Be it known that I, JOHN L. RoAoH, a citizen of the United States, residing inthe city and county of Childress and State'ot Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Driving Boxes for Locomotives, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a driving box for locomotives and has for its object to provide a box of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forthywithmeans'whereby the wear resisting liners will extend be low the horizontal center line of the journal or axle, thus increasingthe wearing surface and eliminating thev tendency to'lift the driving box on the journal when in operation.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a driving box having its body por tion formed of two sections permitting of making adjustments forrwear between the journal and driving box liners by adjusting the. pedestal wedge, thus eliminating the necessity of removing the driving wheels for repair. 7 'A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a driving box so constructed whereby the liability of heating the journal and the loosening of the driving box liners is reduced to a minimum, due to the fact thatthe pressure between the'journal and the liners can berelieved by -}proper adjustment of the pedestal wedge. l Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a sectional driving boxfor locomotives, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong compact, durable, thoroughly efficient in its use,lreadily installed, and comparatively inexpensiver With the foregoingand other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination andarrangement of parts, as hereinafter more specifioiall-y described and illustratedin the accompanying drawings, wherein is showrian embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood thatchange's,' variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended," l

which is substantially of inverted U-shape is indicated generally at 1, and is formed wit-h two oppositely disposed inverted sub stantially L- shapedsections 2, 3, of like construction and having the upper portions extending towards and in--;close proximity to eachother.'
Each of said "sections has a portion of its inner face of arcuate curvature to provide 7 a seat 4, for a liner 5. The seat4 extends from a point in close proximity to theinner upper edge'of the section and terminates at a point removed from the lower end thereof, but below the'horizont al center thereof. The length of each of the seats is such as to extend below the horizontal center line of the journal 6, indicated in dotted lines The inner terminus of the upper portion of each of said sections hasprojecting from the inner face thereof, a transversely extending vertically disposed rib 7, havingits outer face flush with the inner edge of the upper portion of the section. The upper end of the seat 4 merges into theinner side of the'rib 7 At the lowerterminus of the seat 4 each section is provided with an inwardlyprojecting and upwardlyinclined transversely extending lug 8. f f .7
The liner 5, which is segmental in com tour, is of a length toextend from the inner edge of the upper portion of-the section to the lug 8, and the liner iscut away, as at 9, to seat against the lower and inner side'edge of'the rib'7. The-upper edge of the liner 5 I is flush with the outer side edge of the rib 7. The liner 5 is mounted against the seat'4, abuts against the inner side; edge of the rib {and is supported on the upper side of the lug 8. A driving box for locomotives comprising an inverted U-shaped body portion formed of a pair of oppositely extending complemental sections each having its inner face formed with a depending vertically disposed longitudinal rib and an upwardly inclined lug spaced from the rib, the outer side of each of said ribs forming a continuation of the inner end edge-of a section said lugs positioned below the longitudinal center line of a journal, and oppositely dis- 1 posed liners seated on said lugs and abutting against the inner sides offandfurther overlapping said ribs, the upper end edges of said liners opposing each other and flush throughout with the inner end edges of said sections, said upper edges having inwardly pro ect1ng opposed lengthwise .extendlng grooves, and a thick, flat bridging strip common to said liners and seated in said grooves.

A driving box for locomotives comprising a body portion formed of a pair ofop positely disposed independent complemental sections, each of said sections provided on its top with a pair of spaced vertical flanges and a vertical web spaced from the inner end of and integral with the inner side of said flanges, said sections in connection with the webs and flanges thereof forming a pocket transversely of the top of the body portion for removably receiving a spring saddle support.

A driving box for locomotives comprising a body portion formed of a pair of oppositely disposed independent complemental sections, each of said sections provided on its top with a pair of spaced vertical flanges and a vertical web spaced from the inner end of and integral with the inner side of said'flanges, said sections in connection with the webs and flanges thereof providing a pocket extending transversely of the top of said body portion, and a removable spring saddle support mounted in said pocket.

A driving box for locomotives comprising a body portion formed of a pair of oppositely disposed independent complemental sections, eachof said sections provided on its top with a pair of spaced vertical flanges and a vertical web spaced from the inner end of and integral with the inner sideof said flanges, said sections in connection with the webs and flanges thereof forming a pocket transversely of the top of the body portion for removably receiving a spring saddle support, said webs of less height than the height of said flanges.
8. -A driving box for locomotives comprising a body portion formed of a pair of oppositely disposed independent comple-i mental sections, each of said sections provided on its top with a pair of spaced vertical flanges and a vertical web spaced from the inner end of and integral with the inner side of said flanges, said sections in connec 'tion with'the webs andflanges thereof prosaid sections provided with a pair of spaced flanges extending throughout the outer side thereof and a vertical web spaced from the inner ends of and integral with the inner sidesjof said flanges, said wegs,flanges and the top of said sections providing a trans versely extending pocket for removably receiving a spring saddle support, and each of said sections furthermore provided at its top with an apertured web integral with the inner sides of the flanges and spaced from' the first mentioned We 10. A driving box for locomotives comprising an inverted U-shaped body portion formed of a pair of oppositely disposed independent complemental sections, each of said sections provided with a pair of spaced flanges extending throughout the outer side thereof and a vertical web spaced from the inner ends of and integral with the inner sides of said flanges, said webs, flanges and the top of said sections providing a transversely extending pocket for removably receiving a spring saddle support, and each of said sections furthermore provided at its top with an apertured web integral with the inner sides of the flanges and spaced from the first mentioned web, that part of said flanges inwardly with respect to the webs out out to form shoulders, the inner faces of'said webs flush with said shoulders.
