Description

Patented Dec. 19, 1922.
LULAH M. sMIDT, ontos zine-ran ecam-reams:
HALIR 'CURIJ'ERH Application filed-511131.36,
To all-107mm it may conccm Be it known that I, Lonni M. finne -pacitizen ofthe United States, and resident of the ci-tyoii Los-a ingeles, innthe Countyof Los Angeles and State of California have inyented new and useful Improvements in Hair Curlers, or". which the t'o'llowingds a full,- clear, and. accuratedisclosure.
This invention has to do with a deyice useful for curling or -waving hair, or the like,
audit isan object of the inventionj-to pnd vide ashuple', effective, improveddevice of this generalcharacter v I A. noteworthy i'eature: of the lnventionis the provision oi-a device on which hair can be easily. and quickly arranged in a manner topmduce a graceful effectivewave or curl.-
The device is such that hair can he arranged on it in ditlerent manners to obtain difierent waving or curling.
Another feature: of the device. isits ad'- instability. ability. in the device so that it can be used to handle hair in warious. manners and to himdle various qualitiesot'hair.
The various obiec sand features of the incuticn will be best and more iuiiy under.-
Fig. l is a yiew iiiustrin which a person can. handle or manipulate the device provided by the presentinWen an enlarged detail transverse sectional View.
of the device, being a View taken as indicated by line 6-6 on Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a View similar to Fig. 5 of another form in which the invention may be embodied, and Fig. 8 is a perspective viewof an embodiment of the invention similar to that shown in Figs. 1 to 6, showing another form ofconstruction.
The device illustrated in F igs. 1, 2, 8, 4, 5, and 6 ot' the drawings, comprises a main part or body 10. an end or outer cross arm 11 and an inner cross arm 12. In the case of the particular device illustrated inthe drawings the body lOis somewhat longer than either ot thearms and the arms are equal in length. The arms ll and 12 are preferably, though not necessarily, arranged The invention provides adjust- 1 i from the foliowing detailed description of typical.ancierred iorms oi theiinven-H tiou throughout which reference isihad t0 the .uccompauyiug draw to.betruly transverse of the :body- 10 and are; preferably, arranged. so that theyj' i extend eqi ialx-amounts on either sideo f 'the body 10,-" lhe ar n. llr is v arranged permanently atth 6 O end ofthe -body {10' being preferably integnal with the body ,10 T he innerar n .12 is,-=.; 1c}- vcordingrto the esent-invention, detachabl from. thebody: 1 0 and -'-adjustable longitudi nally ofthe bed 10. In theparticularform of the invention now under. considerationthe center portion 18; ot the inner -armF-l2; is somewhat cnlar formed through .1
-body 10. It is preferred, although not -nee-- essary, tha't-the variousrparts of the device,;
. that is, the;body 1-0 and-the arms ll and lQ,
be round in ac ross -sectionalfconfiguration as T such shapeis most" desirable for the av erage work. i Vl'ien -thelbodyi lfl is round incross sectional .configu'rationa-the openingie p13ovided inv the middle portion 13; of" the inner I arm is made round to accurately slid'ab-ly receive "it. The "body 10" preferably rfits tightly enough in the -openingiiletto prevent the inner arm 12 being moved by;gordinary handling of, the-device, yet loosely enfoughtoi I allow-it to be'inoved by'hand whenit is do sired to adj ust it 'rto wardens-positions; p
In operationtlre-rinner arml2 is arranged a t the- -\mostg advantageous 3 point along the ,5: body it) and in somegcases severalvinner: arms 1 inner arm or arms, as the case-may; be,'ha V81; been arranged' or properlyadj L sted on the ioody logliai-rllran'be wrapped, orwarranged around andgbe'tween tl'ie hody end-arms ring: various manners. In Figs 2, and ofthe-- 5 drawings illustrate a manner l11'\Vl1lCl1 hair a wave in it known as a marcel Wave. This is obviously only one of several manners in I which hair may be wrapped on the device and is intended only to illustrate a typical practical application of the device. Fig. 2 illustrates the manner in which the wrapping is started, Fig. 3' illustrates the Wrapping partially completed, and Fig. l illustrates the wrapping completed. It will be understood, of course, that the wrapping can be continued until all of the hair or the desired portion of the hair, is on the device.
In Fig. T of the drawings I show a form of the invention wherein there is a body 10 and a cross-arm 12. In this case the body and arm are the same length, are in tegral with each other, and are arranged ecl ;and.--.has ani-opening" 14; i
H-can be wrapped on the device to produce c transversely of each other,-to form across with arms of equal length. It will be 0bvious how hair can be arranged or wrapped on this formlof the inventlon in various ways and that this form of the invention is particularly useful inhandling compara-' tively short hair. I.
In Fig. 8 of the drawings is illustrated a form of the invention similar to that illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,'and 6., The
form of the inventionshown in Fig. 8, however, differs from that shown in the other figures in that the inner arm 12 is not slidably. adjustable on the body 1O but is adapted to, be adjusted longitudinally relative to the body 10" by being arranged throughdifferent openings formed'tran'sversely through the body 10 'to slidably re' ceive it. There is a series of openings 20 formed-in the body '10 so that the arm 12 can be arranged at various points along it.
The outer arm 11 is preferably integral and solid with thebody 1O like the arm 11 in the form of the invention first described. In
the form of theiriventiori shown in Fig. 8, like in the other forms-herein set forth, the
various'parts are preferably round in cross sectional configuration, and the arm12 rubber, or the like, and when it isto beheated that it be formed" of-a comparatively" preferably fits the open-ings'20 so that it can be moved byhand but will not become displaced by ordinary handling or maniplation of the device.
As far as the present invention is concerned it is more or'less immaterialv what material is used in the formation of the device. heatedit'is preferred that it beformed of light'metalor alloy ofmetals'which will not melt-at temperatures to which the device is apt to be heated. y
Having described only typical embodiments of my invention, Ido not wish to limit myself to the particular features hereinabove set forth but wish to reserve to my However, when the device is not to be self any changes or variations that may appear to those skilled in the art and that may fall Within the scope of the following claims.
Having described a preferred form of my invention, I claim: I l. A device of the character described comprising, a body, a cross arm in connection with the body, the arm being detachable from the body and adjustable longitudinally of the'body,
2. A" device of the character described comprising,'a' body, an arm at one end of the body, extending from two sides of the body at the same point longitudinally on the body and an arm intermediate the ends of the body extending from two sides of the body at thesame'point longitudinally on the body.
3. A device of the character described comprising, a body, an outer arm at one end of the body, and inner arm intermediate the endsof the body and adjustable longitudinally of the body.
4. A device of the character described comprising, a body, an outer cross arm fixed at one end of the'body,-and an inner cross arm intermediate the ends of the body and arranged in connection with the body to be adjustable longitudinally of it. a
5. A device of the character described comprising, two parts, one a body the other sides of the body at the same point longi- "tudi-nally of the body. p In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereuntosubscribed my name this 23 day of June, 1921.
