IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,918, dated September 8 1874; application filed June 18, 1874.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, J osEPH SHEARER, of Allendale, in the county of Wabash and in the State of Illinois, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and do hereby declare that the follow in g is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in Washingmachines; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereafter.

Secured to each end of the box is a cross-head,,e, which is'slotted at each of its ends, and through these slots y y are passed the rods 9, for binding the head to the box. In each end of the box, near one side, is formed a vertical groove, in which are placed a number of slats, 3, which are separated by small blocks of rubber, 5, placed at suitable intervals apart, and which allow the slats to swell when wet Without injury to the box. The rubber blocks 5 are held between the slats by means of pins 9, which extend through the slats and rubber blocks. Upon the top of these slats are placed a block, 8, at each end, and a coiled spring, 6, is wound around the end and center pins 9 upon the top slats, which bears upward against the cross-piece 7, which extends across the box and is held under shoulders in the blocks 8, and the lower ends of said blocks extend down into the grooves in the box, so that their ends press upon the top slot, so as to prevent vertical displacement and to hold them rigidly in po sition. The washer consists of the two levers '5, providedwith journals d, which extend through the heads 0, and have the coiled springs b secured to them so as to throw the levers backward into position again after having been moved. The heads'e 6 being slotted and the washer being connected thereto, the washing-space in the box can be easily regulated for large or small clothing. The lower ends of these levers are connected by the splash-board 2, which has the gate 0 hinged to its lower edge, and at their upper ends by the removable handle 9.

As the clothes are pressed against the rack of slats the water passes through them, in'between the slats and up against the wall, and falls back on top of the clothing again. As the lever is moved backward the gate swings forward and lets the Water freely pass under the board 2 to the clothes again. By loosening the nuts on'the end of the rods 9 and moving back the heads and Wash-board, bed-clothing and other bulky articles can be inserted into the box to be washed.
