DOOR-FASTEYNING DEVICE.

Be it known that I, MICHAEL LYoNs, a
i citizen of the United States, residing at `Worcester, in the county ofIVorcester and State of vMassachusetts, have invented a new and useful Door-Fastening Device, of
Y which the following is a specification.
It is t-he object of my invention to provide a fastening device so designed that two doors or other similar parts may be securely fastene-d thereby, and that they may be held firmly in a single plane when thus secured. Y
Another object is to provide a door fastening device in which there are no loose parts to become mislaid or lost.
To the attainment of this object, I have provided a door fastening device in which a fastening bar has both a sliding anda swinging movement, and in `which. these movements must follow each other in a predetermined order.. y A
My inventionA furtherrelatesto arrangements and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter described .and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
A preferred form of the invention is shown in the drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a plan view of myimproved fastening device;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof;
Figs. 3, 4 and 5 are views similar to Fig. 2, but showing the parts lin successive positions;
Fig. 6 is an end elevation, looking in the direction of the arrow 6 in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 7 is a plan view similar to Fig. 1, but showing a slight modification.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 6, I have shown my improved fastening device as applied to a pair of double doors A and B. A`
Gne end of the bar 13 is reversely bent to form a hookelike portion 15 which is adapted te engage a keeper 15. This keeper s also mounted on the door A and has a portion 17 spaced from the body portion of the keeper' and provi-ded at its lower end with an enlarged end portion 18.
The hook-shaped portionvl of the bar 13 is adapted to embrace the portion 17 of the keeper 16 but will not pass over the enlarged'end portion 18.
A second keeper 20 is mounted upon the door B and is provided with a portion 21 bentV outward and spaced from the: main part of the keeper providing an open-ended recess toreceive the har 13 when it is swung downward about its pivot `11.
A Ahasp 22 is pivoted tothe end of the bar 13 and engages a stapleor other securing device 23, fixed to the door B. Apadlock 24 organy other usual or convenient fastening may be providedv to hold the hasp 22 and Afastening 23 together.
vThe method o-f operating my improved door fastening device is clearly indicated in Figs. 2 to 5 inclusive. In Fig. 2, the doo-rs are shown as securely locked, the bar 13 being seated the keepersl and 2.0, and
-being' held from swinging movement by the keeper 16, and from sliding movement by the fastening devicev23. Y
In the operation of unlocking the doors,
the pad-lock 24 is first removed, and the hasp 22 is swung forward as indicated in Fig. 3. The bar 13 is then pushed endwise as indicated in Fig. 4 until the hook-shaped end 15 of the bar clears the keeper 16. The bar 13 is then swung upon its pivot stud 11, out of the keepers 16 and 20 to the inoperative position shown in Fig. 5. In locking the doors, the operations above de'- scribed are performed in the reverse order.
In Fig. 7, Iv have shown a slight modification, in which the hasp 3() is pivoted to the opposite end of the bar 31 and in which the fastening device 32 is secured to the door A instead of to the door B. In this case the hooked portion 33 of the bar 31 may be conveniently formed as a separate plate riveted thereto.
Having thus described my invention and the operation thereof, the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent. vWhen the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 2 the bar is firmly seated in the keepers 16 and 20 and holds the doors firmly in a` single plane, from which they can be moved only by breakage of parts,un1ess lthe lock is removed and. the hasp is swung upward 4swinging connection to said plate, a hasp pivotedf at one end of saidfbar, a; securing device for said hasp, a keeper engaging said bar between said hasp and ypivot plate, and
a second keeper engaging kthe end of said bar 'remote from said liasp, said bar/being held froniany swinging or transverse movenient in any'portion thereotl ielative to said second keeper or to said pivot plate after saidbar is moved longitudinally to position relative to said second keeper and is oper- 'ativelyengaged thereby.
2. A fastening device i'oi' double doors comprising a/pivot plate and a keeper secured to one door, a second keeper and a securing device mounted on the other door, a bar having a vsliding and swinging motion relative to said pivot plate and adapted to engage said keepers, and a hasp on said bai' engaging said securing device, saida bai' be' ing held from all swinging or angular movenients by said pivot platevand by one of said keepers after said @bar has been moved longitudinally to late-hing position.

A fastening device for double doors comprising a pivot Vplate and a keeper sef cured to one door, said keeper having aportion spaced outward and provided with an enlarged end portion, a barhaving a sliding and swinging connection *to said pivot plate andy having a hooked end to engage said keeper within: said enlarged portion, a sec? ond keeper lined 'on the other door and" having an ropen-ended recess to receive said bar, a hasp pivoted to an'end of said bar,
and a securing device fior said liasp.
