edges are provided with inwardly entending ribs 99 provided with spaced notches 100, and the notches are designed to receive therethrough the tongues provided by the notches 97 in the flanges 96 of the ribs 95, and thereafter to be moved toward the rear frame to bring the notches out of alignment, and the outer faces of the side plates into` contacting engagement with the outer ribs 94, and the inner edge-s of the said plates between the vertical inner and outer flanges 92 on the back frame 82. The front is of a similar construction to that previously described, so that a detailed description thereof is not considered necessary, and also the top 101 is substantially similar to the top plate 72 and coengages with the front and sides in a manner similar to that previously described, the inner edge of the top, in the pre-sent instance, underlying the outwardly projecting flange or enlargement on the top of the frame 82. In a like manner, the removable front and basket portion of the grate are supported. The flue damper, in the present instance, regulates t-he passage between the grate, frame and flue against which the device is positioned, and one of the side plates is provided with an opening 101, the second side plate with ak notch 102 disposed directly opposite the opening, the notch being closed by the top plate 103. rfhrough the opening passes one end of the stem 101iL for the damper 105. Through the notch there is passed the opposite end of the stem, and the said last mentioned end is provided with a` handle portion 106. rllhe damper is in the nature of a flat plate, of a sufficient width to accomplish its purpose, and when the back plate is to be wholly opened to the fine, the handle is moved outwardly to bring one end of the damper against the side plate provided with the notch, the damper then being swung to a substantially horizontal position and moved longitudinally in an opposite direction to permit the end thereof resting on a lug 107 provided upon the inner face of the opposite side plate of the body. Varying forms and designs of interengaging means between the plates or elements constituting the improvement are illustrated in detail in Figures 12 to 15, but as the same coengage in a manner similar to that previously described, and as the manner of such coengagement will be perfectly apparent to those skilled in the art to which this invention relates, a detailed description thereof is not considered necessary.
The stove pipe sections, including the elbows, employed in connection with the stove proper each has one of its ends flanged inwardly and notched, as at 108, and the confronting end of the cooperating section is formed with projecting angle lugs 109 designed to be received in the notches 108, and the sections are given a twist on each other so that the shoulders provided by the lugs will contact with the inner faces of the notched flanges.
It is thought that the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the drawings will amply set forth the construction and advantages of the improvement without further detailed description.
Having described the invention, I claim:-
A knock down stove of the character described comprising a plurality of vertical plates interlocked in a manner to provide a rectangular shaped base, a horizontal bottom plate supported by the base and being provided with slots arranged adjacent its side edges, said bottom plate having its front and side edges extending beyond the front and side plates forming the base, a flange rising from the outer edge of theI front extension of the bottom plate, flanges formed on the bottom plate and having their ends engaging in a manner to provide a rectangular frame, side, front and rear walls rising from the bottom plate and engaging the frame thereon, means secured to the respective Walls for interlocking them in operative position, hook like thumbs clepencling from the side Walls and adapted to be receiveL in the slots of the bottom plate, a fuel door for the front Wall of the stove and a combined ash door and air draft plate having angle bent portions formed thereon for engaging the flange on the front extension 'of the bottom plate and a portion of the front Wall respectively and a top supported upon and secured to the Walls as and for the purpose specified.
