CIRCULAR-MUL'IIILE-PUNCHING MACHINE.
Application filed October 16, 1924. Serial No. 744,048.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LUDOLF II. Dn IVYK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Derby in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Circular-MuL tiple-P'unching Machines, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to a machine for punching a plurality of holes in metallic bands and more particularly the spoke holes in the felloes of automobile wheels.
The object of the invention is to provide a powerful and rapid machine which will accurately punch a plurality of holes coincidently, and form the required bosses and true the metal about the perforations made in such annular articles.
This object is attained by constructing a frame with felloe retaining means arranged to permit the quick placing in and taking out of a felloe, with a plurality of radially movable toggle operated slides carrying punches or other suitable tools inside of the felloe andv radially movable toggle operated slides carrying complementary tools outside of the felloe, and a powerful driving mechanism designed to act through the toggles for simultaneously forcing the internal tools outward and the external tools inward.
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 shows a vertical section of the machine -which embodies the invention. Fig. 2- is a front view of the machine, with portions broken away and removed. Fig. 3 is adetail of a portion of the operating mecha nism. Fig. 4 is a rear view of the machine. Fig. 5 is a section, on larger scale, showing the internal and external slides carrying the tools. Fig. 6 is a section of the parts shown in Fig. 5 looking from the front of the machine. Fig. 7 is a view of the tools designed to perforate from the inside. Fig. 8 is a View of the tools which may be used to perforate from the outside.
The front face of the frame 1 is preferably designed to be slightly oblique to vertical. Fastened in the bottom of a recess in the front face of the frame is a circular head plate 2 on the front-of which is an annular hub 3. The felloe 4 to be punched is inserted flatwise into the annular space in this hub.
Movable in and out in radial guide-ways 1n the head are the inner slides 5. In the machine illustrated there are twelve of these inner slides and each is designed to carry a tool 6. In radial openings in the annular hub on the head and movable in and out are the outer slides 7. There are twelve of these outer slides and each carries a tool 8 which is in line with and is complementary to the tool 6.
Iteciprocable in a hub 9 in the center of the frame is a solid plunger 10 with a head 11. Each of the inner tool slides 5 is connected with this head by a toggle acting link 12. This plunger is connected by a link 13 with a crank 14 on the operating shaft 15 that is mounted horizontally in suitable bearings 16 at the rear of the frame. The rotation of the crank reciprocates the plunger and through the toggle action of the head and links moves the inner tool carrying slides in and out with great power.
Mounted to reciprocate in a cylindrical chamber in the frame is a hollow cylindrical plunger 17. This plunger is forced forward by two cams 18 on the-operating shaft 15. The cams bear against rolls 19 mounted on the rear face of the rear-end of the cylindrical plunger. Links 20 connect the cylindrical plunger with the joints between toggle levers 21 and 22 the former of which is pivoted to the frame and the latter is connected with levers 23. The outer ends of the levers 23 are provided with oblong wedging cams 24 arranged to turn between blocks 25 and 26. The inner of these blocks are connected with the outer radially movable tool slides 7 and the outer of these blocks are connected with backing blocks 27. The rotation of the cams on the operating shaft intermittently forces the cylindrical plunger forward which through the links and toggle levers causes the turning of the wedge levers 23 in such manner that the wedge cams at their ends tend to spread the blocks 25 and 26 and force the outer tool slides inwardly toward the center of the machine. Springs 28 are arranged in the head around the outer slides to normally force these slides outward. The cams and crank on the operating shaft are timed to perform the required co-operating actions of the tools on the felloe that is located between the inner and outer tools.
iii
Encircling the backing blocks 27 is a revolvable gagging ring 29 or ring that has high and low sections. Attached to this ring is a toothed segment 30 engaged by a toothed sector 31 adapted to be turned by a lever 32 which is connected with a hand bar 33 that extends across the front of the machine. Moving this hand bar in one direction turns the gagging ring to a position in which the high sections are behind the backing blocks. hen in this relation the outer tool slides are held in operative position. liloving the hand bar in the opposite direction turns the gagging ring so that the low sections are behind the backing blocks. When in this relation the outer tool slides are free to be moved backward by their springs so as to open the space between the inner and outer tools for the insertion or ren'ioval of a felloe. lVhen the outer tool slides are in operative position, that is, are held forward by the high sections of the gagging ring, the action of the cams on the plunger through the toggle levers and cuiwed or cam ends of the wedging levers between the blocks, forces the outer tool slides inwardly. This movement of the outer tool slides is short but it is effected with great power.
The inner slides may be provided with tools having piercing punches 34 and boss forming punches 35 and a flattening surface 36, and the outer tool slides may carry complementary tools having a central opening 37 for receiving the piercing punch and scrap that is punched from the felloe, and a forming punch or die 38, as shown in Fig.
7. lVith tools of this shape the perforations are made and the bosses pressed to shape from the inside out. If desired the outer tools may be provided with piercing punches 39 and shaping punches or dies 40, and the inner slides may have tools with boss forming punches 4:1 and flattening surfaces 42, as illustrated in Fig. 8. In this latter ase the piercing is accomplished from the outside in and the scrap is passed inward through the opening do in the inner tool.
Loose on the operating shaft 15 which carries the crank for operating the central solid plunger and the cams. for operating the outer cylindrical plunger, is a gear l ithat is adapted to be connected with the shaft by a clutch 45. Meshing with the gear is a pinion -16 on the driving shaft 47 that has at one end a fixed pulley l8 and a loose pulley 49 and at the other end a fly wheel 50. Normally the clutch is in such position that the gear is disconnected from the operating shaft, being held in this condition by the roll 51 on the bar When the treadle 53 is depressed the rocker arm 54. link bell crank lever 56. rod 57, and rocker lever 58 coact to lift the bar 52 and move the roll 51 out of the path of the inclined part 59 of the clutch so that the clutch members will engage. This driving mechanism is of the ordinary design commonly used in punch presses.
With the powerful mechanisms of this machine a felloe can be quickly perforated, bosses formed about the perforations and the metal around the bosses flattened and shaped in the desired localities.
