To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lewis J. Gunninwan'r, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mansfield, in the county of Richland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Electric Cigar Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to electric heating devices and particularly to electric cigar lighters.
The object of my invention is to provide an electric cigar lighter of relatively simple and compact structure.
In practicin my invention, I provide a screw plug refractory material upon which are mounted the usual contact terminals. A relativel thin sheet of electric insulating materia of substantially square form has mounted thereon a resistor member comprising a relative] thin sheet of resistance material, also 0 substantially square form, having a plurality of slots therein extendin alternately from opposite sides thereo The resistor member is secured on the sheet of insulating material by having its corner portions return-bent over the edges of the sheet, the two sheets being cated diagonally of each other. Integral terminal extensions are provided for the resistor member and are connected to the contact terminals.
An annular member of electric-insulating material is located against the outside face of the resistor sheet and an annular cap member of metal holds the assembled resistor and supporting plate in their proper o rative positions against the open end of t e refractory screw plufi.

of such dimensions as to fit into an ordinary screw socket.
The threaded portion of the member 12 is provided with an annular metal member 13 that is formed with screw threads to permit of its being mounted in its pro r operative position on the screw-threadtd rtion of the'member 12 substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The member 13 constitutes one of the terminals of the device in a manner well known in the art. The other terminal of the device is constituted by a machine screw 14 that is located in, and extends through, an opening 15 in the otherwise closed end of the screw plug member 12, a nut 16 being provided on its inner screw-threaded end in order to hold the bolt 14 in its roper operative position substantially as il ustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
A resistor member 17 comprises a relativel thin sheet of resistance material, whic sheetv is provided with a plurality of longitudinally-extending spaced slots 18 that extend alternately. from opposite edges of the sheet whereby a relatively long and nar row path is obtained to be traversed by the current when the resistor member is connected to a suitable source of electric ener Integral, relatively narrow, ' termina portions 19 and 21 are provided on the member 17 to permit of the connection of the resistor member proper to the hereinbefore described terminal members of the device. In order to rmit of fittin the terminal portions 19 an 21 easily wit in the screw plu the resistor member is mounted on 1ts support, as will be hereinafter described, these members are rovided with ofi'set portions, as illustrated in Fig. f the drawmg.
A sheet 22 of relatively thin, electric-insulatin material, such as mica, is of substantia y square form and is provided with rounded corners 23, the width of the member 22 between the dia nall opposite corners 23 being substantiall t e same as the outer diameter of an en arged' rtion 24 of the screw plug. The sheet 17 as one of its faces located closely adjacent to one of the faces of the plate 22 and the two members are locked diagonall of each other, substantially as illustrated in Fig. 4 of the drawing of the sheet 17 may be return-bent around when in order that the corner portions 2 plate of electric-insulating material the edges of the member 22 whereby the member 17 is maintained in its proper operative position relatively to, and on, the sheet 22.
The resistor member 17 mounted on the supporting plate 22 is located against the open and enlarged end of the screw plug member 12 and an annular member 25, comprising a relatively thin sheet of electricmsulatin material, such as mica, is located against t e outer surface of the resistor sheet 17. A metal cap member 26, of annular form, is located with its inner surface ogreratively' engaging the outer surface of t e member 25 and 1s rovided with an integral flange portion 2 of such depth that it may be spun over the inner shoulder portion of the enlarged end 24 substantially as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
In assembling the resistor member and, its mounting plate on the screw plug member 12,.one of the two terminal strips 19 or 21 has its outer end placed in operative engagement with the terminal member 14 and it may be secured thereto either by the use of the nut 16 or it may be permitted to extend through the opening and be soldered into a suitable slot provided in the outer face of the screw 14. The outer end of the other terminal strip is fed through a slot 28 provided in the body of the screw plug 12 and ma then be suitably soldered against the member 13. The annular member 25 may then be placed within the cap member 26 and the two members placed in their properoperative positions on the outer open end of -the screw plug 12 and the outer edge of the flange 27 spun over.
The device embodying my invention thus provides a relatively simple and inexpensive construction for an electric cigar lig ter comprising relatively few parts and one which may be easily and quickly mounted within an ordinary lamp socket to be energized thereby. If it is found that the rematance of the resistor member 17 is not sutliciently high to. permit of its being energized from the ordinary 110 volt circuit, 1t is, of course, possible to rovide a suitable voltage in accordance wit the resistance of the member 17 and the amount of energy which it is desired to transform into heat.

I desire, therefore, that only such limitations shall be placed thereon as are imposed by the prror art or are specifically set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my mvention:
1. A cigar h hter comprising a. tubular refractory mem r having a closed operaend, a.
nuance tively engaging said tubular member at its 0 11 end, a slotted resistor member supported by said plate of electric-insulating material and secured thereto b integral return bent portions and means fbr securing said plate and said resistor member against said tubular member.
2. A cigar lighter comprising a tubular refractory sup rting member, a thin sheet of electric-insu atin material, at one end of said refractory mem r, a thin sheet resistor member, laterally and alternately slotted and mounted on said electric-insulating member and secured thereto by integral return bent portions, and means for secu said electric-insulating member and said rosistor member in proper operative positions against said refractory member.
3. A cigarv lighter. comprising a tubular refractory sup rting member, a thin sheet of electric-insu ating material located at one end of said refractory member, a thin sheet resistor member, having laterally and alternately extending slots therein and secured on said sheet of electric-insulating material by integral return-bent portions, and means for securing said sheet of electric-insulating material and said sheet resistor member against the end of said tubular refractory member.
4. An electric cigar lighter comprising a relatively thin sheet of electric-insulating material, a relatively thin sheet of resistance material having slots therein extending alternately from opposite sides thereof, said sheet of resistance material being secured against said sheet of insulating material by fold' its corners over said insulating sheet, a tub ar refractory member, and means for securing said sheet of insulating material and said sheet of resistance material against said tubular refractory member.
5.
