Application filed .ful 15,
Be it known that I, Amos EmoKs'oN, a-
citizn or the United States, residing at Keota, in the county of Weld and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Calf VVeaners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to calf weaners and has for its object to provide a device of this character which can be easily and quickly applied to the nose of the calf and cannot be removed by the calf.
It is another object of the invention to provide a weaner of this character wherein only one movable part is provided, and this part may be readily swung into engagement with the nose of the animal and securely fastened in position.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide a device of this character wherein the movable part is pivoted to the body portion of thedevice and is not longitudinally movable so that there is no danger of injuring the nose of the animal.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the improved construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more particularly described, fully claimed and. illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a view in elevation of a calf weaner constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the invention, a portion of the device being shown in section;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the weaner in its open position; and
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the weaner in its closed position.
Referring to the drawings, 5 designates the body member constructed preferably of wood so as to render the device comfortable in winter, and at the same time permitting the device to be constructed relatively large and light in weight.
The body member 5 has its end portion 6 enlarged, while projecting from the inner face of the end portion 6 is a finger 7, said finger being rounded and serving as one portion of the supporting means of the weaner. The inner face-8 of the enlargement is curved as well as the central portion 9 of the body member to conform to the curvatureof the nose of the animal and to permit the device to be readily appliedv The opposite end portion 10 of the body we. serial Nb. sv'a.
the block including a fiiigei eateries 1% which is similar in construction to the finger ma n r is provided with elative extension 11 onwhich blo'lf 12 11 diPii'lfid;
7. The inner face 14 of the block is curved similar to the face 8 of the enlargement or extension of the end portion 6, so as to conform to the curvature of the nose of the animal.
A bolt 15 is passed through the end portion 10, the extension 11 and the block 12, said bolt pivotally connecting the block 12 to the body member 5. By this means the block may swing upon the extensionll toward and away from the finger 7, yet the finger 13 is always maintained in, spaced relation to the finger 7 as longitudinal movement of the block 12 on the body member is prevented. The end portion 10 of the body member is provided with an opening 16 adapted to register with an opening 17 provided in the block 12. Aset screw 18 is threaded in said opening, said set screw being adapted to enter the opening 17 of the block 12 so as to prevent movement of the block relative to the body member and also to hold the finger 13 in alignment with the finger 7 To reinforce the end portion 6 of the body member a bolt 19 is passed through said enlarged portion inwardly of the finger 7.
To apply the device the set screw 18 is operated so as to release the block and permit swinging movement of the block on the body member 5. The block is swung sub stantially at right angles tothe finger 7, permitting said finger to be readily inserted in one portion of the nose of the calf. The block is then swung back, permitting the finger 13 to enter the opposite side portion of the nose of the calf. The set screw. 18 is rotated so as to lock the finger 13 of the block 12 in alignment with the finger 7. This permits movement of the weaner in the nose of the animal, but positively prevents the same from bfeing wrenched from the nose of the animal by the animal.
From the foregoing it will be readily seen that this invention provides a novel form of calf weaner capable of being readily applied to the nose of any calf and maintained in position indefinitely. In addition to this the device includes only one movable part, namely, the block 12. 11 view of the injury to the nose of the animal is ima block pivoted to the opposite end of the possible. All of these features are possessed body member for rotary movement, said by a device that can be manufactured in block having a finger projecting therefrom, large numbers from a small quantity of and means carried by the body member for 15 5 material. engagement with the block to prevent rota- What is claimed is tion of the block and to hold the finger of A calf Weaner comprising a body member the block substantially in alignment With having one end thereof enlarged, a finger the finger of the enlarged end portion. projecting from the outer edge of said en- In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 20 10 larged end portion back upon the body memsignature.
