TRIP DEVICE FOR PREVENTING BREAKAGE F TRANSM ISSION ROPES. i
Application filed October 30, 1924. Serial No. 746,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL TnMnnY, a subject of the King of: Great Britain, and a resident of the city of Nanaimo, in the Province of British Columbia, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trip Devices for Preventing Breakage of Transmission Hopes, of which the following is a specification; i
My invention relates to improvements in trip devices for preventing the complete breakage of transmission ropes, and the object oi my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and easily installed device adapted to be operated practically instantaneously by the rope when a strand of the same breaks to shut off the power and stop the operation of the driver, thus preventing the complete breakage of the rope and en abling it to be readily repaired and opera-- ations resumed without any undue delay.
I attain this object by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. 1 is a side view of my device.
F 2 is a plan view.
Similar figures of reference indicate similar parts in the views.
1 indicates the rope pulley, the driver, the direction of its rotation being indicated by the arrows in Fig. 1. Disposed transversely across the face of the pulley and in close proximity thereto is a rod 2 formed as a crank as to its ends 3 and 4 and arranged normally in a horizontal position, the ends 3 and 4 being freely supported in suitably secured bearings 5 and 6, and one end, 3, is bent at right angles and extended, as at 7, to carry a counterweight, 8, while the oppo site end, 1, is bent to provide an inwardly and downwardly inclined arm 9 the outer end of which is jawed, as at 10.
11 indicates a link pivotally hung at and to a suitable place by a pin12 secured into the upper end of the link, which link is provided intermediate its length and at its.
lower end with pins 13 and 141 respectively, and is connected to the arm 9 by a connecting rod 15 attached at its opposite ends respectively to the jaw 10 of-the arm 9 and the lower pin 14.
16 indicates the governor lever which when moved in the direction of the arrow about its pivot 17 draws the rod 1.8 in the same direction. and operates the governor valve to shut the steam off the engine, the
lower end of which lever 16 is normally in contact with the upturned end 19 of a lever 20 pivoted adjacent its outer end on a suit, ably. secured pivot '21 while its opposite end rests on the intermediate pin 13 of the link 11, and at a suitable point in the length of this lever 20 is hung a counterweight 22, as
shown in Fig. 1.
It will, of course, be understood that the complete device is assembled and supported in approved mechanical manner.
In use the crank is disposed horizontally with the member 2 lying close to the rim of the pulley 1 and the end of the lever 20 resting on the pin 13, the link 11 being vertical and the entire device being arranged as indicated by the full lines in Fig. 1. On a strand of a rope becoming loose it flies out as the pulley rotates and strikes the rod 2 immediately, knocking it upwardly, thus drawing the link 11 forwardly so that the pin 13 is drawn from under the end of the lever 20, which falls downwardly and swings the end 19 around on its pivot 21, thus moving the governor lever 16 in the direction of the arrow and closing the valve, all as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 1, so that the steam is shut off the engine practically coincidently with the stranding off the rope, thereby preventing its stranding any further with consequent complete breakage.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a simple means for preventing breakage of transmission ropes, which is easily installed and maintained, and which accomplishes its object in a highly practical and efficient manner..
What I claim as my invention is 1. A trip device for preventing complete breakage of transmission ropes after partial breakage comprising, a weighted lever up-- turned and pivoted at one end, withdrawable means maintaining said lever normally .horizontal, and means adapted to be actuated by an outflying rope strand to withdraw the withdraw-able means clear of the lever.
2. A trip device for preventing complete breakage of transmission ropes after partial breakage comprising, a lever upturned and pivoted atone end weighted intermediate its length, a vertical link pivoted at its upper end having a pin intermediate its length on which the free end of said lever is supported maintaining it normally horizontal, and means adapted to be actuated by an outfiying ropestrand to swing'theilink and carry its intermediate pin clear ofthe lever.
3. A trip device for preventing complete breakage of transmission ropes after partial breakage comprising, a lever upturned and pivoted at one end Weighted intermediate its length, a vertical link pivotediat its upper end having a pin intermediate its length on which the :t'ree end of said lever is supportedmaintaining it normally horizontal, a rod disposed transversely in close proximity to the transmission 'rope driving pulley rim having crank ends supported in suitably mounted bearings, one of said ends beingbent to dorm-an arm, anda connecting rod between said arm and the lower end of the vertical link.
A trip device "for preventing complete length, a vertical link pivoted at its upper end having a pin'intermediate its length on whit-lithe free-end-ofsaidrlever is supported maintaining it normally horizontal, a rod disposed transversely in close proximity to the transmission rope driving pulley rim having crank ends supported in suitably mounted bearings, -one of said ends being bent to form right angled extension and provided ovith a counterweight and the other to form an arm, and 'aconnecting rod between said warm and the lower end of the vertical link.
Dated-at Nanai1no,-B.-C. this 11th day of October, 1924.
SAMUEL TEMBEY.
