To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY A. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hopedale, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shuttle-Feeler Thread Parters and Clamps, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanyingdrawings, is a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts. I
This invention relates to filling thread parting and clamping means, and more especially to such means for parting and clamping the spent filling end leading from the cloth selvage.
In filling replenishing looms it is now the usual practice to introduce a fresh'supply of filling when the filling in the shuttle has become substantially exhausted. The end of the old or spent filling extends from the cloth selvage to the shuttle containing the filling carrier or bobbin to be abandoned, and it is desirable that this end of filling be removed so that it shall not be carried into the shed. Various types of mechanisms have been provided with this general object in view, and in some cases the shuttle feeler ,has been provided with a thread parter and thread clamp which were moved from a front to a rearward position on call for re plenishment of'filling and acted to part and clamp the old filling end at a point near the entrance to the shuttle box and to carry the clamped end extending to the cloth selvage into a frontward position for subsequent treatment or cutting by the temple thread cutter or other selvage thread cutting means.
Inasmuch as the distance between the cloth selvage and the point where the parter and clamp act upon the spent filling end is less than the distance between the cloth selvage or fell of the cloth and the thread parter and clamp when the latter are in their front or inoperative position, it has been proposed heretofore to impart to the shuttle feeler a lateral movement towards the cloth selvage as it is moved to .its front position after performing its shuttle feeling function. This has resulted in preventing many of the breaks in the thread end leading from the cloth selvage, but in many instances the tension of the thread has pulled the clamped end thereof out of the clamp,

dangle from'the cloth selvage and fail to come into the range of action of the templ Attempts have been made to prevent the spent filling end from being pulled away from the thread clamp when the latter is moved to its front position and some degree of success has attended these efforts. It has been found, however, that where the thread parter and clamp may act satisfactorily on one size or character of yarn or thread, it becomes unsuitable for satisfactory operation with another kind or size of thread, and one of the purposes of the present invention is to provide a thread parter and clamp, preferably associated with the shuttle feeler, and so constructed and arranged that it will cut or part the spent filling end adjacent the inner end of-the shuttle box and clamp the portion leading to the cloth selvage by a twosfold clamping action, so that regardless of the size or kind of thread used, the same threadparter and clamp may be satisfactorily utilized.

' The loom frame may be of usual construction and is herein shown as comprising the uprights 1 and breast beam 2 having brackets 3 between which, one at each side of the loom, extends a transverse or rock shaft 4'. Thero'ck shaft 4 has an arm-5 extending rearwardly therefrom, and its rear end portion 6 bearsupon the pin 7 extending from the lower portion 8 of the shuttle feeler 9. Hung upon the arm 5 at 10 isthe member'll having-a'finger portion 12 which underlies the pin 7, and the member 11 is normally under the influence of the spring 13.
The shuttle feeler is pivotally supported on the stud or dead shaft 14 and extends therefrom through an inclined guide 15 which imparts t0 the shuttle feeler a movement transversely of the loom as the shuttle feeler is moved to and from its shuttle feeling position. All of the parts thus far described may be of usual construction or of any appropriate character.
The upper portion 9 of the shuttle teeler extends rearwardly and is provided with an opening 16 (Fig. 2) into which the weft or filling thread a may pass when the shuttle feeler is moved rearwardly to its shuttle feeling position.
Secured in fixed position at the side-face of the shuttle feeler 9 is the fixed blade 17 constituting the fixed parting member, the lower portion 18 of which extends rearwardly and somewhat below the opening 16 in the shuttle feeler.
Pivotally mounted on a pin or stud 19 projecting from the shuttle feeler is the movable parter 20 having a frontwardly extending heel portion 21. Secured to the heel portion 21 of the movable member 20 of the parter is a yielding metallic clamp 22 which may be appropriately, secured to the movable member 20 of the parter by pins 23 (Figs. 1 and 2). Interposed between the heel portion 24 of the yielding clamp 20 and the heel portion 21 of the movable parter 20 is a spacer 25 which serves to separate the movable parter 20 and the yiielding clamp 22 in order that there may be positioned between the two a fixed or stationary clamping member. Extending from the heel portions of the movable parter and movable clamp 22 is a pin 26 which may be utilized to open the parter and clamp as it moves to rearward position on call for replenishment, as usual in this type of mechanism.
Between the movable member 20 ot' the parter and yielding clamp 22 is the fixed clamping member 27 which is formed of nonmetallic. material, such, for instance, as fiber board, fiberoid, or like hard composition, which may be sufliciently hard as not to be worn or grooved by repeated clamping ac 'tion of the thread between it and its adjacent side members, as will hereinafter more fully appear. 7
In the present instance, the non-metallic fixed clamping member 27 has a toe portion 28, the top surface 29 of which is above the cutting point of the fixed and n'iovable parters during their operative n'lovement, the construction being such that when the movable parter is turned about its pivotal support 19 the side portion 30 of the parter opposite its cutting edge will first clamp the filling thread a: between itself and the side of the fiberoid of fixed non-metallic clamp 28, and thereafter will part the filling end, as indicated in Fig. 3. By thus first clamping the filling between the fixed fiberoid clamp and the side of the parter, all liability of the thread being pulled from between the clamping members while being cut, is avoided.
In the present instance of the invention,
the lower cutting edge of the movable parter 20 is inclined upwardly, as indicated at 31 (Fig. 3) so that the thread aleading between the sides of the parter and the fixed fiberoid clamp is not given a sharp bend.
