Application iled June 10,
To' @ZZ wlw/m, t may concer/i Be it known that we, lViLLL-itr l). Brown, THOMAS A. Enniir'i, and GEORGE MoALrrNn BizrrrAIN7 citizens of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, iave invented a new and useful Cutting` 'l ip for Torches, of which the itolloiviirg` is a specilication in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the saine.
This `invention relates to a cutting tip tor Oxy-acetylene or Oxy-hydrogen torches and its object is to produce a cuttingtip which Will eiiectually prevent the heating` ianies from snapping` back into the torch or pipe line and interfering with the operation of the torch.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art that by the use ot hydrr'igen or acetylene that special kinds ot' tips or mixing' devices are necessary to prevent the laine from striking back into the tip 'or even into the hose line itself and destroyinp` the tip or destroying the hose line. y
In the present invention ineaiis is provided to so direct the gas to the burner tip as to prevent the direct striking back of the flame because of the arrangement of holes in the burner tip.
.Other objects ot the invention Will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment ofi `the invention is shown in the accoinpanying` drawings vin which the same reference vnumeral is applied to the saine portion throughout, but We are aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Figure l. is a longitudinal sectional vieiv ot a cutting; torch tip adjacent its end.
Fig. Qi, is a transverse sectional view of the torch on the line 2-2 Fig. l.
3 is an end i'ieiv of the torch loolrn from the lovver portion of the sheet l"i l.
The numeral l indicates the handle of the torch through which the oxygen passage.- ivay 2 extends. another*mijden passageivav i extends therethroiurh at the side o' they passageway 2 and the hydrogen or :ufesylene gas passageway el; lies at the sido of the passageway 3.
The endolthe handle l is chambered out to receivea frustoconical head 5, two annu-- lar grooves 6 and 'T surround it. @ne of said grooves to be positioned to cover the end of the hole 3 and vthe other of said ltieularly described forni.` Within the pi i920. Serial No. 388,070.
and 9 extend through head 5 and f handle l by ineens of the annular nut 14Ek Which engages the flange" l5' and holds the tip in place. A small lug- 16 on 'the flange l5 engages theend of they handle l and holds the burner tip in a fixed position, the object being` to hold the tivo'holes l? and 18 out of the line with the ttvoholes 8 and 9.
fin the present instance the burner tip 13 is shown with tivo oi the mixed gas openings and With a center hole 2O which is aligned with the hole 2 when the burner is ready for use so that the oxygencan pass directly through the center hole without coming in contact with on inflammable ions until it leaves the burner tip.
ln operation Whenever the strikes bach ovvinp,` to the slowing up of the velocity at the end of the burner tip, it strikes against rection oi'c the gases in passing` 'from 'the holes 8 through the annular chamber' l0 to the holes 17 and 18 preventingthe llame from striking back any further than the chamber 10.
lt will also be observed that the holes S and 9 are sinaller in diameter than the holes l? and 1S', so that there is a change in pressure from the holes 8 and 9 to the chamber l0 as Well as a different change in pressure from there to the holes 17 and 18, whereby the tendency lot the gases to strike all the way bark into the hose, is interfered Wit-h beez ise ot the ditterence in pressure yoll the iu these three filiitterent spaces.
liVhaf We claini as follows, but various "fiodii'ieations ina-y be iiiade in the construct in shown in the drawings and abovepar- .i ieiv of' our invention:
.15in oxyeaeetvlene cutting torch, coinprisingr a nozzle holder having three p neivays extending therethrough, a frusto-conical iniXer seated in the endet' said nozzle holder and having; an .opening adapted to alien with one of the openings of the nozzle holder,l said trustoconical ineniber havingr two peripheral grooves withv which the ends of two kof the holes through the nozzle lill) holder` oonneet, and also lniving` zi `groove at one end to forni en annular olnnnber around the eentral opening, openings lending' iti-oni the peripheral opening' in the 'trnsto-ei'xnienl ineinher to the annuler groove in its face, und :i nozzle secured to the nozzle holder, having three holes therein, one of seid holes being` in alignment with the aligned holes of the mixer and the nozzle holder7 and the other two o'l' seid holes being substantially at 90 degrees to the gas supply holes leading i/ieofo'i ln testimonyY whereof We lntveherennto i set our lnnnls this lst day of June A. D. 1920.
