Application filed September 22, 1921 Serial No. 502,447.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosnPi-I S. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greenwood, in the county of Sebastian and State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Track Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to track devices and more particularly to a novel and improved switching device adapted for use in that type of track known as industrial railways, and more especially with the tracks employed in mines.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a device that may be placed between the switch point and the inside of the main line rail to positively guide the wheels of the car onto the switch and prevent the possibility of derailment caused by a bent or sprung switch point.
A further object of the invention is to provide a metal switching device placed be tween the inside of the main linetrack and the switch point of the side track to positively guide the car wheels onto the switch and to prevent the switch point from being forced out of position.
A third object of the invention is to provide a track device that is adapted for use with either a right hand or left hand switch.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed. I
In the accompanying drawings like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure l is a plan view of a portion of the track and switch showing my device applied thereto.
Figure 2 is a switching device.
Referring now to the drawings A designates the main track consisting of rails 5 and 6, the side track is designated by B which leads to the main track and 7 and 8 perspective view of the indicate the switch points operating in the the heavy service andpoor road bed to which this type of track is subjected and that frequent derailment of the cars is caused by the flange of the wheels following between the main track and the switch point when set to take the siding.
vTo overcome this condition I have prol vided a novel and improved device which is designated as a whole by 9, consisting of a rectangular section 10, a wedge shaped end portion 11 terminating at one end in a sharp edge 12 and having a shoulder, or abutment 13 at the other end, the upper and lower surfacesof the device being parallel In practice, the straight side of the device is placed against the inner face .of' the main track in such a position that the switch point lies back of and against the face or shoulder 13 and the point 12 of the triangular section lies close against the main line track in such a position that the flange of the wheel will ride out and upon the triangular section and thereby be guided upon the switch point without danger of derailment.
parallel I am enabled to use this device equally as well fora right or left hand By having the upper and lower faces switch by turning the switching device over,
bringing the point12 from left toright, or right to left.
There has thus been provided a simple and eilicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified. It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the in Having thus described the invention what i is claimed as new, is
A device of the kind described conslstlng of a single member rectangular in cross sec- 1 tion and having upper and lower faces of identical shape and parallel throughout, one end of saidmember being tapered laterally to form a sharp wedge with its edge at one extremity of the member and its butt about centrally thereof, the other end of said member being oflesswidth than the butt of the wedge and of uniform width throughout, one side of the last mentioned end lying in the plane of one side of the wedge, said. In testimony whereof I affix my signature member being adapted for use with either in presence of two Witnesses. face HPPGIHIOSt and Vitll the Wedge pointing in either direction whereby said member 5 may be positioned between eithere' right or Witnesses:
left hand switch point and. e main line rail 7 DAN C. MCDONALD, on either side of a track. C. B. RYAN.