The fixed fiberoid clamp 27 is mounted upon the pin-or stud 19, as indicated in Fig. 2, and its frontwardly extending edge is engaged by a pin 32 (Flg. 2) projectmg Irom the side 01 the shuttle feeler 9. The pin likewise passes through a similar opening in the fixed parter 17, so that both the fixed parter 17 and the fiberoid clamp 27 are held in fixed stationary position relative to the shuttle feeler.
The movable parter 20 is provided with an opening through which the pin 32 passes without obstructing its movement.
In order that the fixed fiberoid clamping member 27 may be yieldingly positioned towards the side of the movable parter 20, a spring washer 3-1 bears against the side of the fiberoid clamp and is pressed thereagainst by theihead of the bolt or screw 19, as indicated in Fig. 2.
As hereinbefore stated, the present invention comprises a yielding movable clamp in addition to the fixed fiberoid clamp and movable parter 20 and, as shown, such yielding clamp comprises the metallic member 22 which is, as heretofore described, secured to the movable parter, and is provided with an opening 35 to provide access to the head of the bolt or screw 19, and to give the desired resiliency to the yielding clamp 22 the latter has a bridge portion 36 bent outwardly, as indicated in Fig. 2, while the rearwardlyextending clamping portion 37 of the yielding clamp projects into cooperative relation with the side of the fiberoid fixed clamp.
' \Vhen filling replenishment is'called, the shuttle feelerwill be moved to its rearward shuttle feeling position, and the movable parter 20 and the .movable yielding clamp 22' which is connected therewith will be moved to their open position by the wing piece 38 acting upon the pin 26, as usual. lvhen the parts reach their final rearward position the spent filling thread a will be located within the opening 16 of the shuttle feeler and extend also over the top surface 29 of the fiberoid clamp, the relation of the fixed and movable parts of the parter and clamp being indicated in Fig. 1. As the lay moves frontwardly, it will engage the tailend portion of the movable parter, as indicated in Fig. 2, and cause the movable parter and the movable yielding clamp 22 to act upon the spent filling to clamp and part the same. The sequence of operations in parting'and clamping the-filling, is as follows. When the movable parter 20 and its associated movable clamp 22 are moved from the open position, Fig. 1, to the closed.
position, Fig. 2, the side of the movable parter 20 will first engage the thread between itself and the side of the fixed fiberoid clamp 27, and simultaneously therewith, the yield ing clamp 22 will act upon the thread a at the opposite side of the fixed fiberoid clamp and clamp the thread between itself and the fiberoid member, as indicated in Fig. 3. As the parter 20 and the yielding clamp 22 further move to their full cutting and clamping position, the cutting edges of the movable parter and the fixed parter come into action and cut or part the filling leading to the shuttle box, as indicated in Fig. 3. Thus, regardless of the size or kind of filling thread in use at the time, the two-fold clamping action of the thread about the sides of the fixed fiberoid clamp preliminarily to the cutting operation, insures that the portion of thread leading to the cloth selvage will be reliably clamped and moved frontwardly by the shuttle feeler into position for the action of the cutting device at the cloth selvage.
What is claimed is:
1. In a shuttle feeler thread parter and clamp, the combination of the shuttle feeler, a fixed and a movable thread parter on the shuttle feeler, a fixed thread clamping member, a yielding washer bearing upon the fixed clamping member, and a spring clamping member secured to the movable parter and overlying the washer that the fixed clamping member and spring clamping member may have independent lateral spring action to clamp the thread.
2. In a loom, a thread parter and thread clamp movable towards the lay into operative position, the thread parter comprising a fixed and movable parting member, a fixed non-metallic clamping member, laterally yielding means for pressing the fixed clamping member against the movable parting member, a spring clamping member acting independently of said yielding means on the opposite side of the fixed non-metallic clamping member and connected with the movable parting member .to cooperate in connection therewith and the non-metallic clamping'member to first clamp the spent filling at opposite sides of the non-metallic clamping member and then part the thread leading to the shuttle.
3. In a loom, the combination of a shuttle feeler, a thread parter comprising a fixed and a movable member, a spring clamping member secured to the movable member of the parter to move therewith, a fixed fiberoid clamping member located between the movable parting member and the spring clamping member and means acting independently on the fixed fiberoid clamping member for yieldingly pressing it against the movable parting member.
4. In a shuttle feeler parter and clamp, the combination of fixed and movable parting members, a fixed clamping member, a spring acting to press the fixed clamping and parting members together laterally, and an independently acting spring clamping member secured to the movable parter that threads of different thickness may be clamped.
5. In a 100111, the combination of a shuttle feeler, a thread parter comprising a fixed and a movable member, a spring clamping member secured to the movable member of the parter to move therewith, a filler piece separating the movable parter member and spring clamping member and a fixed fiberoid clamping member located between the movable parting member and the spring clamping member and yielding means acting directly on the fixed parting member independent of the spring clamping member for pressing the fixed parting member laterally against the movable parting member.
6. In a shuttle feeler thread parter and clamp, the combination of a fixed and a movable parting member, a fixed clamping member, a spring acting laterally upon the fixed clamping member, a laterally resilient clamping member acting independently of said spring against the fixed clamping member and mounted on the movable parting member.
7 In a shuttle feeler thread parter and clamp, the combination of a fixed and a movable parter, a fixed fiberoid clamp, a spring washer acting laterally to press the movable parter and fixed clamp together, a spring clamping member secured to the movable parter and formed with a bridge overlying the spring washer and provided with an opening for adjusting the tension of the spring washer.
8. In a shuttle feeler thread parter and clamp, the combination of a fixed and a movable parter, a fixed fiberoid clamp, a bolt passing through the movable parter and fixed clamp, a spring washer acting laterally to press'the movable parter and fixed clamp together, a spring clamping member secured to the movable parter and formed with a bridge overlying the spring washer.
