Description

July 14, 1925. 1,546,298
- T. w. MCGRATH PUNCH PRESS Filed March 11. 1925 INVENTOR ATTORNEYS Patented July 14, 1925.
UNITED STATES THOMAS WILLIAM MCGRATH, 0F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PUNCH PRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WILLIAM MGGRATH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Punch Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety device for use with punch presses or the like and aims to provide a device of this character whereby the hand of the operator will be positively and quickly withdrawn from beneath the ram of the press when the ram begins to descend.
A further object is to provide a safety device of this character which is equally well adapted for use with either right or left hand work or for both hands.
Another object resides in the provision of a safety device of this character which is of simple and durable construction, reliable and effective in operation and easy and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture and apply- Other objects and advantages reside 1n certain novel features of the construction, arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the invention applied to a press, and
Figure 2 is a view in section on line 22 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates generally a punch press which has the usual ram 2.
The safety device which constitutes the present invention includes an operating bar 3 secured as at 4. to the ram 2 and having an inclined portion 5 adjacent its lower end. The inclined portion 5 of the bar 3 is cooperable with the short arm 6 of a lever designated generally at 7 and fulcrumed on the press as at 8. The lever 6 has a long arm 9 which is pivoted to one end of a link 10. The other end of the link 10 is pivoted to the short arm 11 of a second lever 12 which is longer than the lever 7. The second lever 12 also has a long arm 13 and is also fulcrumed to the punch press as indicated at 1 1. A strap 15 is connected to the for,-v War a d; a? the le s e 13 25 t level? 2 Application filed March 11, 1925. Serial No. 14,762. Y
and is adapted to be secured to the wrist or hand of the operator. The fulcrums 8 and 14 of the levers 7 and 12 are vertical pivots on suitable brackets so that these levers swing in a horizontal plane. It is to be understood that the device may be mounted or fulcrumed on either side of the press so as to be used for either right or left hand work.
With this arrangement when the ram 2 starts to descend the inclined portion 5 of the operating bar 3 engages the short arm 6 of the lever 7 and swings the lever about its fulcrum. The motion of the lever 7 is transmitted to the strap 15 through the link 10 and lever 12 and is multiplied so that the hand of the operator is withdrawn from beneath the ram at the beginning of its descent.
By means of this simple and comparatively lnexpenswe arrangement which does not require any alteration of the punch press structure the danger of injury to the operator is practically eliminated even though the operator be less alert than he should be. The device withdraws the hand of the operator before it is liable to be injured or crushed.
I claim:
1. A safety device for use with punch presses or the like comprising a vertical operating bar connected with the ram of the press and having an inclined portion, a lever fulcrumed on the press and engaged by the lnclined portion of the bar, a second lever connected with the first lever, and a strap connected to the second lever and adapted t o be secured to the wrist or hand of the operator.
2. A safety device for use with punch presses or the like comprising a vertical operating bar connected with the ram of the press and having an inclined portion, a lever fulcrumed on the press and having a short arm engageable with the bar, a second lever, fulcrumed on the press and having a short arm connected with the long arm of the first lever, the long arm of the second lever being adapted to move the hand of the operator out from beneath the ram.
3. A safety device for use with punch presses or the like comprising a vertical operating bar connected with the ram of the press and having an inclined portion, a lever me an the pre and tame a sh r a e e eabla th the be; a l
lever, and a strap connected to the longerm of the second lever-and a-clapted to be secured to the Wrist or hand of the operator.
4. A safety device for use With punch presses or the like comprising a lever having a long arm and a, short arm, a second lever also having a long arm and a, short arm, a
operator.
