JOHN ENRIGHT, or Prfrrsrriinn, MAssnoHUsE'rT-s.
PUZZLE.
Application led January 30, 1923. Serial No. 615,805.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that JOHN H. ENRiGI-rr, citizen of the United States of America, residing at 173 North St., Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts, has invented certain new and useful Improved ments in Puzzles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in puzzles and its leading object is to provide a puzzle of simple construction com prising a series of separated receptacles arranged in a common container or enclosure and a series of balls, the receptacles having distinctive colors or numbers or the like and the balls being arranged in groups or pairs, certain of the gro-ups or pairs having a color or number corresponding to one of the receptacles, which is so arranged that the balls can be rolled into the receptaclesso that the color or numbers of the balls will be located in the receptacle corresponding thereto.
lVith the above and other objects in view, the invention relates to certain new and useful constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts, clearly described in the following specification and fully illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. l
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 5 designates a container or enclosure having a base 6, side walls 7 and 8, and an end wall 9, all arranged to provide a box-like enclosure. The container is provided with a glass or transparent cover` or top wall 10. In each` corner of the enclosure or container is constructed a receptacle in the form of an L-shaped wall, four receptacles being shown in the four corners of the rectangular container or enclosure. The receptacles or pockets have end walls 12 provided with openings 13 therein. The openings of the receptacles on each side of thecontainer are arranged in opposition to each other and the upper marginal edge of the openings is located below the transparent cover 10 so as to provide a ridge 13 which is adapted to form a stop when the device is inverted.
Any system or color designation may be used, but the one preferred by me includes the colors red, white, green' and blue and these colors may be numbered 1, 2, 8 and i or lettered a, Z), c and d, or any other systeniof symbols may be used. In this way each that of one of the receptacles, so that one group will have a red color, another a white, a third a green color and a fourth ablue color, if this color combination is employed,
and other colors if a different combination is employed.
The object of the puzzle is to locate the balls or objects of each of the colors or markingsor designations, in the receptacle having a corresponding color, marking or designation, so that the colors or markings of the objects will be locatedfin the receptacle of a corresponding color or marking, at the one time. The receptacles are so arranged that the entrance openings through which the balls or objects enter and leave the receptacles are smaller than the receptacles themselves and are arranged directly opposite each other so that when an effort is made to locate the red balls in the red receptacle, the balls in the other receptacles will have to be held from rolling from their posit-ions and the effort of the puzzle largely consists in imparting momentum to certain of the balls while holding others against rapid movement. The puzzle provides a great deal of amusement, entertainment and even excitement to young and old persons. Perfectly spherical balls may be used or balls having a somewhat irregular surface mayy be used so that their rolling action can not be accurately guided and the difliculty of matching the balls somewhat increased.
Having described my invention, I claim. K A puzzle consisting of a boX having a receptacle in each corner thereof, the receptacles being spaced from each other to provide a cruciform runway between the, rev ceptacles, each of the receptacles having an opening in one end thereof of less Width receptacles in substantially parallel lines,y
and a series of rollajble articles arranged in the box, movable into each of the receptacle openings, said articles being arranged in groups, having definite characteristics, thepnzzle being designed to permit of one group being positioned in each receptacle.
Signed by me at Pittsfield, Mass.
' f JOHN I-I. ENRIGHT.
