To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs T. ilnnen, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Fairoaks, county of Sacramento, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jacks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in lifting" or spreading jaeks, and particularly to a. small type adapted to be used for spreading the spokes away from the fellys of motor vehicle Wheels to enable spoke tightening shims, such as are now on the market, being placed therebetween.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a jack having besides the usual rotatable or relatively rotatable screw stem by means of which the head and foot pad of the jack are separated, a means for im parting an additional separating movement to the head and foot in such a manner that not only can great excess separating pressure be applied without the use of a corresponding amount of physical effort, but this additional movement takes place without any tendency to rotation between the relatively rotatable parts of the jack.
In this manner not only may the head and foot of the jack be separated to an extent greater than is otherwise possible with an equal expenditure of physical effort, but owing to the elimination of the rotative tendency with this additional movement, the parts against which the head and foot of the jack bear are not subjected to the rubbing and twisting effect inevitably had when the jack parts tend to rotate as in ordinary jack construction.
This feature is especially of value in connection with operations on automobile wheels, on which an enamel and high polish is frequently ruined by the twisting movement of a jack pad applied thereagainst.
In carrying out the above object I make use of the same principle as that shown in my oo-pending. application for patent, Serial No. 712,772, filed May 12th, 1924, as will be clearly seen hereinafter.
While this jack is especially designed and shown for use in connection with automobile wheels it is to be understood that the same construction may be incorporated in jacks for any purpose where the additional spreading feature would be of value.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inxpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purpose for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of U the following specification and claims.

Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral .1 denotes a hollowbody member tapped at one e'ndand solid at the other.
From the solid end a central pin 2 projects outwardly and is loosely connected to a pad 8 adapted to abut against the felly a of the wheel between any two of the spokes 5.
Screwed into the tapped end of the body 1 is a screw stem 6, whose outer end is unthreaded and is slidably mounted in the bore 6 of a foot block 7. This foot is wedge shaped at its outer end to seat between the spokes 5 at their junction with each other, as shown in Fig. 1.
The stem is prevented from rotating in the foot but is allowed to have limited longitudinal movement relative thereto by means of a pin 8 screwed into the foot on one side thereof and extending into a longi-' tudinal slot 9 cut in the stem 6.
Tu'rnably mounted in the foot transversely is a pin 10 having a head 11 on one end to which awrench may be applied. Intermediate its ends this pin is cut away and made out of round, as shown at 12, for a length at least equal to the diameter of the stem 6. Thus that portion of the pin is cam shaped in cross section.
In operation this pin initially turned so that its flat portion faces the stem 6 and the latter rests thereagainst. A wrench is then applied to the member 1, whose sides are polygonal, so as to cause the same to be advanced on the threads of the stem 6, and
