Be it known that I, LEWIS FRITZ, a. citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State y of Illinois, have invented certa-in new and useful Improvements in Baby Carrages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to novel improvements in baby carriages, andhas for its principal` object the provision of an improved construction which will be highly eliicient in use.
Among the objects of the invention is the provision for imparting a rocking motion to the body of the carriage when the cariage is in motion.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to ythe accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a baby carriage, embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional detail view taken substantially on line 9.-'-2 of Fig. l; and
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail view taken substantially on line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, the preferred form of construction comprises a carriage body 5 mounted on suitable spring supports 6 and 7 which are in turn carried by axles 8 and 9, the axle 9 being provided with a crank 10, and said springs are preferably Substantially U-shaped with the bight portions in spaced relation and located opposite the handle carried by the lower branches of the springs 6, the construction being such that a uniform and unbroken oscillation will be imparted to the body through theV medium of the mechanism to be hereinafter described as shown. The axles S and 9 carry wheels 12 of any suitable and approved construction.-
The object of the invention is to impart a rocking motion to the body 5 when the carriage is in motion, and to accomplish this object I provide a toothed gear lil carried by a suitable bracket 15 fixed to the underside of the body 5, the toothed gear 14 being connected to the crank 1() through the medium of a link 16. The toothed wheel 14 is held against rotation by a dog 17 slidably mounted in a `cylinder 18 carried by bracket 15. The dog 17 is normally held out of engagement with the toothed gear 111 by means of a Suitable spring member 19. The dog 17 is brought into engagement with the toothed gear 14: through the medium of a suitable operating lever 2O carried by the body 5 and attached to the dog 17 through the medium of a flexible cable 21.
Vhen the dog 17 is in engagement with the teeth of the gear 11i it will be readily seen that the gear is held against rotation.
As the carriage is in motion the link member 1G will impart a locking motion to the body 5 due to the action of the crank 10, this motion Vbeing permitted due to the location and arrangement of the spring members 6 and 7 as clearly illustrated in Fig. 1. Vhenthe dog 17 is out of engagement with the gear 14 it will be readily seen that the gear will be permitted to rotate'and a rocking motion will not be imparted to the body 5.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefme, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within 'the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent', is:
1. In a carriage of the class described including in combination with a body,awrunning gear for the body, the same including an axle having a crank, `a gear wheel on the body, means for driving said gear wheel from said crank, a spring-urged dog normally out of engagement with said wheel, and means supported on the body and connected with the dog -for moving the latter into engagement with said wheel.
2. In a carriage of the class described inf cluding in combination with a body, of wheel bearing axles, spring members secured to the axles and supporting the body, a crank formed in one of the axles at the rear of the body, a gear wheel carried by the body, a connection between the crank and the gear wheel for operating the latter to oscillate said body upon rotation of the axles, and means operable from a point on the body to prevent oscillation of the gear Wheel upon rotation of the axles.
3. A device ofthe class described comprising in combination With the body of a baby Carriage and one of the axles thereof of a toothed gear carried by said body and oper-V atively connected to said axle for imparting a rocking motion to saidbody upon ther-otation of said axle; a dog for engagement 10 with the teeth of said gear to prevent rotation thereof; and means for moving said dog into and outo engagement With the teeth of said gear.
