Description

F. SOMM EB. Apparatus :for Preven inn ti-ng In'crusvtat Steam-Boilers.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
FRANZ SOMMER, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS -FOR PREVENTING INCRUSTATION lN STEAM-BOILERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. l 54,921, dated September 8, 1874; application tiled J une 29, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ SOMMER, of Berlin, Germany, have invented an Improved Apparatus for Preventing Incrustations in Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specication My invention relates to improvements in the reciprocating scraping or brushing apparatus employed in boilers for preventing the formation of incrustation; and consists in combining the brushes A with one or more movable frames, all as described hereafter, and as rep-- V the bristles of which are preferably constructed of wire; and in the lower boiler, B', there is a similar framework,F', also carrying brushes A, and connected to the upper frame-work by Aa rod, G, which extends through the leg D.
The frame-work F is connected, by a rod, a, to a crank, H, on a vertical shaft, I, which eX- tends through a stufling-box,d, in the shell of the boiler, and which is operated by any suitable mechanism, (not shown inthe drawing,) in such a manner as to impart a longitudinal reciprocating motion to the frame F and its brushes, and consequently to the lower frame, F', the connection with the latter, however, being such as to cause a less extended movement to be imparted to it than to the said upper frame. -This continuous sweeping action of the brushes upon the interior of the. boilers will eectually prevent the accumulation of sediment and the formation of incrustations. u
The brushes may be arranged upon their frames in any suitable manner which will permit them to reach every portion` of the shell of the boiler when reciprocated; but I prefer the arrangement illustrated in Figs. 3, '4, and 5, in which it will be observed that the separate brushes A A', Src., are secured at an angle to semicircularbars h of the frame, and that each brush has a squared stein, c', passing through the said bar It, and is acted on by a spring, lq, whichl tends to force the brush outward against the shell of the boiler, but
permits it to yield when drawn over the rivets f and other inequalities in the interior of the latter.
I propose, in some instances, to so arrange the brush-holding frames and the operating mechanism that an oscillating, instead of a reciprocating, movement shall be imparted to the brushes.
I do not claim, broadly, a brush arranged within a boiler so as to be reciprocated therein; but
I claim-.-
1. The combination, with a'boiler, of a frame Within the boiler, carrying a series of brushes arranged at regular intervals apart, and a crank-shaft connected to the frame and operating the latter, as set forth.
2. The combination of the reciprocating brush-frame F and the brush-frame F', and its rod G, operated intermittently from the frame F, as set forth.
3. The combination of the reciprocating frame, brushes A, and springs h, as described.`
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANZ SOMMER. Witnesses:
OscAE GERIKE, EivuLE RICHARD.
