IMPROVEMENT IN BRACELETS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,058, dated August 11, 1874; application filed a May 21, 1874.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, MARTIN LOGHNER, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l is a sectional front view of my bracelet when the catch is unlocked. Fig. 2 is a similar view thereof when the catch is locked. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the bracelet. Fig. is a modification of the looking mechanism.

'My invention consists in combining, with the catch of a bracelet, a bar or bolt for lockin g it in position, in such a manner as to guard against an accidental opening of the bracelet, the said bolt being subjected to the action of a spring, so that it looks automatically; also, in combining with the locking-bolt a latch provided with a spur, which fits in an aperture in the side of the bracelet, in such a man ner that, by adjusting the spur in the said aperture, the bolt is allowed to follow the action of its spring, so as to lock the catch, while, when the spur is withdrawn and rested upon the solid portion of the said side of the bracelet, the bolt is held against the action of its spring, so as to free or unlock the catch.

In the drawing, the letters A B designate the two halves of a bracelet, which are united at one end by a hinge-joint, a, and at the other end by a catch, 0, of the ordinary construction. This catch is provided with a button, b, by means of which it is depressed in the act of opening the bracelet. D designates my locking bar or bolt, which is placed crosswise of the bracelet, and at or near the edge of the part A, which carries the catch. The bolt is made to pass below the button b of the said catch, being guided in sleeves or sockets 0, and it is provided with an enlargement, d, behind which I place a spring, 0, that has a tendency to throw the enlargement under the aforesaid button. When this enlargement is so thrown under the button b, as seen in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, the latter cannot be depressed, whereby the catch is effectually locked in position, and it is impossible to open the bracelet. Upon one end of the bolt D, and exterior of the bracelet, is secured a latch, E, which is provided with a spur, f, that fits into a hole or aperture, g, formed in the side of the bracelet;

In locking the catch 0, as above stated, the latch E is turned so as to adjust the spur f in the said aperture g, when-the bolt is allowed to follow the action of the spring 6 to the extent of the length of the spur, which is such that the enlargement d is brought under the button.

In proceeding to free or unlock the catch 0, I raise the latch E against the action of the bolt-sprin g, and turn the spur f upon the solid surface or side of the bracelet, as shown in Fig. 1. The bolt is thus held in such a position as to withhold the enlargement'd from under the button b, when the same is free to be depressed.

Fig. at shows a modification in the arrangement of my locking bar or bolt. According to this arrangement, I dispense with the latch E, and reverse the position of the spring 6, as

shown, the bolt being in this case depressed in order to free or unlock the catch.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The combination, with the catch 0, having the button 11, of the bar D, provided with the enlargement d, and with the spring 0, for throwing the enlargement under the button to lock the bracelet, all being constructed and arranged to operate substantially as described.

2. The bolt D, provided at one end with the latch E, having the pin or spur f, for fitting into the aperture 9 in the bracelet, in combibation with the spring 0, catch 0, and button 12, all constructed to operate substantially as described.
