To all whom t may concern- Be it known that l, WILLIAM F. MARTIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at llToi-inleysburg, in the county. of Dauphin and .State of Pennsylvania, have inventedv certain new and usefullmprovements in the like and has reference more `particularly v-to machines of thev character. employing a plurality of pockets beneath a screen for receiving waste material passing through said screen.
The object of the present invention is to .provide `an improved. arrangement kot `valves for controlling discharge ot the waste material from the collecting pockets.
ln carrying out the above end, a further aim is to provide novel means whereby the valves may be repeatedly opened and closed by power-operated means, preferably'driven by a water wheel. y

In both instances, gap 5 is lett between the lower edges oit the side walls through which the contents of' the pockets are adapted 'to discharge. For controlling these gaps or outlets, l employ a plurality 'olf slidin valve plates 6 which may be supported in 'any preferred manner, for instanceby angle iron tracks 7 secured to the sides of the frame. 1.
`The several valve plates 6 are secured to alongitudinal connecting rod S which may be moved either by hand or by power to co-nf trol the valves. l prefer howevervk to connect the rod 8 with a depending crank arm 9 yon a transverse rock shaft 10 by means of a link or the like 11, said rock shaft being appropriately mounted at onev end of the frame and having a crank arm 12 adapted to be operated by power. ln the present showing', a-pitman rod 13 is connected adjustabtly .or otherwise with the arm 12 and it desired the length of said pitman; rod may ybe adjustable, for instance by means of' a turn-buckle lll. ln the present showing, the
rod 13 has suitable connection with an ec-y centric 15 on the sha'lft 16 of a water wheel 17, the latter being located beneath the discharge spout 18 onto .which water troni the inclined bottom 19 of the frame 1, is discharged. rlhe shaft 16 may be suitably supported and l have shownl U-shaped hangers 20 for this purpose. f
By the construction described, it will be seen that rotation oi' the water wheel 17 will cause stroking of the pitinan 13, thereby oscillating the shaft 10 and producing a reciprocating motion of the connecting rod 8, the result being that the valves 6 are alternately opened and closed and it will be seen that whenever said valves open, the waste material which has accumulated in the pockets 3 will be discharged therefrom. The valves .may be arranged on the connecting rod 8 so as toopeii and close in' unison, Aas will be clear from Figs. il and 4l, or the-arrangementinay be such that the valves will open sucessively and close in reverse order, (see Fig). In all 'forms ofk construction, the machine is simple yet eicientand reliable and hence I prefer to employ the details shown. lt is to be understood however that within the scope oit the invention as claimed.,
