One important object of the invention is to provide an improved form of jar top which may be economically'manufactured and which may be applied to a jar without the use of special machinery.

A second important obj ect' of the invention is to provide a novel and improved form of such jar top or closure which will have improved means for holding the closure securely on a jar.

A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved closure having novel means for retaining a packing washer in proper position for application to a jar.

With the above and other objects in view, the inventlon consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed."

Figure 5 isa detail section through the edge of'the device before the bead is formed. Figure 6 is a modified form of the closure. In both forms of the device there is provided a body portion 10 having a downwardly pressed center 11 concentric with and in spaced relation to its periphery. This downwardly pressed center 11 forms on the under side of the top orclosure an annular flange 12. Depending inclinedly from the periphery of the body portion of the closure is a flange 13 having at its lower edge in the form shown in Figures 1 and 3 an inwardly projecting beaded lip 14 arranged to engage beneath the lip 15 of a jar 16.

In applying this closure the jars are filled cold and the contents heated. Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
