u Be it known that I, Louis A. DoURsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the County yoi: Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Self-Measuring Oil Pumps, of which the following is a speciiication. y My invention relates to measuring pumps adapted to be used to handle a great variety of liquids but which are particularly adapted to dispense lubricating oil. Garages and iilling. stations especially require such apparatus.
lThe principal'objeot of the invention is to provide a pumpwhose cylinder may be 'kept full of oil ready for immediate delivery, so constructed thatthe expansion of the oil Vvin the'cylinder will not cause the nozzlel to drip, and at the same timewill avoid* bursting the Cylinders'.` Another object of my invention is to provide a transparent measuring cylinder' withinV which the'piston is reciprocated in full view and subject to the inspection of purchasers at all'times.
Another objectv of my invention is to provide a simple, sturdy pump of pleasing appearance with a handle capable of being locked against'rotat'ion at any time." i 'Y My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings' in which:

Gear 9 is constantly-inlinesh' withthe gear, with the rack lland the rack and gear are held inl mesh by the flanged roller 12.
To the bottom of 8 is secured the usual Vsupply pipe 13 which extends substantially to the bottom of the tank 1 and is provided with any convenient form of strainer 35. A glass cylinder 14 is suitably mounted between the bottom cylinder head 8 and the top cylinder head 15, and tie rods 16 hold the parts securely in position.
, To theV top of the rack 11 is rigidly secured a piston'consisting of a lower cage 17 having an axial valve rod 20, rigidly secured thereto and a valve sea-t 18upon which seats a poppet valve 19. lThe poppet valve is bored axially at 22, a t-riiie large so as to .make a very easy lit onv the valve rod 20 and permits oil in the top cylinder vhead and glass Cylinder when expanded byfheat to'seep back downwardly thru the clearance space between the valve rod and poppet valve suiiiciently `to ease they pressure but not enough to attect the measure substantiallyL kThe movement of the valve 19 on the valve rod 20 is a wiping action which maintains the minute clearanceY ring between them. A top cage 21 holds the valve in position.` The usual cup leather 23 and its sustaining lspring QSa'are provided. Furthermore, when the re- `maining oil gets cooler and contracts, the
diilierence` in volume causes air to enter the `pump through the nozzle and to ill the space previouslyoccupied vby the oil. On the next operationoi' the pump, this air causes-the oil ,to sputter and spray lover the pump and/operator, and also causes the pump ,to give shortineasure.
In my invention when expansion takes piace, the excess oil between the piston and fthe nozzle does not go through the nozzle andcause dripping, but passes :through the rsmall,clearance space between the poppet valve .319 and the valve rod 20, then through the cage 17, thelower part of the cylinder le, the .,interio-rof lower cylinder head 8 and supply` pipe 13. When the oil cools and contracts, oil rises in the pipe 13 to cylinder head 8, 'lower part of cylinder 14, up thruA passage between 19 and 20, into the upper part of cylinder 14, keeping the cylinder` full 01"' oil at all times. The oil in the part of pump below the piston can expand freely into the `reservoir or tank 1, sincethere is no check vave intervening. Contraction of oil in same part is compensated for by oil passing from the tank ,into and lthroughthe suction pipe. i

reciprocating piston within said cylinder, an axially bored poppet valve in said piston and a fixed valve stem for said poppet valve, the difference in diameter between said stem and the'bore of said poppet valve being such as to allow minute quantities of oil under pressure to seep backfrom the upper to the under side of said piston.

A self measuring 011 pump having in combination a pump cylinder, a discharge nozzle in lfuid connection with said cylinder, a reciprocating pistonv within said cylinder, means for allowing minute quantities of oil under pressure to seep back, from theA discharge side of said piston to the supply side, a valve means between said cylinder and said discharge nozzle to prevent break in vacuum when said piston is on the downstroke. l l
