Original application led December 6,1920; sei-iai No; 428.691. "Divided andk this application inea sep- )temeer s, 1921. serial no. 499,158. 1 f
Be it lrnown that L CLAUDE Postr, a citizen offthe United States,v residing at Chicago, in the kcounty of Cook and State' of lllinois have invented certainnew afnd usef ul improvements in Printing- Flate-Glamping Means, of whiohthe following is a descrip tion. n y.
plate clamping ineans, and niore `particularly to Vmeans adapted y'to removablyy position a printing plate upona type roller the lil-re, and is aidivisional"application of Serial No. 428,691; filed December G, 1920, for an envelope handling device. One .of the objects of'fniy invent-ion is "to, provide a plate clamping inea-ns which-per- -inits ofthe platebeing adjusted longitudinally and eireumferentially of the -rollfthe entire plate Aclamping -device 'beingv removable from` the roll, for'the purpose of clean-- ing,` adjustingrenewing,L etc. i L
`Many other objects' and advantages of the Construction herein shown and v,described will be obvious to those skilled inthe art from the disclosures herein gir/en y v. y To this end niy invention consists -in the novely Construction,V arrangement andy coni- `bination of parts* herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims. .p
In the drawings, wherein likeaeference characters-indicate vlike lory Corresponding parts,v n j ggl is a plan viewy ofthe printing roll 'showing a type plate heldin ,place Athereon;
' Fig. 2 Visla detaily olf the platen roll'and type carryingrolly v .Fig 3 is a sectionlfta'lrejn"substantially'ony Fig. 4 is a section taken substantiallyv on the line 4.-l ofFig. l; L
Fig. 5 vis a viewjsiniilarto that shown in Fig. Vl, showing "dilfermitr size printing plate .in .positionk;v w n y .v y I n Fig. 6 is a'seetionv taken substantially lon the linee-6 of Fig. '5, and Fig. 7 .is a section taken'substantia-lly on the 'linefof Figi. f
ln the drawings,`whereinfl have illus- 'A trated apreferred'ernbodinient of my invenu "tion, there is shown `a feed or Vimpression 1-011 l, @wperetieszvth e tyre 01' 'printing `1"@11 2, the feed N11/limes e, tympan 31T@- inovably secured thereon, Vand falsohaving a f manner.'
y y thereon in any suitable manner. My invention relatesto improvements in "lbersQ, "also wedge-shapedfin cross section so feeding arc l adapted tocooperate with a feeding arc`5 securedk on the' type roll as shown in"Figs. 2 kand 3, the-'envelopes or other niatterrto 'be printed being delivered between the rolls l and 2 in any suitable Auxiliaryr feedingy rings 17 en circle the roll 2 and are removably secured The type roll 2` intended -to receive printing plate 6to be used in the printing' Aoperati-'on'of the'sh-eetsfed through the rolls, the printing plate preferably being curved cross section to seat on the roll l2 and being beveled at its edges as at 7.
"Extending longitudinally ofthe type roll 2' are one `er inore circumferentially spaced KVgrooves or slots 8,'said grooves being preferably wedge-sha'oed or dovetailed in lradial cross section. Type holding clamping ineinas to'b'e `slidablefin the dovetailed slots 8, are positioned in theslots and are movable ravdiallytherein so as tobecoine wedged in place when rnoved outwardly. The n1ein-` bers 9 are bored and threaded at 10, 10, longitudinally yof said slots, the threadingl on vthe right and lefthand rneinbers of the'pair of clamps being reverse, that is, oneuof the nier'nbers 9 has a rightha-nd thread il() ltherethrough and the other has ay lefthand thread' l0-.v Ther portions lthe olainps projecting routwardly of -the grooves are each recessed or shouldered as 11, the shoulders over hanging the bottomof the recesses and being bev'eledf :to cooperatingly engage with rvthe fbevelsorchanifersl on the edges ofthe plate.
Extending longitudinally A. within "the dovetalled slot-8'-and insertable thereinto vfront one end ofthe roll v is ,a threaded :bar "l2, having a knobor *gripping* portion 13 preferably detachably secured at itsouter fend, whereby the bar may be inanuallyadjusted, Athe'body ofthe `bar beingy divided finto -two oppositely threaded portions 14- threaded 'bar i12fwilln1nove clamping eleinents 9 in unison .toward one another' so as kto -felain or release "the type for printing plate held therbetnveen.k `iti-sito be fur-ther f noted that inasmuch as both the clamps and the printing plate have cooperating beveled edges, the clamping movement will move or slide the plate downwardly of the clamps, due to the cooperating tapers and forcethe plate downwardly on the typeroll and will also torce the clamps radially outwardly of the dovetailed slots,` thereby wedging the clamps in place in the slots and firmly ing their position longitudinally as well as radially of the type roll. By this method it is not necessary that both ends oit the operat- `ing rod l2 bejournaled in the slot, because when the rod is tree to move radially of the slot, as has been previously described, the
Vtype will be clamped in position on the roll and held against radial andulong'itudina movement thereon. j
The centering of the printing plate is automatic to accommodate dierent length plates, as shown in Figs. t and 5, in which theI plate Gis longer kthan 6, but the centering may be adjustably varied by the rotation of the clamping elements individually on the bar after the bar and clamps have n been removed entirely rtree of the slots,
`whereupon after such adjustment the asseinbly bar and clamping plates may be reinserted into the slots. n y H aving thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modiications may be made inthe same without de` parting` from the spirit of my invention;
hence I kdo not wish to be understoodas s ,a printing plate therebetween.
