Description

INVENTOR.

BY 2 M ATTORNEY.
Patented June 16, 1925.
WILLIAM 13. orsan rnencrsoo, oanrron ma.
. srovnf Application filed June 10, 1924. Serial No. 719,159.
To all whom it mag concern a citizen of the United States, residingat San Francisco, county of SanFrancisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates toimprovements in stoves, and more partict'tlarly to portable or. knock-down stoves designed for military or camping uses.
On July 2nd, 1907 I obtainedLetters-Patent No. 858872, which disclosesa stove of the type improved by the present invention,
and the primary object of this invention isto increase thesize or area of the surface of cooking compartment and to ellminate the liability of burning food cooking in the oven.
Another object of the inventionis toprovidethe fire box'compartment of the' above mentioned patent with a detachable pipe section arranged, when in use, to feed the products of combustion into the oven chamber and adapted when'not in use to occupy the m en chamber, so that the various parts ofthe stove may be packedin nested rela tion for transportation purposes.
With the'foregoing objects outlined and with other objects inview which will appear as the description ;proceeds, the invention consists in the novel featureshere inafter. described in. detail, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and more particu .larly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is "a longitudinal vertical sectional View, partly broken away, of the'stove parts in assembled relation and readyfor use.
Fig. =2 is aperspective"view of the improved pipe section and the means for connecting the same to the rear end of the fire box.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view taken on line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
F or the purpose of the following detail description, I am using the same reference characters as are in said patent. wherever this is possible.
In the drawing, 1 designates a firebox, preferably formed of sheet metal and having sides 2, ends 3 and a top t. The lower end of the firebox is open, so that the fire may be built directly on the ground. The
fireboxpis' provided with a hinged door 5 "for the purpose of feeding fuel into the firebox etc. p
The rear end 3 is. provided with an opening 3 partially surrounded by flanges 3 and 3 which forma frame adapted to receive a removable, pipe section 8 This pipe section has a rectangular flange -adapted to slidably fit in the fianges ii 3 and provided with anopening3 designed to registerwith theapertur'e Elise that' the products of comi bustion from the firebox will pass out through the pipesection. The. pipe section has a closedbottom 3 so as to cause the products of combustion topass upwardly.
Inmy patent above mentioned the outletopenln'g for'theproducts of combustion is [placed in'the top 4 ofthe fireboxandan annular flange surrounds said-opening,:so that theovencOinpartmentQ projected for quite a distance over the upper surface ofthetop:v
4 and decreased the effective surface which could be utilized "for cooking purposes.
'Owing to the; present construction the oven -9 may be located arelatively greater distance from the'front end 3 of-tliefirebox,..
and consequently substantially all of the upper surface of the top' of the firebox may be utilized for cooking purposes, that is, to
support fryingpans, stewing pots, etc.
The oven 9 is especially well adapted for: 'baklng and the like, and s formed from sheetiron or some similar suitable material. Like the firebox, the oven 1s. preferably substantially rectangular inform and has atop 10, bottom 11, sideslQ ZtDClBIKlS 14 joined in any suitable manner. The bottonrll is provided-with anopening-lfinear one end per end of the. pipe seotion3 when-thepven is mounted thereon, as clearly shown in Fig; 1. To support that part of the oven which is not mounted upon the firebox, I provide the oven with a fold-able support or leg 16 pivoted at that end of the oven remote from the opening 15. The support is adapted to 'ofthe oven adaptedto register with the updition. Furthermore, the pipe section 3 is also of a size suitable to be stored within the oven.
The oven is provided with an inner compartment 23, forming double walls at the top, bottom and ends, with acontinuous chamber 24 between these double walls. The compartment 28 extends from one side to the other of the oven, and consequently there are no double side walls or chambers at the sides. One of the side walls of the oven is provided with the usual door, (not shown). The hot gases from the fire escape from the firebox through the opening 8 and pipe section 3 into the chamber 24, circulate therein and find an outlet through the opening 17 and the smoke pipe 19. It will be understood that in this way the oven is completely surrounded by the products of combustion, and owing to the fact that these products of combustion must pass through the pipe section 8, they will not be as hot as it they enter the chamber 24 directly from the firebox, as in my prior patent, and consequently there will be less danger of burning food in the oven.
For the purpose of causing the products of combustion to pass entirely around the compartment 23, I provide a damper 28, consisting of a flat plate having a laterally disposed end, which is adapted to slide on the top of the inner compartment 23, and to close the opening between the upper part of the chamber 24 and the front end of said chamber, which is arranged over the pipe section 3. The damper is provided with the usual handle 29, which projects through an opening 30 in the end of the oven.
In order to pack the stove for storing or shipping, the smoke pipe 19 is removed a d separated into its sections, These sections, together with the pipe section 3 are placed within the compartment 23 of the oven. The o en 9 is then detached from the firebox and the support 16 is folded upwardly against the lefthand end of the oven, and then the oven is placed through the opening at the bottom of the firebox 4-, after the latter has been inverted.
From the foregoing it is believed that the construction and advantages of the invention may be readily un derstood and it is apparent that changes may be made in the de tails disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims.
hat I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. A portable stove for camping purposes and the like comprising a firebox having a cooking top, an open bottom and a substantially vertical wall, said wall being provided with an outlet opening to discharge the products of combustion, an upwardly ex tending pipe section detachably connected to said wall and having an opening registering with said outlet opening, an oven having one of its ends projecting only slightly over and resting on the cooking top ot' the firebox, the bottom of said oven having an opening into which the pipe section extends for discharging products of combustion in to the oven, said oven having a baking compartment of sufficient size to house said pipe section when the latter is detached from the firebox, and the oven being of such size to be nested in the firebox when the stove is not in use.
2. A portable stove comprising a substantially rectangular firebox having a cooking top and a vertical end wall, an outlet port in said end wall, a frame arranged on the end wall and partially surrounding said port, a pipe section having a frame adapted to slidably engage the frame on the end wall of the firebox and provided with an opening adapted to register with said port, said pipe section having a closed bottom and an open top, the latter projecting above the cooking top of the firebox. a substantiallv rectangular oven adapted to be nested within the firebox and having an openin arranged in close proximity to one of its ends and adapted to receive the upper end of the pipe section, said oven having a cooking compartment of a sizetohouse said pipe section when the latter is detached from the [ire-box, one end oil the oven resting directly on the cooking top. and an auxiliary support for the other end of the oven.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature.
