Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CYRUS KINSEY, OF GENESEO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATCRS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,257, dated August 18, 1874; application filed July 7, 1874.
To all 'whom it may concern.-
' Beit known that I, CYRUs KINsEY, of Geneseo, in the county of Henry and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Gultivators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a coupling for uniting the plows to the axle'of a cultivator, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, in which- Figure l'is a plan view, and Fig. 2 a central vertical section.
A represent-s an ordinary arched axle of a cultivator, said axle having a horizontal part, A', on each side of the center, upon the extreme ends of which the wheels B B are placed. C represents the plow-beam, to be coupled to the axle. At the front end of the beam C are secured two metal plates, D D, 011e on the upper, and the other on the lowerside, which plates extend a suitable distance in front of the end of the beam. In these plates, immediately in front of the beam, are curved slots a, and in their. extreme ends are holes for the passage of a bolt. G Grepresent two straight bars, notched in both edges, as shown, and provided, each, on one side, with lugs or projections d d, so that, when the bars are placed on opposite sides ofthe part Al of the axle A,
said lugs will meet, and the whole form a bisected skeleton sleeve or box around the axle.
When the bars G G are thus placed upon the axle the plates D D are placed from behind above and below the same, and a bolt, b, is passed through the front ends of the plates, in front of the bars G, thus holding the whole to the axle.
By moving the plow-beam the bolt b may be made to enter either of the notches in the front edges of the bars G, when a pin, h, may be passed through the slots a in the plates, and the corresponding notch in the rear edges of the bars. This locks the bolt bin its notches, allowing it to act as a fulcrum, upon which the plow-beam may swing from side to side to the extent of the slots a. at the same time as the plow-beam may be moved up and down, as desired, 'the bars G turning on the axle.
By removing the pin h the plow-beam may be moved to either side, so as to cause the bolt b toenter other notches iu the front edges of the bars G.
Having thus fully described my invention,
what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with an `axle A and plow-beam C, of the slotted platesD D, notched bars G G, bolt b, and pin l1., all substantially as andfor the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the plates D D, provided with bolt-holes and curved slots a, as described, the notched bars G G, bolt b, and pin h, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. Y
GYRUS KINSEY.
Witnesses J. A. KEINE, J As. M. ALLAN.
